Cincinnati Israelite (Newspaper) - August 8, 1862, Cincinnati, Ohio A 4t h a i is r a . A re a a a % 1 is Ltd a a a a As written expo ally for Tho i Raelou a St. Louis july 25, 1862. Editor of the israelite much As i should have desired to see an Abler pen engaged in opening a correspondence on religious topics with your valued the continued silence and seeming apathy of your occasional correspondents Here encourage me to Send you this letter. Being a resident of St. Louis for the last six years and in constant relation with some of the most prominent hebrew citizens i feel confident of being Able to give you a Correct sketch of in this Community. Should my letter prove acceptable to Yot p0-0011 will be followed in due course by a second As likewise by a communication for your German paper Deborah. I need hardly mention that the israelite population of St. Louis is divided into two congregations of which the older the 11 United hebrew congregation a built 3 a years ago a Fine Temple fitted Tnp in costly style and provided Well for the bodily Comfort of its members whether As much can be said for their spiritual Comfort and welfare i can not assert As no permanent preacher of the word of god has been engaged for some years. My remarks will therefore exclusively apply to the younger and working congregation 11 Bani Elk of which the key. Henry Kuttner has been resident minister for the last 5 years. In giving Praise to the several gentlemen who have been mainly instrumental in raising this congregation to its present prosperous condition simply do Justice to their untiring Zeal in promoting the spiritual welfare of their co religionists. The state of affairs 3 years a when you or. Editor visited our City last has greatly changed and should you revisit us you would feel surprised at what has been done in this comparatively Short lapse of time. The Lack of interest in religious matters which was then Manifest to every observer has been happily succeeded by a sound healthful state of religious activity. Peace and Harmony reign instead of distrust and enmity All members of the congregation vie with each other to co operate in Happy and cordial Union with the preacher and officers of the society. Hard and prolonged has been the combat fought against prejudice yet after All a Complete Victory Lias been gained and Atli rejoice at the present Happy aspect of affairs. During my six years residence Here four presidents have been elected by the a a Bani Al 99 congregation and filled the official chair. Under the administration of the first president b. Singer esq., the Temple was built a commodious Structure but inadequate to the present wants of the Community. L. R. Strauss esq., the succeeding chief officer established the school of religion to likewise deserves great credit for his discriminate judgment in engaging our efficient minister the Rev. H. Kuttner. M. Friede esq., third president improved on the work of Hie predecessors by supplying the Temple with a Fine Organ and introducing a regular service in the Temple. Isidore Bush esq., has filled under succeeding presidents the important office of Secretary in which position he has been Ever Active by word and deed to further the Good work in which All have been engaged. Press of business has compelled or. Bush to resign much to the regret of the congregation. The fourth and present president f. Dattelzweig esq., elected 9 months ago is an enlightened Man favourable to reforms and always ready to perform the often onerous duties of his office in the most conscientious Way. The former pecuniary embarrassments of the congregation have been overcome by or. Dattelzweig and a full Treasury abundantly shows his judicious and a ministration. G. S. Ensel esq., the efficient Leader of the choir has shown great disinterestedness in supplying the Organ and choir with appropriate music. Being himself an accomplished performer on several instruments and in Possession of a. Fine voice lie has been mainly instrumental in bringing the choir to it present High proficiency. Or. N. Falk the newly elected Secretary is a Young Man of Faith and Energy Well qualified to fill the office. Last but not least i have to mention the name of or. Friedman formerly of Albany n. Y., and As i believe Well known to you or. Editor. Director under All presidents or. Friedman Bas repeatedly acted As assistant Hazan on new year and other feast Days always modest and retiring forgetting his own sell in trying to promote the interest of the whole. It gives to great pleasure to find this Opportunity of noticing the deserts of or. Fried Man and to thank him sincerely for All he. Has done. At the risk of incurring your displeasure for trespassing on your valuable space i can not conclude my epistle without expressing my Surprise that notwithstanding the Rev. Henry Kuttner Bas already held his third confirmation City nobody should have Ever sent Yon a report of these a a a proceedings or noticed the services of this beloved divine the True Good Shepherd of his flock instructor of the Youthful Friend and adviser of the Middle aged consoler and sympathizer with the aged and infirm. Highly esteemed and beloved As. Or Kerr. Ner is by All i feel confident that in paying this just tribute to his Worth and efficiency i do but express the feelings of every member of his congregation and All will unite with me in praying that he May Long continue to preach the word of god to his present hearers. 1 the confirmation of several children on the last feast of weeks was the occasion of great festivities among the congregation a a a under the auspices of or. Dattelzweig the president two Floral artists had been engaged to decorate the Temple in truly. Magnificent style and Only one opinion prevail a cd in approbation of the splendor Beata to and fitness of All arrangements. A among the children Julius Strauss son of the former president showed great proficiency in hebrew and for one so Young extensive knowledge of the word of god. His reverend instructor seems evidently to have taken great pains to obliterate part of his obligations to the father who brought him to us by giving his son the full Benefit of his vast learning. After conclusion of the service at the House of god or. Strauss entertained his friends at his residence where the enjoyment of All the Good things provided kept them captive until a late hour. May Young Strauss realize the expectations of his fond parents and teacher and become a useful member of societ3r. Whether a Public presentation of some article of plate to the Rev Henry Kuttner is in contemplation i can not say private presents i am confident can not have failed the reverend gentleman who two years ago was Tho recipient of a Finesilver Gilt Tankard. Lam or. Editor very respectfully r. Danville pa., july 31, 1862. Editor of the israelite. My attention was called by a Friend to the following article in the Boston investigator of july 23 a a jewish sunday the new York examiner says 4 it is probably not generally known that within the year past three or four sunday schools have been started by jewish synagogues in this City. It is to be particularly noted that the sessions Are held on the Christian or. Pardee Well known by his connection with the new York sunday school Union stated recently in his address in Brooklyn that he had just come from the Celebration of the first anniversary of the jewish sunday school association held that Day. He had been quite minutely consulted by the rabbis interested in the movement to get the Benefit of Bis experience which he gave of course joyfully. 44 or. Pardee also stated that among a number of prizes Given on this occasion to meritorious pupils was a Bible containing both the old and the new testaments in what this Means or what it will Lead to it is difficult to say. Of course the intelligent admission of the new testament into the education of the jews strikes directly at the distinctive Faith of that sect i 9 a will you please inform us whether those Are the facts and make your comments on the subject. With the highest regards i remain your most obedient servant e. Oppenheim. Editor s have no knowledge of this beyond what is reported in the israelite. We can not see the difference whether a class to instructed on saturday or sunday. Bibles containing also the new testament will do harm to no jewish child. The jew Only need read the gospel Story to discredit it. We knew it by heart when a boy therefore we do not believe in it from conviction of or. So and so thinks this will bring the jew one step nearer to christianity he is mistaken. A a the jews in the roman states. N the following is extracted and translated from an italian newspaper by or. David. 6on Romish toleration. If the offences against god Are in the estimation of the Church the least deserving of Pardon every one who,.at least in name a if not Catholic in the sight of is a reprobate. 15 of such reprobates there exists a great number. Balbi counts 600r 000,000 of them upon the surface of the Earth. The Pope though he damns them ail does not now collect armies As he was wont to do in order to make War against them Here below. There is More than this the head of the Church is seen daily to treat in Tho friendliest manner the enemies of his religion a he accepts the presents. Of a l Mussulman a a a a a a a a a a a a. Prince. Re Eye like. A kind father Empress is pressing for a colloquy with a it Ajo has thrown off catholicism in order. To Maryja protestant treats with much regard the gentlemen of a the Nev Jerusalem a his Rtia Xor doing Quot to meet a 3 Ong schismatic Al Prince who of crap Els incognito. I doubt whether Pope Hilde a Brand would have approved of such tolerance nor can i conceive How it is viewed Iii Paradise by the Foster ers of the crusades and the instigators of St. Barthelery. And for myself i can indeed bestow my Praise upon it if it really proceeds from a Prog a Ress of Light and the etiquette of established custom but i loathe it As a political calculation and interested speculation. But who can penetrate into the intimate thoughts of the High pontiff by what Way shall at his mind in order to catch the Mother idea of ins toleration interested Savity arid natural Savity Are similar in effect but dissimilar in motive. When Pope cardinals Caress Rothschild shall we infer from it that in their sight As in. Our own a hebrew is As Good As a Catholic or that they mask their sentiments because or. Rothschild possesses precious millions. Liis delicate problem however is not too abstruse to be solved. Let us search in Rome for a jew without millions a and ask him what the estimate is in which he is held by the Popes and if the government does not make a difference Between him and the Catholic then shall i the Popes have become tolerant. But if the government looks upon the poor jew As the intermediate link Between dog then the courtesies shown to Rothschild Are the effect of the Rule of three. Let now the following facts be attended to. There were jews in Italy before there were even christians in the world. Roman polytheism which tolerated All made also room for the god of Israel. Then came the christians and were also tolerated till the Day when they conspired against the Laws Anil were often confounded with the jews because they had come from the same Quarter of the East. Christendom became Gigantic by Means of holy conspiracies it enlisted slaves attacked the rulers and became master in its turn. I do not reproach it for having destroyed pagans in did it by Way of but in Good Justice it killed too1 Many jews. But not in Rome the Popes preserved a remnant of the cursed race in order to Lead them before god at the final judgment the scriptures bad promised the jews that they should drag along Alife to the end of time the Church takes care to preserve them alive and poor. She made for them an enclosure As we have it in the zoological gardens for curious animals and 6he first placed them in the Valley of Egeria then in Trastevere and finally in the ghetto a Thev were allowed to go about in the City to show the christians How disgust Ful and degraded a Man is when he is Nota Christian but when the night came the Gates were locked. Their enclosure was barred up at the hour when the faithful went to enjoy themselves in the theater. On certain solemnities the municipal Council of Rome afforded the people a spectre. A race was run by jews horses were afterwards substituted when modern philosophy had somewhat softened Down the ferocity of customs. Every year the senator of the City presented them with a kick in lha Back by Way of favor in Exchange for which they gave him 4000 lire. On every accession to the throne they bad to put themselves in array under the Arch of Titus to offer a Bible to . They Hail to the expense of a preacher who was appointed to convert them and had to a Fine when they neglected attending him. The Law considered them As travellers in an inn and their permission of sojourn was made provisional and for centuries it had annually to be renewed. No political rights not the least civil rights was granted them. They could neither manufacture goods possess nor cultivate land they lived by Patching and bartering. The Only Marvel is that they have not become extinct to a the misery the rottenness and the stench of their hovels impoverished their bloody macerated their faces and distorted their features. Some lost their human figure and they might have been mistaken for animals were it not known that they Are intelligent Apt for business kind husbands affectionate in their families temperate and benevolent. It. Need hardly be added that the roman rabble instigated by the Eufr Fri order of the brotherhoo bantered and robbed the Law forbade christians to enter into discussion with them but it was lawful sport to strip them of anything. The Law did Bot permit to kill them but the tribunals made difference Between murder of a Man and murder of a jew a there May be seen from the following citation a a. 41 gentlemen whence comes it that the Law punishes homicide so severely even to the taking of life it is thus by killing a Christian both body and soul Are killed.1? there is sent before the supreme judge a being badly prepared who has not at All cleared himself of the sins he had committed who has not received absolution. And who drops Down insensibly into hell or at least into Purgatory. Here is the reason i say Why the killing of a Christian can never be sufficiently punished. But we whom have we killed none other than a miserable jew already damned who if be had a bundred years time for Bis conversion Eye know the obstinacy of that cursed race a would have died like an ass without confession. I do not deny that we have shortened by a few years the due execution of divine judgment we have hurried him to that eternity of pain which Ber could not escape either before Crafter. But. Be lenient gentlemen on Quot the occasion of a venial fault and Reserve your severity for those who strike at the salvation and life of a Christian.?. A a this was the absurd reasoning at Paris this the cruel logic at Roma. The. Criminal was let off with a a fear. Months imprisonment. . It May be asked Rhy did the Neyva pot flee from that sad Vale of filfch2 wretched beings. They were Horn there. Add to this fact the smallness of taxation the tri filing amount of rent and also the disdainful Chrity of ,wha. In times of inundation or Scarcity threw a a Bop at them to gnaw. And,.beside,.traveling was very expensive passport were required All Over the Earth. But ,.by Miracle of Industry one of those wretched pre Atrev bad accumulated a Little Gold the first thought was to flee with his away from the ghetto. r having packed together the Little riches be ran away to inhale a better air land less Catholic. Fontina reason when Pius in came to the throne the ghetto was found in As wretched state As in Tho most unhappy Days of the Middle Ages. -7 history has written in Golden characters All the benevolent actions of the reigning Pope and particularly the emancipation of the jews. Pius in has pulled Down the Gates of the ghetto and has Given them Liberty to walk about the. City Day and night and to reside where it suits them they. Are exempt from the official kick and its Price of 4000 lire the is cloned in which they were Catechi Zed every Sabbath at their own expense. It May thus be said that his accession to the throne has been the Era of the poor jews liberation. Europe which sees at a distance must suppose that under such a tolerant reign All the jews Are gone to reside in the states of the Church in order to enjoy the gentleness of Pius in. But statistics Are the safest guides Invar Adox ies. In 1842, under Gregory Xvi in. The Complete babylonian Captivity the Little pontifical kingdom contained a 12,700 jews and in 1853, after so benefits and reforms notwithstanding the Justice and toleration the hebrew population is reduced to 9237 souls in what manner did 3463 jews withdraw from the paternal claim of the holy father ? it must either be said that this people is the very Type of ingratitude there is foul play at the Bottom of it All. When i was at Rome i tried to Clear up the matter to my own mind and i put myself in communication with two respectable individuals of the ghetto. But As soon a they had Learned the motive that had induced me to meddle with their affairs the poor men quite terrified replied a do not bewail us take care you do not make it Public that we Are wretched that regrets the benefits granted us in 1847 the ghetto is barred up with invisible but insuperable Gates and now our condition has grown worse than Ever. All that you might say in our favor would fall Back upon us and your Good intentions might turn out to our these Are the hints i received about that persecuted people they Are few but comprehensive. I visited the ghetto in which a secret Power keeps them shut up As much As Ever and i saw the most horrible Tho most neglected Quarter of the City whence i concluded that for them. I ascertained that neither Pope cardinals Bishops nor any of the inferior prelates can put their foot upon that cursed ground without contracting moral defilement As the roman usage will have it. It reminded me of the paria in thae Asfe indies whom no Brahman can touch with his Little Finger without losing caste. Fur ther ascertained that the jew is. No More admissible to any office whatever than. A. Animal. For a son of Israel to ask for the office of a broker in Rome would be As ridiculous As for the Giraffe of the zoological Gardena to ask for the office of a sub prefect. No jew is proprietor there nor can he become such and these data afforded me the full persuasion that Pius in does not As yet regard them As. Human beings. If one does cultivate land he must do it Nuder a false name As if the sweat of a jew disgraced the soil it. Manufacturing occupation is now As much prohibited them ask Oyer lest they should injure the National Industry themselves not belonging to the nation in Fine they have not at All of an emancipated people the Mark of the pontifical reprobation. Is not yet defaced from their forehead. If As history pretends they had obtained their Liberty these twelve years it would at least in some Little measure show itself in their of sags. A Quot i verily believe that Pius in in the beginning of his reign was animated by a generous spirit but we Are in a country where the Good required enormous exertions while the evil slips Down like a Oyster. Like a loaded cart to be drawn up a Steep Declivity can hardly be moved by four oxen but slides Back of itself without any help. A / a a a. Of All were counted up that Rothschild has done for his co religionists Chrome people would be surprised. He not Only assisted them. From his own Means but not one negotiation did he conclude with in which he did not Annex one or two secret articles in their favor. But the cart does always slide Back again. The French occupation might have turned out not a Little to the advantage of the jews for there is no want of Good will in our officials but that of Quot the priests very much More powerful and wicked is the obstacle in. The Way.?T. I May reintroduce an anecdote perfectly suitable to 7 the subject showing the straggle of the twofold influence. A a a a jew at Rome in spite of the Law had applied himself to cultivate land a Christian to save appearance protected him with his name. But the neighbors knew. That the crop was the property of the jew and every one took As much As he could with impunity. Everything was nearly devastated and the Field in perfect disorder. Quot the poor Farmer who on the first of August found himself already in a state of desolation begged that a sworn guard migh Che conceded him for the Protection of Bra farm. A but the authorities answered that they would never arow. A Christian
