Intelligencer (Newspaper) - September 29, 1989, Doylestown, Pennsylvania Pogee-8 the record Friday. Somber 1989 cleverness backfires dear Abby i am enclosing a Sample of the card i designed As a thank you note for those people who were kind enough to Send Iny son Money for his High school graduation. As you can see it s a printed postcard with the following message thank you for your thoughtful Ness and your gift of Money. Yours truly John Paul Jones not his real Abby i realize that this is not the usual kind of from you and your husband. Your son should write and apologize for not having sent a personal u in the i usual " actually i was very proud that i had been so innovative knowing my son if i had relied on him to write his own thank you notes they would never get done. So what would be better this or no thank you at all9 i even typed the addresses on stick on labels so All he had to do was sign the card with his initials after All his thank yous were sent off i received one of fhe cards Back with the following typewritten message this is really shabby keep your thanks " i have no idea who sent it so i can t even apologize to the person who thought my son s thank you card was offensive. Now i m concerned that More than just one per son thought his card was offensive and i wonder if my husband and i should Send an apology to every one we sent the thank you cards to what is your advice John Paul s Mother dear Mother sorry but i do not share your enthusiasm for the Quick n easy thank you Post card you designed for your son. He s old enough to write a proper thank you note for each and every gift he received which is what he should have done. By making it easy for him to evade this responsibility you Are encouraging laziness do not compound your Gaffe by sending apologies pack recipes keep cooking dear Polly to be truly neat pack All your rec ipes in Cartons and take them to be stored at your Mother s Home Shell throw them away you will be left with the conviction that but for your Mother s Wanton ways you could have been a better Cook otherwise the recipes will continue to grow All Over your House As do the ubiquitous wire coat hangers but with or without them you la keep on Cooke Mary dear Mary i m not sure it solves my problem but your Down to Earth undeniably practical advice certainly brought a smile to a particularly trying day1 thanks your Pointer earns you the Pointer of the week award a copy of my Book Polly s poin ters helpful hints for making everything last longer Polly dear Abby have a problem i m not sure too Many people have. My Boyfriend and my Best Friend Are both 17. They Are both males. My Best Friend Edwin and i have lived next door for 13 years. We Are very very close but there was never a romantic relationship not even a kiss. My Boyfriend Jayson and i have been dating for almost a year. We Are very close but he is extremely jealous of Edwin when Edwin and i go out with his family or even spend time together Jayson Calls it a this really irritates me. I be tried to Tell Jayson that i Don t like Edwin As a Boyfriend Only As a Best Friend but he does t believe me. Abby i have never cheated on Jayson and i never will but he does t Trust me at All. When i ask him Why he does t Trust me. He has no answer he just repeats that he does t Trust me. I need to build Trust with Jayson and still remain Best friends with Edwin i Don t want to give either Friend up they Are both the Best things that Ever happened to me. Frustrated dear frustrated you Don t need to build Trust with Jayson he needs to build Confidence in himself. If Jayson mistrust you for no reason whatsoever that s his problem Don t make it yours dear Abby this is in response to Maggie in who asked if sex on sunday morning before mass was sinful i once attended a seminar in Tucson in which a priest was asked the same question he replied. Of course not just Don t Block the aisle happily wed in Cloquet Minn Universal press Syndicate look first leap second dear or. Brothers my daughter is a child of divorce and although i be tried to reassure her that marriage will work she s scared. Because i m aware of this i m delighted that she s finally going to take the leap with a very handsome Young Man she s Only recently met. What concerns me is that he s been married several times before and i worry that my daughter does t know enough about him to marry. . Wait until she knows him better. H the two love each other this can Only work in their favor and if they Don t care enough about each other to make the marriage last it s far better to learn this now. Judith Wallerstein a psychologist and writer who s studied this subject found that daughters of divorce often select wrong because they re afraid to select right they re so frightened of abandonment or betrayal they pick men they re sure of not losing or ones they Don t care about losing. These women Are often afraid to risk and As she Points out you can t Trust or love without risking. Many women often fail to see themselves As choosers of mates they feel that males Are the ones who do All the choosing so they tend to jump into marriage too soon before they really know the Man dear or. Brothers my husband and i have been married for Only two years but he s already convinced i m having affairs with other men. This is totally untrue i m not remotely interested in anyone else but i am tired of his fits of temper and his jealousy. He needs to control everything including me. I feel restricted As if i have no Freedom. I m beginning to be afraid of him. He s hit me twice and the last time i had a Black Eye. What should i do dear is any Man who strikes a woman or a child is potentially dangerous and unless he s stopped and informed in no Uncertain terms that get worse and he will become More violent. The kind of Man you re describing has to be re educated. He has to learn that men should t expect to control women. Both men and women control themselves he also needs to learn How to express his feelings in words. Men who can t do this Are much More Likely to throw punches. When your husband was Small he probably lacked a Good responsible male role Model. He May even have seen his father abuse his Mother or he himself May have been the victim of physical or emotional abuse. Regardless of his background however Don t allow yourself to become a victim. A jealous Man is an insecure Man. Your husband needs help to change but what happens to you is up to you. Let him know that if he Ever strikes you again you la leave and Don t make this an empty threat. If he refuses to get the help he needs Don t wait around for the next eruption. It could put you in the Hospital. Or the morgue. King features Syndicate Polly Fisher child s hair loss troubling Peter Gott . With Only piano accompaniment he has performed such classics As Candle in the wind and Dan and introduced new songs such As sacrifice from the recently released album sleeping with the it s just another example of John s commitment to letting the music speak for itself after auctioning off All his flamboyant cos Tumes from his -70s Glam Rock period including his be jew a storm behind him Early reports from this tour suggest John is returning to his rambunctious performances. I m not going to come on stage dressed like a John said. Designer Gianni Versaci has made me a whole Bunch of suits and they re not All Black. Some Are Violet others Are Lime Green so it la be pretty Bright. But i m not going to Wear any ridiculous Seq numbers like before. That whole thing is in the past for me now. It was great fun while it lasted but i be changed and now i want people to pay i think it s the strongest rec Ord we be Ever he said. We went Back to our roots and tried to do something special and i feel we succeeded sleeping with the past uses songs of the 60s for its inspiration especially those from Amer Ica s artists. We be always been Good at writing songs such As Philadelphia John said and in a sense it s the first conceptual Al bum we be done since Captain fantastic and the Brown dirt Cowboy Back in 1975." Bemie and i came up with the strikes even though it spawned a no. 2 hit single i Don t Wanna go on with you like so he said Ber Nie and i sat Down and decided we d plan the next album a lot More carefully and More importantly we d write an album that would pay homage to our roots. You know when we started writ ing together Back in 1969, our inspiration came from the same records and artists Ray Charles Jackie Wilson Otis red Ding Sam it Dave Etc. So we decided this time to take the spirit 54-Inch High boots he wore in Tommy and 1976 s statue of Liberty John stripped Down his show for last year s tour dressing in simple designer suits and letting his band play up again. After All that s How i started out As just a musician much of John s current enthusiasm comes from the new rec Ord which he wrote with Long time partner Bernie Taupin. Paid tribute to All the great old soul songs we d grown up with and i feel that also gives it a real sense of John was t completely Satis fied with his last album Reg and try and make an 80s record that captured All of that a White soul record for the 80s." the duo composed 20 songs Only 10 of which were used. We were quite cutthroat in Taupin said. If a song did t fit in with the rest of the album we d discard it no matter How Good it was and believe me there were some great songs that just did t make it onto the Al John and Taupin need t have worried so much about the final product. The album blasts off with the driving reggae influenced Durban a song about the political problems involved in South Africa s Diamond mining. The first single Healing is already a top 40 hit using As its basis the inspiration of Mil More gospel influence is Evi Dent m the title track while a tribute to the drifters can be found in club at the end of the some listeners May no Tice a similarity Between the song i heard it through the Grapevine and John s Stone s throw from the duo also salutes Ray Charles with the Ballad amazes fans can expect to hear four or five of the new cuts this week end. John never used to play More than one or two new tunes on tour but he obviously wants to show off this personally satisfying Effort. In John s words if Reg strikes Back was the Start of a new birth for me in a lot of ways i feel this new album is even More exciting Tor me. Now i . And play these new songs Elton John appears at the spec Trum tonight and saturday at i. More tickets were made available last week far both shows. Information 336-3600
