Two weeks ago the Herald published an article stating volunteers received Money for their services after the strike ended. After the article appeared the Herald received a Call from a Dauphin woman stating she had acted As a Volunteer but received no payment. Her position she said was somewhat different from the other volunteers because she was looking after one of her parents. A a Hospital administrator John Lysak said we either had to take our parents Home or come in and look after them a the woman said. However she said while looking after her Parent for three weeks she also helped care for other patients. She says she was disturbed when she read about the payments. A it kind of got to me a she says. A i think i would have been Happy if no one was paid. But if the others got paid Why not me a she says she was told she did not receive any payment because a Lysak said the ones that did no to get paid Are the ones with families in she estimated there were about 10 volunteers that fit into this category. Two other volunteers contacted by the Herald expressed similar thoughts. Bahniuk still in Good health although not too talkative celebrated her birthday at the Dauphin personal care Home. Bahniuk was born in the Village of per Fateye in Austria in 1880. She moved to Canada and married in 1908 to Michael Bahniuk. The Bah Luiks Farmed in Saskatchewan until 1919 when they moved to the Dauphin area. They Farmed North of Dauphin until 1950 when her husband died. She moved into Dauphin in 1950 and has been living in the personal care since 1979. Residents of the personal care Home along with family members helped celebrate the occasion. Additional funds will be made available to Manitoba hospitals and personal care Homes to help them meet new budgetary pressures arising from recent wage settlements and increases in the costs of materials and supplies says health minister Bud Sherman. The minister said that the decision will allow the Manitoba health services commission to finalize budget negotiations now under Way with the health facilities. Sherman says that the hospitals and personal care Homes received eight per cent funding increase in april which has been exceeded by labor settlements and current estimate for Supply Cost increase. He says that where increases Are individually substantiated facilities will be allowed an economic increase of 9.5 per cent to provide for minimum wage rate and Supply Cost increases. John Lysak administrator of the Dauphin Hospital said that he be sure what the effect of the provinces a move would have on the hospitals ability to stay on budget until he met with the commission.
