We cannot be mistaken in the Assumption that the spirit of the gospel inculcates on Earth and Good to men. Indeed so strongly did Christ rep Bate All the causes which Ixl to strife that there Are numerous Christian sects composed of intelligent and conscientious men believe that War is wholly unjustifiable and never to be resorted to for any purpose. No party however in this country has assumed this extreme ground. But the democratic party have maintained that it was better to is to agree with our adversary while we were in the Way Wilh to precipitate the nation nto bloodshed. And when War bad become an appalling fact that party maintained that t should be prosecuted with the View of main lining the integrity of the Constitution and for no other purpose and not for one Day longer than was necessary to effect this object. Because of these order ate views they stigmatized by the Beau Licati As sympathy cers Wilh the rebels. For the Constitution and the for War by copy devastating cruel remorseless War Forit sown Sake has been the anti Christian policy and purpose of republicanism As avowed by the exponents we have named before. The liberties of the american people Are contained in their Constitution. But republicanism has been in haste to destroy that repository of our Freedom. That judgement not which is Lookin Only of an impartial world on with amazement but of isl of Kentucky that if the emancipation proclamation shall be carried out the legislature of the state will vote unanimously for secession from the Union and annexation to the Southern confederacy. Gov. And despotic words and deeds Are being exemplified. From the Boson the fort Warren Pris Keks. Below is the order for the release of the state prisoners at fort Warren constituting a general jail delivery at that Point. The phraseology of the order will strike some persons As a Little promiscuous. The names specified appear Only in the certificate of release furnished by Dimmick while the order of the department Only mentions in general terms the Maryland state so that none May be overlooked in this act of amnesty any other state prisoners in the custody of the commandant. We infer from this that these gentlemen were arrested with out or arrest and have been held in prison without Law so no record of their names even much less any specification of their imputed offence has been kept at the War department. We must say that this seems to us a very in re Pons ble Way of doing Public business and none the less so that among the gentlemen re leased Are persons of not a Little social distinction and Public instance the late mayor of Baltimore and various Mem Bers of the Maryland legislature who were seized and incarcerated when that body was broken up by the violent action of the administration More that a Jear ago. We have understood that the arrest in question was then made by order of one of or. Lincoln s secretaries with out the knowledge of the others or of the president and also that at the very time reports were in preparation by commit tees of both branches of the legislature show ing the unconstitutionality of secession which would undoubtedly have been accepted by the legislature had no such extraordinary inter Ference been had Wii i that Assembly. In consequence of that action however these gentlemen have now Boon imprisoned during this Long period and at last their prison doors Are thrown open and they Are permitted to go at Large without any condition it being Well mown that they steadly declined placing hem elves in the awkward and not very honorable position of thus acknowledging themselves guilty of charges which have never been exhibited against them. They have had the per Sonal inconvenience of this confinement but t is Plain that instead of victims they thus termed Devotion to our cause wich alone car sustain a the y.
