seasoned Podolak left is a 61 182 Pound Sophomore from at lactic while Chuck Roland right is a 62 188 Pound Junior from Des Miries photo by Ken Kephart conf from Page 7 season the spirit and morale of the squad has been surprisingly High the team though Lack ing in depth and experience seems eager to prove itself and will get its first Chance a week from saturday when it will Host the University of Arizona in the sch ools earliest Home opener in history unlike last Yea steam that was picked by play boy and several other magazines and new whats your excuse the common sick Hulics Best Friend yes Hes 3 sick Man but not with a cold no germ could last in a system saturated with Alco hol when you sober up youll feel so healthy friends wih avoid you maybe you need new fronds citizens committee on alcoholism 504 guaranty Bank building 3662431 papers to rank High in the nation this years team has no such pressure the Hawks being picked by Many to Fin ish last in the big 10 have nothing to lose and everything to gain and with a new coach Ray Nagel and staff last years dismal 19 performance has been for gotten and the team is ready to Start anew we look to 1966 As the year of the big Challenge for the coaching staff an the players says this will be a relatively inexperienced team and not a big one physically but the squad had great spirit and we expect to be Able to Spring a few surprises the Hawks have 24 Letterman returning from last years squad but that a Little mis leading when you con Sider that Only 11 of those saw much game experience a season ago Low a originally was to have 26 returning but two have quit Phil Schooley the no 3 quarterback on last years squad announced his in Tention this summer to Transfer to state Coll Ege of Iowa and senior end Rich Ohara from Maquoketa quit the team after two Days of prac Tice this fall i would have to say this is one of the Gree Ner teams Ive had says Nagel but there eager to get out there and win and i like that according to Nagel the teams greatest draw Back is its Lack of depth particularly in the offensive line where in jury has cast a Shadow of doubt on the teams Success Nagels biggest con Cern at the moment is right guard Terry Huff a Junior from Daven port who suffered a re Currence of a shoulder injury during the Sec Ond Day of practice and May be out for the season another worry is Roger Lamont a 61 231 Pound senior tackle from Chicago who was struck by a truck while working on a construction Job this summer Lamont suffered badly strained knee ligaments in the Accident and is still not fully recovered the loss of Ohara also came As a severe blow to the team but Nagel feels he has an Excell ent replacement for Ohara in Gary Larsen a Junior from Detroit who was the no 2 Fla Kerback behind Karl Noonan last season Larsen has impressed me Nagel says i didst get a look at him during Spring practice because he w out with mononucleosis arid was inf really counting on him but he has looked very Good in practice so far and now in not sure he wont turn out to be just As Good Sohara was As the teams Strong Point Nagel Points to his offensive Backfield which should provide plenty of fireworks if the offensive linemen can stay healthy Nagel Calls the quarterback position his strongest position on the team there he has two untried underclassmen who have been doing an excellent Job so far and who could provide the spark the Hawks need to have a successful season the Quarter backs Are Chuck Roland a 62 192 Pound Junior from Des Moines and de Podolak a 61 Pound Sophomore from
