leaving office after reapportionment to collect slate pensions regardless of age the 1974 state election followed a reapportionment the pen Sion uproar started after the associated press reported june 20 that the 1965 Law would Grant several legislators in their 30s immediate lifetime pensions of at least a year during the next three months the legislature beat Back pension repeal attempts by a freshman legislator who said he Learned of the pensions from the a Story but dozens of California newspapers radio and Tele vision stations carried stories on the subject and editorialized against the pensions the legis lature returned in special ses Sion and wiped out the Bonus the legislator who pushed for an end to the Windfall capitalized on his role in the pension fight and went on to defeat a 12year incumbent on nov 5 11 incumbent state legislators were Defeated in addition to the eight rejected in the june primary and two who left office voluntarily thirteen of those legislators would have been eligible to draw pensions starting in january no matter what their age for example assemblyman William Bagley a 45yearold Marin county Republican Defeated in his bid for state con troller threatening to Cut off air port development funds to communities which continue to operate sanitary landfills or Gar Bage dumps near Airport run ways or fail to take action to keep Birds away the measure was issued by the Federal aviation administration tuesday As a result of a crash of a Lear Jet last year at Airport near Atlanta in which seven persons were killed and one on the ground was injured the National transportation safety Board concluded that Birds attracted to the Airport area by a garbage dump had been sucked into the planes Jet engines causing them to lose Power although the Atlanta incident is the Only one where Birds attracted by a garbage dump caused an Accident the Faa said the number of air plane Bird collisions has increased in recent years the new guidelines Call for closing All landfills and dumps located within 10000 feet from Airport runways used by Turbo Jet aircraft or 5000 feet from runways used by Piston engine aircraft landfills located beyond
