An Extracl of a Letter from a Foreign Minifer at Francfort. * The Eleftor of Triers, befides the Proteft which he ' has made againft the marching of foreign Troops thro' ' his Territories, ajid from an Intereft which this Prince ' has in the Prefervation of Fort Keihl, has addrefs'd a � Refcript to tlie Diet of Francfort, whereby his Electoral ' Highneis loudly complains, that Count Furfteroberg, * Governor of this Fort, after having by two feveral Letters * reprefented to the Diet the Neceffity of keeping up the 1 Fortifications of the Bert of Keihl, as well becaufe the * Expences of the Demolition would' amount to 200000 ' Florins, as becaiife they might have been re-eitablifh'd � for half that Sum, and that, moreover, it was the only � Fortrefs in thofe Parts which was capable of being pat .Notwithstanding thd fair Promifes of the Marquis de Eufenada, firft Mmifter of the Infant Don Philip, the Spaniards have quartered Troops upon our Eftates of St. Victor and Chapter, who commit divers .Excefles there. On Friday laft the Poft-Mafters-General appointed Mr. Henry Potts, AflUtant to Robert Gidding's, "Efq; Clerk of the Chefter-Road, to be Comptroller of the General-Poft-Office, in the room of Col. Jofeph Bell; and laft Saturday their Honours appointed Mr. John Barber, Infpe&or of the Dead Letters, to be Deputy-Comptroller i but the Place of Alphabet-Keeper, irTthe room of Mr. Archer, is not yet difpos'd of. On Saturday died at his Houfe in Miles-Lane, Cannon-Street, Capt. John Merry, many Years in the Streights Trade, Brother to Mr. Richard Merry, an eminent Merchant of "this City. Laft Week a Maftiff belonging to Mr. Locke, a Matter Builder, in Channel-Row, Weftminfter, which was let looie in the Yard on Nights, feiz'd on an Apprentice Boy who got up in the Morning to let the Men in to Work, and almoft tore the Calf of his Leg off: The Boy lamentably crying out caus'd the Men to alarm the Family, who immediately got up and let them in, after which it was with great Difficulty they made the Dog leave his Hold of the Bo), who was directly carried ' to the Infirmary in James-Street, Weftminfter. On Saturday Night Thomas Rea (a known Sharper and Barrow-Man) was committed to New-Prifon by Col. De Veil, for cheating and defrauding feveral Perfons of Money to a confiderable Value with falfe and loaded Dice. As was Anne Broom to the fame Place by the fame Gentleman, for cheating and defrauding Mr. George Chambers, an Embroiderer, (her Mailer) of 81. 14 s. by taking up in his Name Gold and Silver Thread after fhe had left his Service. As was alfo Sarah Handyxripple, and Jane Powell, other-wife Guttheridge, for ftealing Goods privately out of the Shop of Mrs. Green in Cranbourn-Alley. We hear that the Society of Calves Heads meet this Day at their Prefident's Houfe, to congratulate each other upon the Conqueft they lately gain'd Over their Neighbours the Cods Heads ; their Dilhes are to conlift of Calves Heads, drefs'd in an elegant Manner, by the Dire&ion of the Pre-fident, who loves Heads, but'.has an utter Aver/ion to Brains. The poor Prifoners of his Majefty's Prifon of the Fleet being very numerous, and in a very miferable Condition, (notwithstanding the; fgwrsfCharitics this Winter) are ftill oblig'd to take thisMerhod to defire all well-difpos'd Chriftians to take fome Companion on them, they having no Boxes in the Street, as ufual, which is a very great Lofs to them. Such Quantities of Rum are arriv'd from Jamaica, that the beft and full Proof is fold at the Punch-Houfe on Ludgate-Hill, for 7 s. 4d. a Gallon. It's very remarkable, that the Licence at the London Punch-Houfe expir'd a few Days ago, and that there is now but one fubfiftir.g, and that expires a few Days hence. The wonderful Artift from the City of Norwich, who has given fuch general Satisfaction to moft of the Nobility, is to be feen in a commodious Room at the Rummer Tavern, Charing-Crofs, this Week, and no longer; and on Monday next at the Manfion Houfe and French Horn, nrar the Royal Exchange. He has had the Honour to be view'd by Sir Hans Sloane, and part of the Royal Society, who efteem him the moft furprifing Curiofity that has been feen in the Memory of Man Admiralty-Office, 25 January, 1742?
