It May he justly termed a popular school of Art and Industry teaching by object lessons of the most vivid and attractive description. Its immense popularity is partly due to the Central location of Cincinnati but mainly to the Liberal character of its management which is in the hands of the three commercial associations of the City. Day no scr Day j. Have been in search of employment i Timve Culloty at fifty places Only to receive i he sumo answer just then Little Jimmy who had been asleep woke up. To pleaded won t you give me a piece of Kretul i am so hungry 1 there is no bread Jimmy said the Mother with an aching heart. When will hero be asked the child pile Wibly. Tears Carno to the Mother s eyes. Hho knew not what to say. Jimmy i la bring you some snid i lie father hoarsely and he seized his hat and went to the door. His wife already Laid her hand upon his sleeve. She saw the look in his and she feared to what step desperation might Lead him. Remember she said solemnly it is hard to starve but there Are things that Are worse he Shook off her hand but not roughly and without saying a word passed out. Out in the cold streets they would be his Only Home next he thought. For a Brief time longer he had the shelter of a cheerless room in a cold tenement House but the rent would become due at the end of the month and he had nothing to meet it. Robert Brice was a Mechanic competent and skillful. Three years since he lived in a country where his expenses were moderate and he bund no difficulty in meeting them. But in an evil hour he grew tired of his Village Home and he removed to the City. Here be vainly hoped to do better. For a while to met with very Good Success. But he found his tenement House in which he was obliged to live a poor substitute for the neat Little collage which he Hud occupied in the country. Tie saw his mistake but was too proud to go Back. Of course 1 can t have As Good accommodations hero As in the to said but it is something to live in and to in to midst of things i d rather be Back said his wife. Somehow the City Doson t seem like Home. There i used to run in and take Lea with a neighbor and Ivo a pleasant social Lime. Here i know scarcely anybody you la get used to it after a snid her husband. Sin did not think so but Slit did not like to complain. But a Lime of great depression came and with in a suspension of business enterprises. Work Censed Lor Robert Brice Ami Many others. If to had been in his old Home lie could Timve turned his hands to something else and at the worst could have borrowed of his neighbors Unell bettor times. But the Friendly relations arising from neighbourhoods do not exist in Iho City to the same extent As in the country so Clay by Day to saw his scanty sum of Money Wasto away Ami no one extended a hand. Day by Day he went out to seek work Only to find himself one of the Largo number All of whom wore doomed to disappointment. It to had been alone he would have got along somehow but it was a sore trial to come to a cheerless room and Pale wife Anil hungry children with no Relief to offer Ihm. When on that christinas eve Robert Brice went into the streets he hardly knew How lie was going to redeem the Promise he had made to Little Jimmy. was absolutely penniless and had been so for three Days. There was nothing that Lio was Likely to find to do that night. I will Pawn my to snid at last. I cannot see my wife and children starve it was a Well worn overcoat and that cold Winter night to needed something More to keep him warm. Weakened by enforced fasting he was More sensitive to to cold and shivered Asho walked along the pavement. He said. coat must go. 1 know not How i shall got along without i1, but i can t Sec the children starve before my eyes lie was not in general an envious Man but when he saw Slock Well led citizens buttoned up to the Throat in warm overcoats Como out of the brilliantly lighted shops provided with presents for Happy children at Home while his was starving he suffered some Hitler thoughts upon the inequality of Fortune s in ifs to come to his mind. Why should icy to so Hnnry and to so miserable there was a time he remembered it Well when to too suffered not the Christmas eve to pass without buying some Little gifts for Jimmy and Agues. How Little to dreamed they would Ever want Broad. There was one Man Shorter than himself warmly Clad who passed him Wilh Bis hands thrust into the pockets of his overcoat. There was a pleasant smile upon his face lie was doubtless thinking of Hie Little Circle at Homo. Robert know him As a Rich merchant whose ample warehouse to had often passed. He had applied to this Man Only two Days before for employment and had Boon refused. 11 was perhaps the thought of the wide difference Between them so far As outward circumstances wont that led Robert Brice to follow him. After a while the merchant or. Grimes Drew his handkerchief from his pocket. As he did so he did not perceive that his pocket Book Carno with it and fell to the Side walk. He did not perceive it but Robert did. His heart leaped into his Mouth and a sudden thought entered his mind. He Bent quickly Down and picked up the pocket Book. Lie raised his eyes hastily to Sec if the movement was noticed. It was not. The merchant wont on a needing his loss. This will buy bread for my wife and children a vision of Tho Comfort which this Money would bring to that cheerless room lighted up his heart Lor an instant but then for he was not dishonest there came another thought. The Money was not Hia much As he wanted it. Brit i cannot see my wife and children be thought again. If it is wrong to keep the Money god will Pardon the offence. To will understand my motive All this was sophistry and he knew it. In a moment he Felt it to be so. There were some things worse than starvation. It was his wife that had said that just before he came out. Could he meet her gaze when to returned with food so obtained t pc lived honest so to thought i won t turn thief now it was with an Effort Lio come to Titis decision for All the while before his eyes there was that vision of a cheerless Homo and to could hear Jimmy vainly asking for food. It was Wilh an Effort that he stepped Forward and placed his hand on Tho merchant s shoulder and extended the hand that held Tho pocket Book. Be said hoarsely you have dropped your pocket Book thank said the merchant turning around 1 had t perceived my loss you dropped it when you took out your handkerchief. And you picked it up i am very much obliged to Yon you have a reason to said Robert in a Low voice. I co to very near keeping it that would have been said or. Grimes his tone altering slightly. Yes it would but it s hard on a Man to to honest when to is penniless and his wife and children without a crust surely you and your family arc not in that said the merchant earnestly. Replied Robert it is Only Loo True and you Are out of for iwo months i have vainly sought for work. I applied to Yon two Days since i remember you now. I in ought i Hail seen your face before. You still want 1 should feel grateful or it a Porter left me yesterday. Will you take his place at twelve dollars a thankfully sir i would work for half that then come to Norrow morning or rather As to Morrow is a Holiday the Day succeeding. Meantime take this for your present necessities to Drew from his pocket Book a Bank note and put it in Robert s hand. It s fifty said Robert amazed. 1 know it. The pocket Book contains one thousand dollars. But for you i should have lost the whole. I wish 5 of a merry Christmas it will indeed be a merry said. Robert with emotion. God bless you sir. Good Good Jano waited for her husband in the cold and cheerless room which Lor a few Days longer Sho might Call her Home. Do you think father will bring me some asked Little Jimmy is he nestled in her Lap. I Hope so she said but her heart mis gave her. She feared in was a delusive Hope. An hour passed there was a step on to Stair her husband s. It could not to for this was a cheerful Clastic Stop coming up iwo Steps at u time. She looked eagerly at Tho door. Yes it was to. The door opened. Robert Radiant with entered with a Basket Ful of substantial provisions. Have you got some bread Jimmy hopefully. Yes. Jimmy some bread and meat from a restaurant and Here s a Little Tea and sugar. There s n lilt a Wood led yet Jane. Let s have a comfortable meal for please god tins shall to a merry Christmas eve did it happen Tell me so Robert told his wife and soon n Bright lire lighted up the before cheerless room and there were four Happy hearts that waited in Joyful Hope for inc Dawn of a merry Christmas Day the next week they moved to a better Homo. They have never since known what it is to want. Robert found a firm Friend in the merchant and has an account in to savings Bank and has reason to remember with a Gratful heart god s goodness on hat Christmas eve. A Sciort to make yourself thoroughly miserable begin by fancying that no one cares for you that Yon Are not of use to anybody a sort of nonentity in the household where your place would not be missed but could be very easily supplied. Reflect on your want of Beauty and Lead yourself to believe that no one can love a Plain Faco or think you agreeable because there Are others More charming. Fancy that every Ono who looks upon you makes a mental comparison which mitigates against Yon in favor of some one else. Imagine that every word said in jest is Only meant to cover a deeper and More painful meaning that every article of wearing apparel you Don a criticised and ridiculed. Do All this and your tendency to morbid Ness of feeling will so increase that in a Short time you will become one of the most miserable of human beings. Tie Man. On Friday or. J. B. Clark of Tipton county Camo to his City and engaged rooms for himself and Latu in the afternoon he arrived there with u Heui Tiff Young lady from Tipton county who is visiting her brother ill Law in this City. Or. Hastings who is the polite proprietor of lilo Central asked or. Clark if that were his wife and Tho latter showed him ills License to marry slating that Lio wanted the in Tual ceremony to take place at once. Justice Miller was immediately sent for and upon arriving commenced looking As serious in a Stone Fence. But he did not marry Trio couple Lucause the Young lady wanted him to return the marring License As soon is the ceremony was performed. She did not want the Mamago made Public but wished to conceal it. Or. Clark with heroic Energy then repaired to Justice Hall who complied with Tho wish of the lady and married them. The couple then went Back to the hotel and the License was left in charge of the handsome Youn clerk who comes on watch at 4 o clock in the morning. The Young bridegroom drove his wife toilet brother in Law s residence in this City and leaving her there returned to the hotel where Lio slept by himself during the night. Yesterday to went about town As if he had never been married and Dino with his wife s brother who knew nothing of the marriage. Later in the afternoon it was reported that Tho brother and two Kinsmen were said to be on the Lookout for or. Clark toward whom Lime entertained to pleasant feelings upon learning that lie had secretly married the Young lady who is a member of one of the wealthiest and most esteemed families in Tipton co. Or Clark however is not a scary Man and was seen at the Central hotel very late yesterday evening. It was reported that the Young wife had filed a petition for divorce in one of our courts but this Story cannot be Well conjectured much less explained to give the above facts As we have been in formed suppressing the name of the Young lady at the instance of acquaintances and through Courtesy due the feelings of her relatives whom to understand Are very much grieved at tie result of Ettl ashment for or dark. The Young lady has been engaged two yours to a Young Man Well known in Memphis but now a reside no of Arkansas. Her Mother opposed his suit now her daughter has married or. . Memphis Appeal. A dinner excuse. Apologies for poor dinners Are generally out of place. But when a lady Bias a forgetful husband who without warning brings Home a dozen guests to sit Down to a Plain fam by dinner for three or four it is not a human nature to keep silence. What to say and How to say it from the problem mrs. Tucker the wife of judge Tucker of Willian Isburg solved this problem Many years ago. She was the daughter or Niece i am Uncertain which of sir Peyton Skipwith and celebrated for her Beauty wit Case and Grace of manner. Her temper and tact wore put to proof one court Day when the judge brought with him the accustomed half score or More of lawyers for whom not the slightest preparation had been made the judge having quite forgotten to remind his Wile that it was court Day and ii he herself strange to Tell having overlooked the tact. The dinner was served with elegance and mrs. Tucker made herself very charming. Upon rising to leave the guests to their wine she said gentlemen you have dined to Day with judge Tucker Promise me now that Yon will Dine to Morrow with a. Tills was All her apology whereupon Tho gentlemen said that such a wife was beyond Price. The judge then explained the situation and the next Day there was a Noble banquet. Moral. Never worry a guest with apologies. It will be said that Tabasco soothes and cheers Iho weary toilet and Bola us the overworked brain. Such May be its momentary effects but the sequel cannot be ignored. All suck expedients Are fallacious. When a certain amount of brain work or hand work has been performed nature must have space in which to recuperate. All devices for escaping from this necessity will fail. It is bad policy to set the House on fire to warm our hands by Tho let it then be clearly understood that Tho temporary excitement produced by tobacco is gained by the destruction of vital Force and that it contains absolutely nothing which can be of use to the tissues of the body. Tobacco adds 110 potential strength to the human Frame. It May Spur a weary brain or feeble Arm to undue exertion for a Short time but its work is destructive not constructive. It cannot add one molecule to the plasm out of which our bodies Are daily built up. On the contrary it exerts upon it a most Dull curious influence it does not Supply but diminishes vital Force it has been denied that tobacco loads to organic disease but Tho evidence is very Strong the other Way and it would to very remarkable if continual functional derangement did not ultimately Lead to chronic derangement of Tho organs. That it bonuses functional disturbance no one dreams of denying indeed it has been remarked that no habitual smoker can Bis truly said to have a Day s perfect health. Right Way to talk.
