1934 Game iy SUTtft KEGG THE DEATH OF EMIL SLDER mayor of Thomas W Va brings back memories of 1934 when he brought his Thomas High School football team 1 here to meet LaSalle in a Thanksgiving Day contest at old Community Park That was the year LaSaUe and Allegany severed football relations and the Explorers landed Thomas for their Turkey Day opponent In fact two games were played at Community Park on Thanksgiving Allegany and Penn Ave nue later to become Fort Hill clashing in the morning and LaSalle and Thomas in the after noon During the regular season Thomas won all of its games but one being tied by Belington to be come the first undefeated team in the schools his tory LaSalle on the other hand had beaten only Hyndman and tied Penn Avenue but the Explorers sprang an upste by nipping the Mountaineers 13 to 12 Star of Emils Thomas terrors was a fullbackby the name of Amerigo Tonelli who later was to gain AllAmerica honorable mention as a center at the University of Southern California Tonelli however was outshone by his rival fullback Jim Kerrigan scoring both of LaSalles touchdowns and playing a hangup game on defense Suder who died in Clarksburg last Thurs day of ahearl began his coaching career at Thomas in the fall of 1928 and held the post until 1950 when he resigned but remained in the teaching profession He was a teacher at Thomas and later at Mountaineer High the consolidated school for 35 years Tonelli wasnt the only one of Emils proteges to make good Barney Gedwilas a 1932 graduate captained West Virginia Universitys 1936 track and field team A distance runner Gedwilas was in con tention for the 36 Olympics team that being the year when Jesse Owens won everything in Ger many except a handshake from Adolph Hitler Der Fuehrer refusing to acknowledge Jesse because 1 he was a Negro and 2 because he had humili ated his superrace athletes Another one of Suders athletic pupils at Thomas was Charley Strauss who later entered the coaching ranks and is presently teaching at Garrett County Northern High An outstanding semipro baseball catcher Charley caught Boots Poffenberger when the exmajor leaguer pitched Am vets to the BiState League championship short ly after the end of World War II Thomas Pligh School was Emil Suders alma mater After graduation he attended Potomac State College where he won letters in football basketball and track He taught school for a year at Benbush Tucker County W Va before enrolling at West Virginia where he played football and basketball and captained the wrestling team in his senior year Emil started his teaching and footballbas ketball coaching career at Thomas in the fall of the year he received his degree from WVU In his early years at Thomas the school was with out a gymnasium and it was necessary to prac tice in Davis and play all hoop games away from home Services for the former coach who was 59 were held this morning in Thomas YOU HAVENT SEENTHE last of the King and His Court the fabulous fourman softball team which has played in Cumberland the last three years CBSTV has taped the entire show put on by Eddie Feigner the wonder pitcher and his three teammates Jones Al Jackson and Bill Kehrer Tt will be aired the coming fall on Sunday Sports Spectacular The television show Faith for Today also had Feigner as its guest for a half hour This along with some color shots of a game will also be released later Then too Time magazine is scheduled to fea ture the King and His Court in the issue which hits the newsstands tomorrow The story was written by Ray Kennedy who covered the teams recent game sponsored by WBZ in Boston for muscular dystro phy research The fourman team has 45 more games to play in this its 17th season before heading for a tour of Hawaii Japan
