Colorado Springs Hispania News (Newspaper) - August 1, 1987, Colorado Springs, Colorado A Besta Dos w Twenty years of Colorado state fair fiesta Royalty on september 6, 1987 fiesta Day will celebrate its 20th anniversary with its annual mass Parade and numerous activities scheduled throughout the Day at the Colorado state fair grounds which will include the recognition of Twenty years of fiesta Royalty. With the efforts made during the last of the 1966 edition of the Colorado state fair the seed of fiesta Day was first presented to Gyde Fugate then state fair manager by George Sandoval then general manager of Capi. Or. Fugate rejected the idea. George and Henry Reyes then worked on the new fair manager Don Svedman. They invited him to attend a Antonio Aguilar show in Denver and introduced him to Antonio. Don Svedman liked the idea and during the fair of 1967, Antonio Aguilar encouraged the state fair fiesta Days. One idea led to another and the present fiesta Day was born. With the first fiesta Queen pageant taking place that same year the state fair the outcome of the first pageant named Rose Mary Ayala Valdez 1967 fiesta Queen. Rose Mary is a resident of Pueblo and a parishioner of St. Joseph Church. Ioner of St. Joseph Church. She is also an Active member of the diocese of Pueblo. Lucille Maravilla became the reigning Queen in 1968 and now she resides in san Jose California. Jenny Martinez reigned As Queen for two consecutive years in.1969 and 1970 and she now resides in Virginia. In 1971, Beverly Payne became Queen a resident of Pueblo who is currently a teacher for school District #60. She was followed by Cathy Chavez in 1972 and by Cantita Martinez Soto a resident of Pueblo in 1973. Luisa Miera Hernandez now residing in new Mexico was the 1974 fiesta Queen. The reigning Queen for 1975 was Alice Martinez Lopez who resides in Thorton Colorado. Salina Martinez of Colorado Springs was the 1974 Queen. That same year she was Colorado Springs Queen . Virginia Serna Flores was the 1978 Queen and the first Queen to be allowed to perform in the grandstands during fiesta Day activities. She is a parishioner at our lady of Guadalupe Church in Colorado Springs and she is still performing throughout Colorado. In 1987, she was invited to perform in new Mexico state fair. Laverne macs Wilaby residing in Colorado Springs was 1979 Queen. Velma Santisteven Navarro reigned As the 1980 Queen and she is still an Active entertainer for the Parish festivals in Pueblo. Michelle Hernandez Labato. Residing in Colorado Springs was the 1981 fiesta Queen an former parishioner of holy family Church in Pueblo. Kelly Mendez 1962 Queen and former parishioner of St. Anne in Pueblo now resides in Lakewood co. Jacquline Sanchez of Alamosa co. Was the 1983 fiesta Queen and is now a prominent business woman. Renee j. Martinez was crowned 1984 fiesta Queen out of 20 contestants the largest count of girls to compete in the pageants now shares her dancing talents with the youth of Pueblo. Adele Duran who now resides in California was reigning Queen in 1985. Evany Trujillo of Pueblo was fiesta Queen of 1986 and she turned Over the reign to Catalina Trujillo at the 20th annual coordination Ball. Catalina Trujillo will reign until May 1988. All of the former fiesta Queens will be recognized this year at the 20th annual fiesta Day Parade at the 1987 Colorado state fair fiesta Day Parade marshalls on september 6,1987 at 10 00 .
