El Paso Herald Post (Newspaper) - October 27, 1964, El Paso, TexasSection b tuesday october 27, 1964 Page by Elpaso Herald Post editorials sports comics markets classified president can swing Bale of Hay meanwhile Back at lbs ranch there s Barbecue Landing the strip would be open to me. By Loretta Overton second of two articles when the invitation to attend a Barbecue at 2 30 . Sunday at the lbs ranch in Stonewall Texas arrived my first reaction was one of amazement. What fun then the questions came. Where is the ranch How do i get there what should i Wear How Many people were going to be there who would they be since i am taking flying lessons and knew there was a Landing strip right on the ranch i decided to Check and see if there was any reason Why i Fly Down and land there. I reserved a Piper Cherokee from Southwest air rangers and began to make plans. Since it was to be my first Cross country flight instructor Joe Burek agreed to accompany me to help me Chart my course and make certain i did no to get lost. After a Telephone Call to the ranch i was assured that if i would radio my identity As an invited guest to Security people when i approached the Airport end produce credentials upon i was All set to go a almost As excited about flying Down As i was about the invitation to visit the ranch. But the weather Man had other plans. Sunday i was awakened at 6 . By Thunder. My heart Sank As i looked out of the window. Elpaso had 1010 Days of Sunshine a but on the one Day i particularly wanted to Fly the weather kicked up. Distressed i called the . Weather Bureau even before putting i Coffee. It did no to look Good. Turbulence and scattered thundershowers blocked my Way. Maybe i could Fly around them but if not id have to turn around and come Back. I called Joe. He advised that i make airline reservations in Case the poor flying conditions persisted. I did. They did. Flying Down on a 707 Jet i looked at the boiling Thunder Heads beneath me that created enough turbulence to shake even that a King of the air and was glad i had decided not to risk the trip in a Light plane. A Friend in Elpaso who was familiar with the location of the lbs ranch had drawn me a map of a Short Cut for getting there from san Antonio one of the nearest airline connections. I started out in a rented car. From san Antonio i drove on route 281 to Blanco turned left on farm Road 1623 at the Blinker in Blanco. About 20 Miles from Blanco the farm Road intersects route 290. There i turned right then drove about three quarters of a mile before turning left again on the first country Road in that direction. That Road led me directly to the Road that runs by the main Gate of the ranch. The White Frame House can be seen from the Road and sightseers lined the Fence. Security officers checked my credentials referred me to another Entrance where i was once again checked then allowed to enter. Inside the Gate i drove Down a dirt Road toward the Meadow in front of the House where great live Oak Trees arched Over Grassy Banks of the per Dena les River. The farmhouse stood Serene and inviting in the Early afternoon Sun. During the Day i met and talked with lady Bird Johnson Cabinet wives mrs. Robert Mcnamara mrs. Orville Freeman mrs. Willard Wirtz . Janet Travell Liz Carpenter mrs. Johnson a press Secretary and fellow reporters. When the Barbecue was served we grinned Over heaping plates at each other Greasy faced munching on spareribs. Yep even the first lady eats them with her fingers. I also had a Chance to question and observe some of the employees a Dale Malechek ranch Foreman household helpers Mary Davis Gertrude Jackson and James Davis and a few other Blue leaned booted Tanch hands whose names i did not learn. Putting All of the pieces of All the conversations together i came Back to Elpaso with vivid impressions of Lyndon Baines Johnson his family and the workers on whom he depends. Employees think he is a Gratifying Man for whom to work because he expects top performance without Compromise. The president himself has worked and sweated his Way up from a a have not to a he knows that it can be done. So he expects the very Best from those associated with him. Sometimes like athletes Muscles and minds must cramp and Strain under hard work but the result makes a Man proud. They know that tie first View visitor gets of Johnson ranch. Ranch is a tap Root for him from which he can reach Down for the deep resources and renewal. Microphones have a tendency to distort her West Texas accent but off Mike her voice is soft and melodic.
