El Paso Prospector (Newspaper) - August 2, 1979, El Paso, Texas New by Molly Fennell major staff writer seven new chairpersons representing departments in four colleges have been approved by University president Arleigh b. Templeton effective sept. 1. These changes will take place in the mass communication philosophy modern language mathematics civil engineering electrical engineering and economics departments. In the Liberal arts College Wilma Wirt assistant professor will replace Francisco j. Lewels As chairman of mass communication department. Joan Bornscheuer will replace Ralph Ewton As acting chairman in the modern languages department and Peter Robinson will be chairman of the philosophy department with the resignation of William Springer. In the College of science Eugene schuster mathematics professor will replace John Narvarte As chairman of the mathematics department. The engineering school will see two changes. Andrew Jones former civil engineering department chairman from California state pol technical University has replaced interim chairman Paul Hassler in the Utel paso civil engineering department. Darrell Schroder replaces Michael Austin As chairman of the electrical engineering department. A in the College of business Robert Tollen became acting chairman of the economics and finance department when former chairman Timothy Roth accepted a governmental Post in Washington . Lewels reportedly is being relieved of his duties upon recommendation of Liberal arts Dean Ray Small and Tomas Rivera former acting vice president for academic affairs. The chairman however declined comment on his replacement pending a mid August meeting with the faculty members from the department. Robinson a i done to deny that the presidents office initiated the move a he says a but i wont comment on it until in be had a Chance to discuss it with the entire Lewels an outspoken critic of the administration also refused to comment on the connection Between his removal and last years conflicts with the administration. Lewels accused the administration with being concerned Only with credit hour production not academic Quality. The associate professor will continue As a teacher in the department teaching four courses including one new course on minorities in the Media. Wirt who replaces Lewels says the position offers her a Challenge but that she prefers to be in the classroom working with both students and professionals. A i accepted the position a she says a because i wanted to keep the department from continuing to be a political Wirt commented that in the past departmental Power had been a thrown Back and Forth Between the administration and the department. Robinson says he views his new position As philosophy department chairman As a routine Job rather than a two former students arrested five University buildings burglarized two former University students accused of burglar izing five Campus buildings were arrested july 28 a within minutes after apparently setting off an intrusion alarm in the administration building Ralph Coulter chief of the University police said. University police reportedly were investigating burglaries in the Union Post office and recreation room when they received a report that an alarm had been triggered at the business office located in the administration building. Roger Evan Garrett 21, of 4740 n. Mesa st., Apt. 132, and Robert Lee Parker 24, no address Given were apprehended inside the building and later charged with burglary of an office. Both were later released from the Elpaso county jail on personal recognizance Bonds. In addition to the Union and administration building break ins Coulter said Garrett who attended the University this past Spring semester and Parker last enrolled in the summer 1976 term May be charged with burglaries in Magoffin auditorium and the education and geology buildings. A a we re going on the Assumption that the incidents Are related a Coulter said adding that police have evidence linking the pair to what he says is a the most burglaries in any one Day Coulter said two additional officers were called in to help in the investigation. Another officer who had come on shift at 6 a.m., stayed until 11 . Helping compile reports for the District attorneys office the chief said. Calling the burglaries a a fishing expedition a Coulter said Only a few items were reported stolen. A sewing machine was taken from the music departments costume room in Magoffin auditorium Coulter said As Well As some Money and cigarettes which were stolen from vending machines located in the education building. A pocket calculator and a Small sum of Money also were reported missing from the geology building. Apparently nothing was taken from the administration building or the Union Coulter said adding that vending machine Coin boxes in the recreation room had been emptied the Day before. Committee submits candidates to fill vice president position a list of eight candidates has been submitted by an advisory committee to University president Arleigh b. Templeton for his final selection of a vice president for academic affairs. Among the top recommendations for the position is Rudolph Gomez who was named acting vice president july 3. The position was vacated last january by Kenneth Beasley who resigned after a committee assigned to investigate alleged academic deterioration found a Lack of Confidence in the vice president in five University colleges. Beasley has returned to full time teaching in the political science department. In his selection of a new vice president Templeton says he needs a someone who can manage an academic program. Someone who is an academician with rather distinguished but he added a a in a not in any hurry to make a final selection. Out of 103 applicants a 15-member search committee gradually narrowed the number Down to its top 10 choices and conducted Campus interviews with each which also included meetings and interviews with academic Deans chairpersons faculty administrators and administrative personnel. One interviewer Ray Small Dean of the College of Liberal arts noted that his opinions were a a varied on each of the candidates. He is certainly not a weak candidate. But whoever is vice president some faculty members Are while Philip Gallagher associate professor of English and Active faculty Senate member met with Only two candidates Gomez and Milton Grodsky of the University of Maryland a he said he found the latter candidate to be a a very Strong aggressive and intelligent person for the position. Stressing the need for selection of an outsider Gallagher said he would be a a disappointed if Gomez is selected.
