Delaware County Daily Times (Newspaper) - August 6, 1975, Chester, Pennsylvania DELAWARE COUNTY DAILY TIMES Leogue Haab'stakes Fenza lead KaUy.Times photo by BERT HODGE OUl'.WAS the call by the umpires on this play at first base in Phi'Del Softball League playoff game as Upper Darby's Karen ftufhven gets easy win Wills took wide throw but was ruled to have held corner of bag to retire Ridley Park's Gail Lenz Haab's Sunoco reclaimed first place from idle Marple Newtown Tuesday in the Delco League's Fenza Division by whipping Media, 8-2. In another game, Tinicum AC nipped Broomall, 5-4. Doug Ellis fired a four-hitter and struck out six as he won his third game without a loss for Haab's. Joe Miller continued his torrid hitting by smacking a two-run homer to key Haab's four-run first inning outburst against losing pitcher Ralph Orobono. Following Miller's blast, Rick Harrison doubled and Bud Bostwick ripped a two-run homer. Bostwick added a two-run double in the third inning and Jim Vankoski and Dave Lan- sberry knocked in runs with hits in the fifth inning. Media got its two runs in the fourth on Bob Daly's home run. Ray Davis got fifth inning relief help from Steve Ryan as he won his third game in four decisions for Tinicum AC. Tinicum scored three second inning runs off losing pitcher Pete Bellis on a pair of Broomall errors, a pair of walks. Clay Schroeder's two- run single and Angelo Tiburzi's infield grounder. Broomall scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on John Reusche's infield hit but lost a chance for more when Bob Joy was thrown out at the plate. In the fifth. Joe Grace unloaded a two out, two-run triple for Tinicum AC after Broomall narrowly failed to get what would have been an inning ending double play. Broomall kayoed Davis with three fifth inning runs. After a pair of walks, Davis recorded a pair of strikeouts before another pair of walks forced in a run. Mike Falcone-stroked a two- run single and Ryan replaced Davis, walking Gary Strowig to again load the bases before getting Reusche on a, fly ball to end the inning. In an important match tonight, Marple Newtown hosts Tinicum AC as M-N battles to overtake Haab's for the Fenza Division lead while Tinicum AC battles to post the best, regular, season record and assure itself the home field advantage should it reach the playoff f nals. RACING ACTION LINE 609-467-3344 I First-and-10 for Phils PHILADELPHIA (AP) The fans screamed when the Philadelphia Phillies traded first baseman Willie Montanez to the San Francisco Giants for outfielder Garry Maddox. Montanez was a very popular player in Philadelphia. And he performed well for the Phillies for four seasons. The Phillies received a lot of mail protesting the deal. The switchboards of radio stations in the area lit up that Sunday in May 'that Montanez went for Maddox. the fans asked. Phillies' general manager Paul Owens said Maddox would answer the question by the outfielder's performance. Maddox was hitting only .195, as a pantime player for the Giants. A little less than three weeks after he joined the Phillies. Maddox suffered a knee fracture. He was placed on the disabled list. The 25-year-old Maddox came back June 30, and since then he has played center field like a Willie Mays or Joe DiMaggio. He's plays that defy description. And how he has hit. Since' June 30, in 36 games, Maddox has hit .368-49 for 133. with 21 RBI. That .195 average is now .285. He's been a .328 hitter since joining the Phillies. Maddox continued his hot hand Tuesday night as. he slammed a three-run homer and an RBI single in a Its-run first inning that carried the Phillies to a 13-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. He had three hits before being given a late inning rest. "This is the Maddox I remembered, the guy we traded said Phillies manager Danny Ozark after the Phillies beat the Cubs for the first time in five games at home and only the fourth in 11 decisions. "I remember when they (Giants) had Bobby Bonds, Matthews and Maddox." Ozark said. "I called them three secretariats. Now we've got one of'em." The Phillies came out smokin', Tuesday night against Cubs starter Bill Bonham, and then rewievef Ken Crosby. Sixteen batters went to the plate in the Phillies' biggest first since They slammed 10 hits for 10 runs. In addition to Maddox' threerun homer, Mike Schmidt slammed a two-run shot over the center field fence and Tommy Button doubled home a pair before Bonham was lifted for Crosby. The eruption made it easy for young righthander Dick Ruth- ven, who was recalled Monday from Toledo of the International League. Ruthven had one bad inning, a Chicago third. Rick Monday delivered three of those with a triple that got past left fielder Greg Luzinski. Schmidt also wound up with four RB when he hit his second home run of the game, a fifth inning blast that also 'scorec Johnstone. It was the 23rd of the season for Schmidt, his sixth since the All-Star game break It was the 10th time in his 3M> season National League careei that Schmidt has hit twc homers in one game! Dave Cash opened the firsi inning with a single and Larrj Bowa extended his hitting streak through 16 games with i single. Maddox then homered. Then Greg Luzinski singled Johnstone doubled and Huttoi doubled the runners home tc make it 5-0. Schmidt homerec for two more. That was all for Bonham. Johnny dates greeted Crosbj with a single, and Ruthver sacrificed. Cash, up' for the second time, walked. BOWE fouled out. but Maddox singlec home the eighth run. The firsUaght Phillies to face Bonham and Crosby got hits, two shy'of the major league, record 10 for consecutive hits m an inning held by four National League and one American League team. Brooklyn did it last against Pittsburgh in the sixth inning of a 1930 game.
