Delaware County Daily Times (Newspaper) - August 6, 1975, Chester, Pennsylvania Sbandi's dumps Gross RoseMarie Sports calendar CHESTER Sbandi's Cafe scored four runs in the first inning and one in the second 'and pitcher Carmen lanieri and his defense made the lead hold up in a 5-2 win over Gross Place Tuesday. The win gives Sbandi's a two- game sweep of the Over-30 League semifinal playoff series and puts Sbandi's in the finals against the winner of the Chester Youth-Liberty Ford series which resumes tonight at Scott Park. lanieri was touched for two first inning runs then stopped the defending champions on three hits over the final six frames. Losing pitcher Floyd Furniss gave up ten hits. John McGinn opened Sbandi's first inning with a single, then Jack Muscolini singled. With one out, Harry Brooks singled McGinn home then lanieri hit a sacrifice fly. The third run scored on an error and Leo Levandowski singled to knock in the fourth run. Gross got its two runs in the bottom of the first as Jim Clarke singled, Butch Baracliffe hit into a fielder's choice, Joe Kelly doubled and Lee Longhurst slapped a two-r- un single. Sbandi's got the final run of the game in the top of the second inning. Ray (Jaws) Karpin, swinging with another, bat after breaking his favorite' model in batting practice, got the rally going with a single he" was still talking about several hours later. Lakers coast ASTON The Lakers ex- ploded for 48 second half points while holding the Trailblazers to 25 to post a 77-50 decision in first game of the best-of-3 series for the Perm Delco Basketball League cham- pionship. The Lakers, coached by former Sun Valley High star Harry Warren, had five double figure scorers with Dave Nuyannes leading the attack with 18 points. Harry Poole scored 15 points, Billy Goodman had 13, Mike Donato scored 12 and Em Driscoll hit 10 points. Poole, who did a good job defensively on the Trailblazers' leading scorer, George Hor- nibrook, and Rich (Whale) Connolly controlled the boards for the Lakers. Hornibrook, who had been averaging 27 points per game, and Ken Ednie scored 18 points apiece for the Blazers. 'Metropolitan NeW York defeated Delco, 2-0, with two unearned runs in the ninth inning. ;rpete Filson blanked: Metropolitan on two hits for the first seven innings. Also joining head coach Willie Wood on the Bell staff are former Cleveland Browns' running back Leroy Kelly as offensive backfield coach and former Green Bay Packer star Herb Adderley, who will handle the defensive backs and linebackers. Sbandi's win, eliminating the defending champion, assured that the league would not have a defending champion repeat as playoff winner for the fourth consecutive season. D-H-L bows in tourney DREXEL HILL-Drexel- Hilltop-Uanerch, one of two Delaware County entries in the state Babe Ruth tournament for 13-year-olds being played here, was defeated by Phoenixville, 8-2, in one of two games played here Tuesday. In the other, Jim Leonard pitched a one-hitter and Paul Nance batted in two runs as, Hazelton eliminated Hatboro, 3- 0. Phoenixville put D-H-L away with a six run fifth inning rally. Winning pitcher Jack Dettra, who struck out U, helped his own cause by batting in three runs. Action continues today in the double elimination tourney with Broomall playing Hazelton at 3 p.m. and D-H-L battling Blue Valley at Levittown and Phoenixville, the' only two unbeaten teams, clash at 3 p.m. Thursday. winners The late inning heroics of Al Pierdomenico ,and Ralph Laxton paced Rose Marie Lounge and Scheivert Real Estate to victories' Tuesday in the Industrial Valley Softball League playoffs. Pierdomenico ripped a three- run homer in the sixth inning to wipe out a 4-3 Heiden's lead and get Rosemarie on its way to an 8-4 victory. The best-of-3 series is'tied, l- 1, with the deciding game slated Thursday, 6 p.m., at Clay ton Park No. 4. Laxton, who wound up with a 3-for4 day, drove in the deciding run with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the eighth inning as Scheivert nipped Clifton Precision, 5-4, in their playoff opener. Rose Marie's Jim Bigas added two insurance runs with a two-run single in the.seventh. Bigas, John Harron, Harry Schukraft, Bill Taylor and Babe West each had two hits for Rose Marie. Pierdomenico was the winning pitcher. Jim Jordan drove in three of Scheivert's runs with ,two sacrifice flys. Bill Wright and Gunnar Steward each had three hits with Steward including a double, triple and RBI. Schivert and Clifton play game No. 2, 6 p.m. today, at Lima field.
