Klien and Schmidt were suspended for alleged violation of rules 23 and 34 of fire department regulations which forbid pub Lac statements by Mem Bers of the department that have not been cleared with the fire chief. The suspensions came late wednesday following circulation of a news re lease to local Media by local 11 concerning Union Askings which the fire fighters v charged were being ignored by safety commissioner Frank Bosh and the Cedar rapids City Council. The news release cited actions taken by the local in regard to pay hike requests in june of this year and action taken by the Public safety depart ment and individual councilmen. On june 24, 1964 our Askings were pres enter to the City " Council City clerk personnel direct or and the chief of the fire department in letter form. On june 25, these letters were returned with the exceptions of those sent to the personnel director and the chief of the fire department along with a letter of refusal signed by commissioner the re lease stated. The release also blasted Bosh and the City Council for allegedly failing to negotiate with the bar gaining committee of the local. The negotiating committee of local 11 has been completely ignored in their attempts to negotiate with the commissioner of Public safety and the City Council on wages and fringe benefits for the com ing the release charged. The fire fighter s re lease also spelled out the position adopted by Cedar rapids firemen following a special meeting held to determine the course of action to be pursued. As outlined in the re lease the Union passed resolutions to retain be Gal counsel to voice opposition to the proposed budget of the department of Public safety in particular those parts of the budget relating to the fire service. The Union said that fire department representation will appear at the City budget hearings on August 12 to voice their opposition unless their demands had been met by the release signed by the executive Board of local 11, added that the decision to Rel us in formation to local news Media in violation o f fire was made following instruction by a vote of an overwhelm ing majority of All Mem Schmidt and Klien were both Given 90 Day sus pensions by firs chief Hinter following appearance of the news release wednesday
