Cincinnati Commercial (Newspaper) - December 14, 1872, Cincinnati, OhioA pm Imam re a 8the Cincinnati commercial saturday december 14. 187-2. Kobe s third concert. Nothing but a sense of his unquestionable and firmly established popularity Here notwithstanding his Brief acquaintance with our con Cert goers could have induced us to apply in print the vulgar familiarity of nomenclature common among the loungers or opera Glass brigade of the orchestral Periphery to the distinguished Rubinstein nor would a dissent from the general Praise be at All allowable if it were not that the constant tension is Likely at last to break perhaps at a critical moment and produce a discord at which popular favor might take flight. Ergo a Little dissent is a Good thing just As a Little bitters in the Matutina cocktail impart tonic and relish. The artist Laboured with his instrument and his hair last night More successfully with the former for it did what he required of it but those Bee Hovian locks persisted in falling Forward from either Side of his head like a pair of disordered tassels every time he bowed to the piano in response to the frequently repeated applause. It was perplexing but artist like. Or. Rubinstein a selections were not More popular than those of the preceding concerts but his performance exhibited the same Mastery of the instrument. His hands fell with downy soft Ness or thundered upon the keys like Cyclops hammers which Soever he willed and whether in the thunderous contrasts of Liszt or the sensuous whisperings of Chopin the theme stood out distinctly As the pattern in an exquisite embroidery. In this respect Rubinstein a Stylo recalls Thal Berg whom he excels in expression and the Fine shading of sound so difficult to impart to piano music. Like that artist too he exhibits ardor without warmth an element which distinguished Rottschalk and made him Par excellence the interpreter of Chopin. A or. Sieniawski maintained himself As the popular favorite giving a popular Little air in response to an enthusiastic Call. Mile. Liebhart did not appear owing to temporary indisposition but the gorgeous my Lle Ormenyi filled her place on the stage if not in the personal preference of the audience. She Sang the Flower song from a Faust a not As the Cary warbled it exactly but acceptably enough and took quite As much pairs to make herself agreeable. The prospectus of a boarding school at Perth contains the following announcement a in mythology the pupils will be taught All that is necessary to enable them thoroughly to understand modern operas who shall say the austrians Are not a musical people an idea of the severity of the examination for admission at the Paris conservatory of music May be seen from the fact that out of one Hundred and three female and thirty two male applicants for admission to the class in piano instruction Only thirteen of the former and eight of the latter were chosen. Of the violin class there were thirty five applicants and Only eight admitted. Within a few months past or. Leonard Harrison has had in his Possession a genuine picture by the great English Painter Turner. The authenticity of this work can not be doubted for it was purchased by or. M. D. Conway out of the noted Gillott Sale in London. But no one familiar with the Handiwork of Turner could doubt but what this rare production was the offspring of his brain and Brush for it has the evidences of his Peculiar method of handling and it has that attempt to get delicacy of tint and justness of tone which characterizes the work of Turner at this period eighteen. How Little material the subject affords for positive effect of color May be gathered from the title at the first sign the Spectator sees Only a dim Uncertain space of water and filmy sky. You have a Dan self Light Aud air which comes out from this hand breadth of Canvas but it is not until your Eye has rested upon the picture for awhile that the Mist lifts up Aud Here and there Are seen the faint forms of ships and steamers. And these whether in motion or floating with the tide Are visible in the Mist Aud upon the water they do not appear As if painted upon the Canvas but take their place in perspective with As much certainty As regards distance As Trees and houses would in a landscape upon a cloudless Day. It is this artistic perception of delicacy or tint Aud a knowledge of the gradation of color which characterize Turners Genius. It is possible that there Are to be had Many pictures by other artists which would be preferable to this and not Cost one tenth the Money. But they would not be Turners. The Pearl and Sapphire Are Beautiful and we Are pleased to Wear them but they can not take the place of the Diamond. It is Worth while to say that were this picture in one of the Eastern cities it would have been the subject of voluminous discussion. As the Winter weather has seriously set in the artists in our City have begun to work. Pictures of landscapes or portraits or figures according to the special Branch which May be pursued stand you the easels in a More or less finished state. Or. Tait free from the cares and responsibilities of the exposition exhibition at his room Corner of eighth and Vine has entered upon the legitimate and More congenial occupation of the artist. A Small landscape of 8wiss scenery very pleasant in tone and picturesquely com fat used needs but a few touches before it passes nto the Possession of its owner or. 8. Emery. Another picture representing a Waterfall in the mountains boldly painted and full of striking effects is to take its place in the Choice collection of or. W. A Groesbeck. Or. Taitus studio shows evidence of his Long and Friendly association with celebrated artists of the old world. Hanging upon the Walls or crowding the portfolios Are half finished but most suggestive sketches of Munkasey elaborately completed pictures in Oil and water color by the Achen bachs Herzog Tummel Seigert Jacobson and Many others while there Are several of those incomparable drawings in Black and White by Herzog. Or. Taitus studio is a curious and interesting place to visit. Several very pleasing and artistic Auto types have recently been produced by or. George Potter a Young Man just graduated from the Mcmeken Art school. These Auto types Are made by the artist for so he May be called by scratching out the picture on the photographic plate. The subjects Are picturesque Little bits of country scenery in the Way of Brooks farmhouses old Mills amp a. The important duties of principal of the Mcmicken Art school leave or. Noble very Little time to work at his easel. Something of this even in the Way of teaching he is obliged to do. Since the completion of his much talked of picture a forgiven a which by the Way was conceived and finished during last Summers vacation among the Hills of Kentucky or. Noble has not undertaken any important work. Upon a Small Canvas there is a partially completed picture of a Young child who is trying with an offer of a Saucer of milk to coax a Little Puppy dog whip has taken Refuge in an old overturned Hogshead. This promises to of a Moat Etui Mii picture. But or. Nobles most effective work is in the school of design. Here Are hundreds of Young men and woman Olio by Day and by night Are profiting under his unremitting conscientious attention and knowledge. ,. Grafton continues to produce those elaborate drawings which Are giving him deserved reputation. Lindsay is More than Busy with Nis landscapes which find ready purchasers. I. Webber is painting portraits beads which if seen in new York would give him wealth and Fame while or. Benson is hard at work both on figures and landscape. _ afoot in Florida. Correspondence Cincinnati commercial. St. Augustine fla., november 25, 1872. I believe when i last wrote i had just arrived at Smyrna but there is one thing i had forgotten that will add greatly to the influx of Winter tourists to this state when the route is opened As Well As exhibit a Field of tropical Luxuriance comparatively untrodden by Man. An Effort is being made to secure water communication into Lake Okeechobee in the Everglades. There is already a natural communication which with the expenditure of a few thousand dollars could to made passable for considerable sized boats. It is i believe from Lake in Winsett by a us ill Stream and Lake to Lake Soho Pekalla Lake Cypress and Kissimmee into Kissimmee River that runs southward into Lake Okeechobee thence southwestward by Way of the Catoosa Hatcher River to the Gulf. This will furnish a delightful interesting and Safe trip to tourists and if Jacksonville appreciates her own interests she will push it through As soon As possible. This will also furnish excellent amusement and an exalted moral pastime of indiscriminate Slaughter of Birds a gators and everything shoo table just suited to these compulsory pious and grave Yard looking youths and old men that yearly visit Here who can not find anything More exalting or diverting than wholesale Slaughter of innocent creatures. Whether the a Gator can be classed among innocent creatures or not i an a Zybie to say. Prejudice and a unpleasant experience May influence my judgment. Suffice it that the poor a Gator cannot take his opium anymore on the Hanks of the St. Johns without being awakened from his siesta probably on the Banks of the alligators Jordan or to the realization that it is not All of life to live especially when you have a Rifle Ball rolling around in Jour bowels. Every boat that comes up the St. Ohns expends a vast amount of ammunition and # there was a a Gator killed for every one who claims a victim St. Johp a would become a cesspool that would be a death Hole to invalids. Take your requiescat in pact poor a Gator if thou canst hut i would emigrate to some Bourne where ma.1 via is so Deuse that no traveler if he should be unfortunate As to get there Ever returns. But to return to Smyrna. This place has a celebrity and a n.m. From the efforts of doctor Turnbull an Engin Hmira who during the English Possession or this to ate endeavoured like Many other people Are doing nuyt re and fail to establish a Colony and amass a Fortune. Securing from the Mediterranean in the year 17 57, some twelve Hundred corsican and i Horican chiefly the latter he gave to this new Eldorado the name of new Smyrna building for himself a Castle or rather an embryo fortress which was at the name time a prison House for rebellious colonists. He secured that plenary Power at Home that soon made him think he was Sovereign lord Over everything and everybody until his cruel practices and exaction culminated in rebellion and flight to Augustine of Many of the colonists and he awaken done morning to find his Golden dreams had vanished like Ether before a Radiant Sun. What an ass a Little exaltation makes of some people. The Sands of time have not effaced his footprints. He has left behind him enduring Monu. Ments of his Industry. Extensive canals still remain Miles in length that Drain Rich and Fertile swamps of Many thousand acres devoted chiefly to the culture of indigo that is now found wild through All this Region. His Export from one years crop amounted to the handsome sum of 2,812, and it is my by if that it can be raised profitably now. In 1774, the London society for the encouragement of arts Aud science presented a Gold medal to or. Strachey for As Fine a say Nale of indigo from Here As that from Guiteu Uduc these swamp we a lands drained by the canal make the finest sugar Cane. But Little of the Lann is cultivated and could be purchaser cheap. Native Foreste Are growing with Pines eighteen inches in diameter and Palmetto thirty feet High where sugar Cane once Greer Ana the Row Are As distinctly visible As if planted last year. This will again produce Fine sugar and syrup and there is nothing in the world of its kind to equal the Florida syrup. The Smyrna Orange also has a great reputation and surpasses the Havana both in Richness and flavor. This place is situated on Hillsboro Inlet that runs into Halifax River. We started up the River for Daytona and passing the remains of several Coquina Rock houses we at last came to a High Bluff directly facing Mosquito Inlet upon which was standing a roofless House with perfect Walls of Coquina Rock. Here taking a seat in the wide spreading branches of a live Oak tree we enjoyed a refreshing Ocean Breeze with a Distant View of the rolling noisy turbulent surf that sings Lullaby to your restless spirit. This Coquina Rock is nothing More than comminuted Marine Shell with a sprinkling of Sand easily Cut into any desirable shape and hardening on exposure. All the old houses were built of it and judging from present appearances it made excellent building material. Coming up the River a few Miles we came to an extensive Savanna filled with Salt water lagoons. Securing the services of a Man he carried us by boat through devious windings to the opposite Side some four Miles Distant when we mounted again our pedestrian steeds. Night soon overtook us and houses like Angel visits Are beautifully and widely disseminated and when you arrive at where they ought to be they ainu to there but just two Miles or so Back from the Road and All of this is not pleasant on a dark night with the fild animals let Loose regardless of a Fellows feelings. About 9 of clock we arrived at Daytona and secured entertainment with the hospitable colonists. Wakening in the morning somewhat refreshed several friends proposed we should take a sea Bath which new and diverting experience i eagerly desired so taking a sail oat we crossed the Halifax River then the Peninsula some three fourths of a mile wide when we came to what was to me the most Beautiful sight i had yet witnessed. As far As the Eye could reach northward or southward the Ocean surf Rolls up in a matchless Resistless fury with its Low Dull heavy hypnotic moan. The Beach is very wide and one May Wade for Twenty Yards out and. Meet the creamy capped Waves As they break at his feet or going still farther meet the larger wave in a manner Only known by experience. Having prepared ourselves the bolder and More experienced marched directly out and meet the larger Waves Rode gracefully and unconcern edly through or Over them. Gaining courage i essayed to do the same thing seeing a big fellow coming i rushed farther out up he came and passed Over me through me or under me i done to know which but this i do know that suddenly something dropped and the close proximity of a Clam Shell to my sit Down added to my fright induced a degree of agility that would have astonished a professional athlete. Turning the rudder of my vessel Seaward neither stopped nor staid i but tacked for the Shore and anchored in order to determine whether my boat was completely stove in or Only partially wrecked not discovering any leakage and being assured of my seaworthiness by More experienced tars i concluded to launch again getting minute directions How to port my Helm. I started again and Rode the wave like a Jolly Sailor. If my Lan stage is not strictly nautical old tars must Par on me As my experience has been quite limited and my vessel is a Shore Craft. One can Bathe Here during the whole Winter with perfect Comfort and entertainment can to had at several places along the Halifax the most pleasant of which is or. J. A. Bostrum a. Six Miles above Daytona an intelligent swedish gentleman living on the Peninsula. Here All the comforts of a Nome can be secured. Or. Mcdonald fifteen Miles below is prepared to receive guests As Well As Lowd of Smyrna. Daytona As a Colony first had its inception in the brain of Matthias Day formerly of Mansfield Ohio but through an unfortunate combination of circumstances it passed out of his hands ceased to be a Colony and came into the Possession of Charles e. Jackson of new Jersey who now lives Here and is fitting up for himself a Home. The tract embraces two thousand seven Hundred acres fronting on the River and is pleasantly located Laid out into streets and avenues for a prospective it Day. There Are fifteen settlers Here at present with the Prospect of a considerable addition during the coming Winter. The most of the land is primitive Forest and will grow the Orange and other tropical fruits but no person is justified in breaking up a business anywhere and moving to a new country on the apse Dixit of any one but should first visit the country and see and be satisfied to make those sacrifices incident to Pioneer life anywhere. But i shall speak More of this in another letter. One objectionable feature to this part of Florida is at present its isolation and inaccessibility but efforts Are being made with every Prospect of Success to bring this Region into connection with the outer world. Leaving Daytona we came up to the jihad of Halifax River by boat and then entered Bulow Creek. I was astonished and delighted to see myriads of swallows that i had supposed went farther South to Winter. Another interesting and ubiquitous animal is found Here i Call it an animal in to Trio Annoot Moo Quito. It is stated that farther Down on Indian River they Are mistaken for snipe but then i Don t believe everything i hear they Tell some tall Mosquito stories Here but i will first inform you of Liat i know to be a fact or rather what i know about mosquitoes and leave the succeeding to your credulity. About Palatka the Mosquito Are so thick at certain seasons of the year that the people build fires in their front Yards to attract them and circling around this fire they fall and cover the ground to the depth of eight inches often putting out the fire. They Call this the Blind and no biting Mosquito but equally As pest Ferous As the other. A gentleman whose veracity i do not question told me that on the Halifax near Indian River he has often been driven from his table and been compelled to finish his dinner in bed under a net and remain there until the following morning and Tomt the window was covered so densely with them As not to admit of a Ray of Light but it is not so everywhere. Indian River is the mosquitoes Paradise. It is stated of one poor gentleman visiting there that suffering intolerably from them he sought Refuge under a old Iron sugar Kettle and was just congratulating himself on his Good Fortune when he heard them pecking away on the Subiaco. Discovering their Bills through the Kettle he kept clinching them until he had so Many fastened that they flew away with it. This looks fishy and you May believe it As Yov Ulease. A that there Are Many Points of similarity Between the human hair and bulbous vegetable productions can not be denied and As the hair establishes an Independent growth with sap vessels follicles and roots of its own it stands to reason that it can be fostered in the same Way a3 the vegetable it resembles. The Only difficulty is to know what to apply to promote its Luxuriance Force the torpid germ to vegetate and excite healthy sap secretion giving the full and natural color. This for years has puzzled the Best analytical chemists but has at length been set at rest by the discovery of Montgomery a celebrated hair restorer which is As adapted to the production of luxuriant hair the increase of those vital particles which secrete the colouring matter and also vilifying to those undeveloped hair germs which lie in the pores without growth As the phosphates and other appliances Are to the vegetable world.
