Corbin Times Tribune (Newspaper) - March 17, 1990, Corbin, Kentucky Local students compete win in Cha meet by Veronica Carmical i Williamsburg High school Williamsburg members of the Kentucky association of the future homemakers of America recently competed in Star events students taking action for recognition at Bell county High school. Karen Manning competed in the Cha facts test event she received a three Star rating. Veronica Carmical and Eva Farrar competed in the Little friends group get ent. Their project entailed educating second and third graders on the four Basic food groups and each of the children that were involved made a nutritious snack. Story lords help teach Reading skills by Piper Plummer staff writer Chorzel is once again trying to rid the world of readers and nor Bert a with the help of students in mrs. Lee Hensley a Reading class a is being called upon to save the world from this evil villian. Iti Orzel and Norbert Are fictional characters that Star in 12 tapes created by the Kentucky educational network to help children improve their Reading skills. In each of the 15-minute segments Norbert must save the world from destruction by using his Reading skills. Mrs. Hensley who teaches at a Littley county Central elementary said she ordered the tapes when she discovered How helpful they could be in teaching children different Reading skills. A Norbert saves the world by solving problems with his Reading she said. A in each tape he uses a different skill sometimes it s context clues and other times he must figure out the meaning of a new Norbert s ultimate goal in the tapes is to reach the land of the Story lords. After the last tape mrs. Hensley dressed up As the Story lord and presented each student with a ring similar to the one worn by Norbert. A i dressed up As the Story lord and gave the students the rings and certificates to make the tapes More exciting Quot she said. Mrs. Hensley also created mobiles and games to re enforce the skills presented in the tapes. The program was created to instill desire within each of the students to read mrs. Hensley said. Eva Farrar and Veronica Carmical were among those in the class who taught. They spent weeks preparing for the lesson they taught to mrs. Renfrow a second Grade. In their lesson they reviewed what the group before had taught and then explained the amount of Servings of the four food groups a person needs in a Day. They had the children categorize pictures of foods into the four food groups. They also taught the children a song to help them remember How Many Servings of each they need. At the end of the lesson the children Sang the song again and seemed to have Learned. Both Eva and Veronica liked teaching. Eva liked it because of the children a enthusiasm Veronica enjoyed seeing the express Ion on their faces when they Learned something. The kids enjoyed learning too. Teaching was a unique experience for them. �?o1 see that elementary teachers must prepare Well ahead of Veronica stated. And they Learned to always be prepared.
