Des Moines Iowa Homestead (Newspaper) - August 2, 1917, Des Moines, Iowa More Ilian 150, in m m if k m Iii Al vol. Lxii. No. 31. Whole no. 3121 car Hin was purchased the first sings Werf Small one blew of r 9 r the byte cation Tor the vent of three other month the year is the Cost prohibitive in these Days of Corn and wheat i can answer these questions from per Sonal experience having kept an accurate rec Ord of every cent spent on an automobile since the Day it was purchased april 1, 1915. The agricultural Extension department of the state College supplied me with a Booklet entitled a Cost keeping sys tem for the it is arranged systematically with ruled and headed pages for every expense from gasoline and Oil to motoring apparel and repair parts and jobs. By Faith fully recording every expenditure any Farmer can find out exactly what his automobile is costing him just As i have done. To begin with mine is a four Cylinder car of the make of 1915. It is a popular make and while it shall be nameless i have no hesitancy in say ing that its list Price was by driving a Sharp bargain and paying Cash i secured the car equipped with an extra tire casing and inner tube and a set of chains at a 5 per cent discount making the actual the first year i drove the car Miles the second year Miles. Al together up to april 1, 1917, the car had covered Miles. What had pleasure for the entire family cannot it Cost per mile and per year Tho first year of any car the principal expense bar the tires in dollars and cent at 35 and 50 come. The second year this expense had risen to of which was for two new inner tubes. While four new outer casings were bought that year Only two inner tubes were needed i make it a policy to keep my tires carefully inflated Twenty pounds to the Inch As recommended by the tire manufacturers and never to run on a deflated casing any distance whatever changing the tire the minute a puncture or a Blowout occurs. By using a tire gauge Cost ing every other week i see to it that my tires Are properly inflated a most important thing if one wishes to get full value Cut of his tires and car. Lubricating Oil has never been an expense Worth much considering pro Viding a Good Grade of Oil is used and Tho bearings Are never allowed to be come Oil less. The first year my car Cost for lubricating Oil and the second year an average of about .06 of a cent a mile for Oil. The first year the supplies Cost ?11.95, the Prin Cipal items being for a sixty gallon gasoline tank for a tire tester for a Chamois for a Good sponge and for a tire cover this last an unwarranted extravagance in Iny present opinion. The second year the supplies Cost the two Prin be computed items being for a bumper and for a spot Light. Both Are a warranted in my opinion. The bumper More anon. Throughout the summer of 1915 for 10.6, 11.6 and 13.6 cents per gallon in sixty gallon lots. This was from 4 to 6 cents cheaper than it could be bought at the filling stations in town in Small quantities. The Cost of a sixty gallon can is soon met in the saving by buying in Large quantities. That year Gaso line was a cent lower still in 100-gallon lots although in most towns in my Section of the country that is no longer the Case. From april 1, 1915, to april 1, 1916, my car consumed 485 Gallons of Gaso line costing the car covered Miles in this time. This was an average of fifteen and one half Miles to the gallon and a Cost of .7 cent to the mile. From april 1, 1916, to april 1, 1917, the car consumed 476 Gallons of gasoline costing throughout the summer of sold Soia Miles a new one on the left rear wheel after new casings when the car had gone Miles. 1912 gasoline was Selling for 1g.6 and 16.5 cents the casings bought the first a third item was for a second pair of chains the summer being wet and chains on All four wheels being necessary in an emergency. Repair parts and jobs the first year Cost the principal item being a front fender demolished by a careless Driver whose number i took but from whom i was never Able to collect the Money. Minor re pairs to the starter the Bat Tery and new Mica in the rear made up the bulk of Tho balance. Repair parts and jobs the second year aggregated the principal expenses being the grinding of valves the removal of Carbon from the cylinders re pair to a smashed bumper my fault this time and new plates in the Battery i am a firm believer in insurance. I figure that i can not afford to lie awake at night worrying Over the possibility of loss when i can prevent the worry even if the concluded on Page 13. In
