launched Portsmouth no the uss growler the navys second guided missile submarine was launched at hich fide saturday at the Portsmouth naval shipyard and quickly herded to wharf Side where she will be fitted out editorial Mahoney claim refuted lets look at the record was the Sage advice of a great american whenever confronted by the fallacious claims of certain politicians it is time that this test be applied to the Oft repeated claim of George p Mahoney that he is a vote getter of superlative ability and that his presence on a ticket brings out the vote in the first place it Borders on the ridiculous for a Man who has never been elected to Public office who has lost two general elections and three out of four primaries to boast about his vote getting ability furthermore the claim becomes All the More invalid when the records show that the leading candidate for the Maryland democratic senatorial nomination mayor Thomas Dalesandro of Baltimore has never lost an election in 22 primary and general election campaigns and polled Ever increasing vote totals in his three elections to the mayoralty of the nations sixth largest City now let us examine the record on candidate Mahoneyq claim to unusual vote getting ability obviously he cant claim any kind of Success As a general election Winner since he lost both of his general elec Tion campaigns he was actually Defeated in the 1956 primary by former u s senator Millard e Tydings for the senatorial nomination and Only got on the ticket by action of the democratic state Central committee when illness forced Tydings to withdraw and in that election two years ago Manney was Defeated by senator Butler by a greater margin than when he lost to senator Beall in 1952 and no one has Ever claimed that sen Butler is any vote getting wizard Baltimore county in which Mahoney lives has the largest registered democratic majority of any county in Maryland so what does the record show for the great vote getter in his contest against j Glenn Beall of Allegany county in the general election of 1952 in his Home county heavily democratic he polled 55476 votes while Beall the Republican nominee received 71543 a majority for the Allegany county Republican of Over 16000 votes not Only that but Mahoney lost his Home precinct in that election and also in his con test with sen Butler in 1956 in 1956 Mahoney who would have the democrats believe he is a great vote getter polled 62082 votes in democratic Baltimore county while Republican sen Butler received 86524 votes a majority of 24442 for Mahoneyq opponent this record shows Mahoney was worse off by Over 8000 votes i in his second try than he was in his first general election Effort Mahoneyq vote record in Baltimore City which has a 3 to 1 registered democratic majority0 in 1952 against Beall Mahoney received 180378 votes a majority of 34551 in 1956 against Butler Baltimore gave Mahoney 152898 for a majority of Only 5137 thus Mahoneyq vote in Baltimore decreased 27480 from 1952 to 1956 How does Mahoneyq statewide vote compare with the total democratic vote in Maryland seven congressional districts it should be tremendously larger to hear out the Mahoney claim that he is the Champion vote getter of the democratic party in 1952 Mahoneyq statewide vote ran nip and tuck with the total vote for democratic congressional candidates he received 406370 votes while the demo cratic congressional vote totalled 405062 not an indication of outstanding voter Appeal by any Standard four years later in 19561 Mahoneyq total state vote fell Well below the democratic vote polled in the seven congressional districts Mahoney Gressional candidates 444418 As to Mah Neys other his name on the ticket brings out the is this Refu tation in the record in 1950 the total vote for governor in Maryland was 645631 while in 1952 the presidential total was 902074 in 1954 the vote for Ioveino totalled 700484 As against the 1956 presidential total of 932351 which proves that presidential election years bring out the larger voting candidate Mahoney Mahoneyq chief argument in this Campaign is that the size of his vote in 1956 Marks him As an outstanding vote getter and wants democrats to believe that he personally brought out the record vote of 1956 if he did bring out the voters they must have got their signals mixed because 139630 More Marylander voted for president Eisenhower two years ago than for Mahoney and senator Butler Defeated him by 52951 Voles nearly 10000 More than balls majority Over him in 1952 it is Only natural that with More voters than there were 10 or 20 years ago All candidates poll More votes what elects candidates however is a majority of the ballots cast in a particular election it is ridiculous to Point to some 1952 or 1956 total As being higher than somebody else received years before when an opponent also registers an increase sufficient to win the election the truth of the matter is that the More Voles Mahoney gets the More decisively is he Defeated when he polled 406370 votes in 1952 he lost the election by 43453 when he received 420108 votes in 1956 he lost by 52951 the democratic parly has in mayor Dalesandro an assured Winner whose service in the Maryland legislature in inc us House of representatives and As three limes mayor of Baltimore fits him for further service As a representative of Maryland in the us Senate Here is the kind of Man Maryland democracy needs a candidate who gets More votes than his opponent finally it May be pertinent to recall that since George p Mahoney entered the party picture eight years ago running alternately for governor and Sena Tor the democrats have lost every gubernatorial and senatorial election in Maryland 4big three gets blast by Reuther
