Achievement of accreditation in d i c a t e s that Edinboro a undergraduate nursing program has Clear and appropriate educational goals and the Means for fulfilling them in accordance with standards adopted by the National group of nursing educators. The accreditation took effect March 6 and applies retroactively to nursing students who graduated from the four year program in May 1985. The Bachelor of science degree program is accredited for eight years after which it can be re accredited following review. The accreditation resulted from a self study of the program by Edinboro a nursing faculty and an on site evaluation by a team of visiting pm is from the nursing league. Last year the program received certification from the state Board of examiners. To meet the needs of working adults in the nursing profession the program has expanded its admissions to include registered nurses who May earn academic credits for their Job experience by performing successfully on competency examinations. The program this year enrolled 217 undergraduates. Using the atom to eat los Angeles up Scien lists Are investigating How the byproducts of nuclear reactors might be used to preserve and improve the Quality of foods with the idea of ultimately eliminating hazardous insecticides on farm products. A a the kind of materials we can use to irradiate foods can he derived from two sources either Cobalt 60or cerium 137,? said physicist Manuel Lagunas solar of the a Rocker nuclear Laboratory at the University of California Davis. Cobalt 60 is produced by bombarding natural Cobalt 59, a by product of reactors with High Energy neutrons to transform it in to a product that can be safely used to irradiate agricultural products Lagunas solar said. Cerium 137 is a fission product a material that is produced by the splitting of uranium atoms in the reactor Core. Uranium is the radioactive material that generates the Energy on which most commercial reactors operate. Once the nucleus of uranium atoms Are split they produce smaller atoms a fission products a which provide the photons in visible electromagnetic bits of Energy that the physicist says can be put to beneficial agricultural uses. Lagunas solar explained that irradiating agricultural products May eventually help extend the shelf life of some fruits and vegetables and a a reduce the dependence on harmful the task now is determining which agricultural products will Benefit most from the process the physicist said. A no technology can be utilized indiscriminately. For example you refrigerate bananas. A irradiation operates basically on the same principle. It la be useful in some cases but not others a a he said. However Lagunas solar insists that exposing fruits vegetables and even meats to radiation to prevent destruction caused by harmful microbes May ultimately prove safer than applying toxic chemicals that perform the same Job. A the food absorbs the Energy from the irradiation process and the molecules of the food then make chemical changes a just like when heating food a molecules absorb Energy from the heat and make certain chemical changes. A but the food does not become radioactive because the kind of Energy we utilize does not produce nuclear transmutation which would make things radioactive a he said. Lagunas solar explained the doses of radiation in such a process Are so Low that the produce Dor not absorb radioactivity and is r principle similar to the use of microwave ovens. A for example your Teeth Don become radioactive when you dental x rays because the dose radiation is very Low. A to make things radioactive you have to use High Energy photons invisible units of Energy and a limiting the amount of Energy in the photons you limit the possibility of the food becoming Radi it i Tive a Lagunas solar explained he said scientists also Are stud ing the possibility of machine generated x rays for fib. I irradiation operating on a Prince pie similar to the medical x a process he said. The physicist said some spic Are being irradiated now for let it port and pork was approved for ii radiation last year by the food in drug administration.
