A Lively Celebration shoot la affray Between Dayton bloods and Cincinnati a Amblen. One of the latest features of the Celebration of the fourth was a Lively shooting match that luckily did not result very seriously out at a Abha Dye so a Little after Midnight yesterday morning. A couple of Dayton gentlemen sons of Wealtny citizens of that place who had come to Cincinnati to spend the Day had taken two Back loads of fast women out to that resort and in company with a to updo of Cincinnati friends bad just gotten through with the pleasures of a Oha Dupagne supper when a Hack bearing three Cincinnati sports and the performers upon a Barp and a violin drove up. The a a thoroughbreds alighted and walked into the House where they were warmly welcomed by the girls to the great disgust of at least one of their companions one of the Dayton men. One of the gamblers recognizing the females As acquaintances he modestly proposed to bring in the a a band and have a Danoe. He was on the Point of going out to do this when the irate Dayton Ian evidently jealous of his winning style and advantages in the Possession of a band knocked him Down with a blow on his nose. So soon As he could pick himself up and put his handkerchief to his bleeding smeller the Dayton Ian pulled his pistol. A Small pocket affair shooting four pills and rapidly shot at him giving him one flesh wound in the left Arm. The sport immediately Drew his revolver and shot several times lodging one Ball in his opponents left Side producing a slight wound and taking off a Small piece of the other Dayton Ian Scalp. While the shooting was going on out in front of the porch the women gathered around and watched it very woolly indulging in Only two or three Small screams. When the affair was Over both parties took to their Hooks and returned to the Olty. The Dayton Ian returned Home last night or were to have done so very in ooh disgusted with Belr . To the editor of the commercial the week that closes with to Day has been one of excitement Over the entire state of Mississippi. The election was generally held in the country precincts first and on last Friday and saturday in the towns and county seats so that the excitement increased As the week closed. But As there were Many soldiers at various Points All Over the state no serious outbreak occurred. In Carthage Leake county a White Man was sent to Vicksburg to be dealt with by general Mcdowell for attempting to shoot a Republican neighbor. In Canton to Day a Man was put in jail by the military for driving negroes away from the polls with his revolver. Some shooting was done at Jackson last saturday but with no very serious result. The democrats always sit at the polls and take a list of those who vote for or against their own party. They say they will publish those who vote the democratic ticket on the a Roll of Honor a while those who vote the Republican ticket Are to have their names placed on the a Roll of Many similar threats Are resorted to to prevent the negroes voting for ratification of tie new Constitution. As far As can be known at present the Constitution will be Defeated and the result will be that the state will remain for some time under the control of the military. To Morrow is the closing Day of the election and the result will then be definitely known. The republicans of Mississippi Are enthusiastic Over the Chicago nominations while the democrats arc unfriendly to Johnson done to like chases platform am will not be pleased with any one but Pendleton or Sone one of his opinions forgetting that to Medio Tuti Simns ibis. The papers say that Vallandigham is about to commence a new paper the Herald in Cincis Nati. I have no doubt that he will be More successful at that than at running for president As such a pm pm of trill suit the Southern democracy especially if he will give it the Low vulgar countenance of the la Crosse Democrat. The weather is warm and dry every body wanting rain. Crop Are generally Ppd but without rain soon the Corn crop will necessarily by Short. Bennett. Wolf off remarkable cow. Lafayette ind., july 2, 1868. To the editor of the commercial i noticed in your valuable paper some time since a communication in relation to an extra pro Leary cow owned by or. Frederick Warren of Jones station Butler county Ohio which had Given during the month of May 1,67314 pounds of a Good Rich also a notice of another cow belonging to or. Sprague , Ohio which had Given during the same period an average of fifty six quarts of milk per a Hole these Are certainly remarkable cows permit me to Call the attention of your country readers to a Heifer belonging to t. 8. Reynolds esq., living Northeast of this City. She was two years old last february and in May had commenced to give milk say about one per Day and Ghe it now airing about eight quarts per Day of Good Rich milk although she has never yet waived 8be is a handsome animal probably a Little targe for her age and of the Marham Breed. The Case has attracted considerable attention in this Vicinity in a quiet Way and several physicians and parties interested in such matters have been consulted without however arriving at any definite conclusion except that it is a most wonderful Freak of nature. If any of Zour country subscribers Oan beat this to would Fuco to boor from them Outon the a a i the presidential Campaign in the United states excites the liveliest interest of the european journals. Most of them Are very much gratified at the results of the Chicago convention. The Berlin National Gazette says a the bearing the proceedings and the results of this convention were worthy of the great party of intelligence Liberty Aud Progress Whoso representatives constituted it. It is sometimes rather risky to venture upon predictions regarding political developments in the United states hut we deem it perfectly Safe to predict that the Chicago convention nominated the future president and vice president of the United states. That Grants administration will remove Tho stains which that of Andrew Johnson has brought upon the Escutcheon of the United states can not to doubted for a moment. The platform adopted Art Chicago can not but meet the approval of All Liberal minded men both in America and Tho Kreuz Zeitung of the same City is disgusted with the convention a to read the report of the proceedings of the Chicago convention has been a rather arduous and decidedly disagreeable task. In order that no Ono might have any misunderstanding As to its character the convention allowed itself to be presided Over by or. Notoriety Hunter Schurz who made a Lach Remose speech on taking the chair and when he had afterwards to give Way to another chairman took Good care not to let the convention forget that he Schurz was there. After much confusion noise and wrangling general Grant about whose military capacity competent critics entertain serious doubts was nominated for president and the present speaker of the House of representatives at Washington or. Colfax said to be an adroit demagogue in the United states received the nomination for vice president. A declaration of principles clearly foreshadowing further acts of Radical and revolutionary violence and boasting of the questionable achievements of the Radical party was adopted. The conservative journals scout the idea that this ticket could be the italian Diritto hails the nomination of general Grant with great enthusiasm 4, Grant we knew beforehand that he would be the Standard bearer of Tho Republican party in the United states and that his nomination was a foregone conclusion but now that it has been made we can not forbear expressing our Joy and enthusiasm at the event. In him the United states will have a ruler who will make them As illustrious in peace As he has made them illustrious in War. Modest hut of Sterling Worth not Brilliant but endowed with a Clear solid understanding Cool healt fed persevering scrupulously faithful in carrying out the tasks entrusted to him undaunted amid appalling dangers a Man of the people and sympathizing not Only with the masses of his own country but with the Liberty Loving people of All countries he is the very Man that should he placed at the head of the great Republic. Surely if the american people should defeat this eau did the at the polls in november and bestow its Suffrages on the tool which the reactionary party May present to it then it will show itself less worthy of the admiration of foreign nations than it has hitherto been generally considered to the Paris pays does not share in this Grant enthusiasm of its italian of temporary. Forgetful of the fact a that it styles itself a journal de la Empire a it says a we hear with pleasure that the nomination of general Grant has been received with great coldness by the american people. It manifests its common sense by the reluctance which it exhibits to entrust its destinies to the hands of a Man who has nothing else to recommend him than his sword. Is that sword of his a sufficient guarantee that he possesses any ability As a ruler and administrator the american people it is evident Are tired of War soldiers and All that sort of thing hence it is almost mathematically certain that general Grant will he Defeated. We should consider his election one of the direst calamities that Ever befell the United the Hamburg news says a those hundreds of thousands who take the liveliest interest in the Fiol tical affairs of the United states not Only for general reasons but because they Are financially interested in the Fate of that country will have received with very decided gratification the result of the Chi Cago convention. For the past six months the most sinister rumours have been current in Europe in reference to the desire said to prevail in the ranks of the american people to repudiate its National debt. The political Creed adopted by the Chicago convention and the character of its illustrious candidate for the presidency Are both Well calculated to disprove these rumours. The financial portion of the Chicago platform is generally looked upon As honest dignified and trustworthy and general Grant is too much a Man of Honor Justice and integrity to link his stainless name with the infamy of repudiation. But what if Grant should not be elected we do not admit the possibility of that event. Was Washington Defeated at the first presidential election was not Jackson honoured and re Vered by the american people As it Seldom admired its noblest Public men general Scott it is True was Defeated but there were in Scott a character certain peculiarities which were utterly repugnant to the popular heart. Grant on the contrary is just such a Man As the Masse s like and love. We think that All calculations based on the supposition of his defeat Are doomed to grievous the Copenhagen Dag bladet save a the United states have for some time past engrossed the attention of us europeans so much that it is proper for us to keep our readers Well informed of every thing important and interesting going on in that country. At this very juncture the political aspect of North America is decidedly interesting. The quadrennial term of the presidential election is drawing nigh. The two great parties of Tho country the republicans who have been in Power since i860, and who embrace the better classes of the native and foreign born population and the democrats oddly so called although at Bottom they Are conservatives and revolutionists and embrace the debris of the old pro Elavery aristocrats and the most ignorant portion of the natives and naturalized foreigners Are fighting for the great prize with All the Energy and impetuosity of heated partisans. General Grant the conqueror of the rebels is the candidate of the former who will be the candidate of the latter is As yet Uncer Tain. If Grant is elected the results of the War May be considered definitely settled but if his democratic opponent should succeed in defeating him then the great Book of the War May be reopened and a great Deal of what was thought to have been accomplished undone. There is not much probability however that the democrats will e successful. They Are regular bourbons learning Nof Liing forgetting nothing Aud the american people have too often scorned their offers to accept theml now. Looking at the contest from our Distant stand Point we must confess that we can not see any reason whatever Why an intelligent american should wish the Success of the democratic candidate. The French seem not to be very desirous of the restoration of their bourbons Why should the americans Long for the restoration of theirs a a new Catholic Council. The Bull of his holiness Pius in calling an ecumenical or general Council of the Catholic Church to meet at the Vatican in december the 8th of next year is an event of great interest to the entire Christian world As Well As of great significance to catholicism. No such Council has met since the famous Council of Trent. The grand assemblages of last year and of 1854, were conferences merely. The Pope stood alone in them As the Mouth of the Church the Bishops were advisers merely. In a general Council the body of Bishops of whom there Are eight Hundred becomes the Mouth of the Church and its decisions in matters of Faith Are held to be divinely inspired Aud infallible and binding on even the Pope As Well As the Church. The Pope is hut one member of a general Council though highest among his Brethren the humblest Bishop shares with him at that time the supreme dignity of receiving divine inspiration and uttering the infallible word of truth. A general Council is a Congress of the Catholic Church called by the head of this Church and presided Over by him or has Legates and whatever it decrees is the decree of god to almost two thirds of the Christian world. There Are held to have been Nineteen general councils. The meeting of the apostles at Jerusalem in the year 50 of our Era was the first of these. The eight following were called by Christian emperors Between 325 and and 869 a. The Popes have since called ten Between 1123 a. And 1545 a. D., the Date of the Council of Trent three h undred and Twenty four years will have elapsed Between the last general Council and the one now summoned. The Catholic Church has never before by seventy years been so Long without a general Council. In tie deepest darkness of the Ages of barbarism the inspired voice of Tho whole Church assembled in Council was not heard for two Hundred and fifty four years. From that time the twelfth Century had three councils the thirteenth three the fourteenth one the fifteenth two and the sixteenth one. The seventeenth and eighteenth Century had none and More than half of the nineteenth will be gone before the Long silence is broken. Since the Century of the reformation Rome has not spoken by a general Council. 8be endeavoured at Trent to Deal with the problems of the great overturning and from that hour her infallible head has not until now thought Good to evoke again tie reserved authority of the Catholic Church. Protestantism has ran its career to the end in the opinion at least both of catholics and rational Ista before catholicism has chosen to raise its voice a second time. Freedom of thought and of religion have spread throughout Christendom tin off the daring Monk Luther protested Tor the right of conscience against both Pope and emperor and the Mystic awful voice of Catholic infallibility has not once for three Hundred and Twenty four years attempted to forbid. When the silence of More than three centuries shall to broken Christendom Wolbe alive a Vith curiosity at least to hear what catholicism has now to say. Pius the ninth is an old Man of seventy six years a Man of piety hut not without vanity and by no moans discreet. He came to the papal throne june 16,1846, and has been Pope therefore for Twenty two years. It is a roman idea that a Pope will never reign More than Twenty five years. Possibly his holiness feels that the time is Short in which to make his reign memorable and that but one expedient is now possible to him that of calling a general Council. The first step by which Pius the ninth sought to achieve something worthy of his position was the policy of Liberal Reform which lie seemed a Dontly pursuing previous to the revolution of 1848, which drove him from Romo and set up a Republic. Upon his restoration to ceased to favor Reform. Lie turned his Eye to aggrandizing Trio Catholic Church and began with a Brief restoring the Hierarchy of the Church in England. In 1854, he invited Bishops from All parts of Christendom to meet him at Rome Aud with their consent made a declaration of the Dogma of the immaculate Conception. In 1851,1854 and 18g5, respectively he concluded concordat with Spain. Baden and Austria. Last year Lio called together a grand assemblage of Catholic Bishops at Rome for the canonization of certain japanese martyrs. In that assemblage was disclosed a fact surprising to even the papal government that the Bishops of the Church generally Are extremely roman in their principles and feelings not Only willing but desirous to show their entire subordination to the Quot Pope. More than two thirds of the Bishops received their Benefices from Pius in. The times Are critical in the extreme for catholicism. Not Only is the temporal Power falling and every Sovereign in Europe save the notorious Queen of Spain hostile to the papacy but the dread spirit of Freedom is put a Meating the Church itself. Libri pen Satori or free thinkers Are organized within the Church under the very nose of his holiness. A few years since 1 it eral catholicism rallied in a Catholic Congress under the presidency of that eminent scholar he theologian or. Dollinger until a papal Bri a forbade the daring innovation. American of. Ioli cism though spreading rapidly is so americ Tizedas hardly to Bear at All the True Eccles tical stamp. The ecclesiastical lords of the a lurch therefore look with alarm to the future and turn anxiously to the throne of their co a Union and to that authority by which the Fly can provide that the voice of god shall be edible among men. The eni ability of the Woi co Respol it May no ish Channel Tunnel Kenai submarine Tunnel Cost Olince of the Washington chronicle get uninteresting to your readers to have a few particulars about Tho projects for connecting England with the continent by some method or other More convenient than that of navigation. I will omit the systems of employing balloons but direct my attention at once to the plan of building a Railroad Bridge or series of Bridges which appears thus far to be the most popular for having the advantage of open air Aud Daylight As compared with submarine tunnels. There is a prejudice against tunnels even on Ordinary railways and it would probably be some time a fore travellers would look with Cornel Anceney on the line Between Dover and Calais. But the Tunnel is in All probability really practicable whereas no such Assurance exists respecting the Bridge. The number of artificial islands or foundations at certain distances in the Channel Between coast and coast to be connected by Means of Bridges offer a rather doubtful guarantee As to the durability of Jho work. Or. Boutet a French Engineer has lately come to England with a View of examining the feasibility of such an Enterprise. Another plan Lias been formed of building a railway contained in an Iron tube resting on the bed of to lift sea but Neitli Enot these plans receives As much attention As a submarine Tunnel. Investigations about the depth of the Channel Hava proved that no obstacle is presented on that score the Channel being a shallow sea. Evidence has likewise been obtained of the fact that the soil Over which the sea flows is White Clolk Gray Chalk and Green Sand further below. This fact was ascertained by brings on the English and French coasts. The two Points on each Side of the Channel being not More than Twenty Miles from each other it is but reasonable to up Proso that the same material will form the submarine soil from coast to coast and tunnelling through Chalk is a work of no difficulty whatever nor would there be any trouble in so depressing the Tunnel Assoc Arr it through the Gray cd la which is less permeable to wafer the.
