Five others testified before the panel including congresswoman Patricia Schroeder of Colorado and John West of the California department of transportation. She said the Philipsburg Clearfield area has the resources to be an Independent Community and contribute to the nation s Energy needs but that timing is crucial. Up a gasoline Tanker truck unloading at a fuel tank storage facility in suburban Riverside exploded in a violent fireball wednesday spewing liquid fire in All directions and forcing nearly 600 persons to leave their Homes. Dense Black smoke from the explosion visible Miles away billowed hundreds of feet into the air As firefighters worked throughout wednesday evening to prevent the flames from touching off the fuel stored in 22,000-gallon tanks at Purvis Brothers Pennzoil distributorship. Those tanks had smoke and flames coming out of their vents. If they exploded they would have taken this Community and everything around it with it said one Riverside fire official. Authorities fearing the flames and intense heat from the 3 30 . Explosion would Lead to a Chain reaction among the volatile fuel storage tanks evacuated a four Block area of the residential neighbourhoods surrounding the storage facility. An estimated 550 persons were removed from their Homes to churches and Public buildings outside the danger area. At least 18 persons including 17 firemen and a television cameraman were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of heat exhaustion smoke inhalation and Burns related to the fire. All were released. Nineteen other persons were treated at the scene for minor injuries. Riverside fire chief James mock estimated damages Between $70,000 to $80,000. Firefighters trying to keep the storage tanks Cool kept hoses trained on the tanks As the fire engulfing the Tanker truck raged for about two hours. Using foam authorities brought the fire under control by 6 . And extinguished it by 10 ., when they began transferring the remaining fuel in the truck into another Tanker. Smoke was going up from that truck higher than the Hill behind it said Ken Daniels a radio dispatcher with the Riverside fire department. It looked like an atomic firefighters kept a Vigil at the storage facility throughout the night in the event the fire would re ignite. Residents were allowed p return to their Homes before Midnight but authorities said Many of those living closest to the facility elected to remain away until morning. The explosion occurred As the Driver of the Tanker truck began transferring the gasoline into one of the storage tanks police said. The Driver who had turned away and was walking toward a nearby office when the truck exploded moments later apparently escaped injury said authorities. " state fire marshal Carl Metz was at the scene late wednesday an investigation into the cause of the explosion was continuing. The Pennsylvania hazardous materials Board was assisting in the investigation and the cleanup. Heat from the explosion.
