I allude to postmaster general key. Addresses were then made by Moss a. Key Devers Zevarte. This sort a miscellaneous assemblage made up republicans democrats independents made up men different sects possibly some Manv who have no sect at ally capitalists labourers it is de Snable to discuss rather those things in which we agree than those things in Winch we differ. We have occasion Dally to meet discuss our differences. Political meetings Are for that purpose. These meetings Are largely denominational sectarian but this is a gathering in which i Trust the general spirit is the desire for Harmony Foi Friendship for agreement that really is the guiding sentiment so far As purposes Are concerned this administration to brine people together who have hereto Ioie been divided. A. Voice Quot Ana hold them together la a applause i knew there were better speakers in the crowd than i am among those ideas about which we agree Are these. We agreed that this territory embraced within the United states from the tropics almost to the frigid zones from Tho Atlantic to the Pacific is hereafter indestructible one nation. La voice "1 hats again. It is a nation composed states All Winch states have equal rights a a that a right Sand it is crowded with inhabit ants different races nationalities employments Anil differences life which the states have equal rights. Now there Are three great ideas a fourth is that the National government has All within the sphere it proper constitutional rights. It is supreme All this i think we Are agreed if any Chart which any one shall attempt to Mark out the course that this administration is to take they should Malie it in accordance with All four these ideas. If we succeed in what we desire there will be shortcomings there will be Gross blunders some times there will be mistakes is no doubt Truo for the government like the people. Isenman in its origin therefore erts. The purpose is always to try to remember that while the National government is supreme while the Union is to be one forever the rights states the rights individuals Are to to equally regarded . I feel rather like going through that military evolution which is sometimes necessary marking time. It makes no Progress. Voice Quot we will do it for there Are a number things which we i think agree in address general Beatty a committee. A special Telegram to the commercial. Columbus o., August 23.?general Beatty a committee have to Day issued the following address Quot to the republicans Ohio Quot after mature deliberation we have decided that it is our duty to ask you to unite with us in the condemnation a policy Whin we solemnly believe will if sustained by tie people the North Render the late constitutional amendments valueless disfranchised eight Hundred thousand Southern voters finally endanger the liberties the whole people both North South. The most valued the principles for which the Republican party has contended is set Forth in that clause the Constitution which declares that no state shall deny to any citizen the equal Protection the Laws. By this other provisions the Constitution the nation guaranteed to the citizen Liberty Equality suffrage obligated itself to protect him in the peaceful enjoyment exercise these rights. For sixteen years the Republican party Ohio has upheld this do Orloe for this our people went to Battle to prison to death for it millions Money were expended thousands lives Sacri Floed. We Are now Alied upon to abandon it by sustaining endorsing an administration which iras deserted it. We do not propose at this time to refer detail to the Falla Cious arguments ingenious subterfuges by Winch the friends the president seek to defend Bis conduct deceive Tho people As to the disastrous Oon sequences which must eventually follow As its necessary result. We Point you to the fact that a president the chosen representative a parly whose life inspiration in every hour its existence has been political Justice Freedom for All american citizens has proved Recreant to every consideration Gratl tude humanity Honor official obligation As Well As political principle has Given the support Bis great office to deprive american citizens their sacred rights deliver them crushed humiliated into the merciless hands personal political enemies to the fact that the will the majority the voters in at least two states this Union has been disregarded the Rig Alful Appeal their governments for Protection against insurrection Domestic violence denied thus with the knowledge Oon sent the Federal administration the legally constituted authorities were thrust aside by the the offices those states seized held by its leaders to the fact that the administration has practically sons muted that the later constitutional amendments May be disregarded in the South to the Tot that the Freedom speech expression Politi Oal opinion is no longer permitted to the fact that the republicans sixteen 8tates this Union weary a struggle in Wii Leb they have had neither the sympathy nor support the administration Are compelled to abandon their party organizations relinquish All the political rights privileges dear to freemen in the Effort to preserve what May remain to them life property to the fact that the administration iras to All intents purposes adopted the democratic doctrine that there can be no permanent partition Power nor any peaceable joint exercise Power among such discordant bodies men As Are found in Tho South to the fact that it is doing its utmost to fulfil the prediction made in 1872 by democratic committee the House representatives that Quot no government can Long exist half Black half White. Those whom god has separated let no Man join together. In time Public opinion will vibrate Back to the Ola could Tiou As it existed prior to the disturbing influences the War. Aud when this occurs it will be Tiu political death the negro this the endorsement such a policy by the Republican party Ohio is a total abandonment the vital principle i9 suicide. It is manifestly Tho imperative duty every True Man to oppose if possible Avort Etibo a result now thou May we Cheek How Manifest our disapproval this dangerous mud deadly policy there is apparently but one course left that withholding our votes from All who stand upon the platform which endorses it. We do not desire to Divide in any degree impair the old organization by putting a new ticket in the Field it is the party in Wincn we have been enrolled for Twenty years its heart Bram Are honest. Temporarily it has been led astray time chastening will bring it Back to its principles. No Republican should Compromise himself by voting the democratic ticket for the platform that party so far As the Southern policy the president is concerned is no better indeed no worse than Turat adopted by the Cleveland convention. Tho candidates nominated by that convention Are gentlemen whom we have Long known for whom we Eute Talu great respect. Some them Are personal friends whom we would be glad to serve but. Us fortunately for them for ourselves the country if they Are elected it will be claimed that the abandonment principle duty by the president was endorsed by the convention sustained by the Republican voters at the polls would be justly regarded ast Beondo the controversy an abandonment by the Republican party the principle Equality rights under the Law for Whlon we contend. Quot a there Are defeats that Are victories there Are victories that Are a a Victory won at the expense principle is an irretrievable the necessity which impels us to take the step we propose to take is not our seeking. It has been Brnst upon us a decision can not be avoided. We Are conscious that our motives will be misrepresented our arts misconstrued. The bitter malignancy party Hacks trucking placement will be poured upon us. Every conceivable falsehood will be employed to annoy in sure by to supple tools a who Fawn seek for Power by doctrines fashioned to the varying hour a but to Are certain that we would be untrue to our own Mao Hood Falso to our convictions duty Recreant to a great principle to what we Mcelve to be the highest interest the nation if we neglected to denounce the treachery the administration Rutherford Hayes omitted to use All honorable Means to procure its Corden mation at the same time resent the Insoft which the Cleveland convention deliberately Flung in our faces. We therefore unfurl the Standard the Independent nou office holding Aon office seeking republicans Ohio urge All honest men to rally around it fight for the old Faith the party until a vile treachery is condemned the right vindicated. Though Gesner gave the name Nelson Nicholson when arrested his identity was fully established. Or. Bishop the friends meeting House. Cincinnati 8th month 23,1877. To the editor the commercial to Many our citizens the nomination r. Bishop for governor was a matter that excited no Surprise. They knew him to de a Man Well known in this Community with pet haps a fair Prospect election. As the process unearthing his past life went they still regarded that but the noes sary annoyance to which every Man must be subjected who comes before this Sovereign american people for position. Yesterday. However when the Little transaction relative to the friends was brought to Light there was a feeling Surprise astonishment an honest desire to get at the facts. Those mo3t immediately interested had supposed the matter burled in the past though feeling what they regarded As unjust most keenly at the time they had never even spoken it in their families had Oast no reproach the fair name the democratic candidate for governor. But when in your Issue to Day you give prominence to an article endeavouring to exonerate Bishop by an attempt to bold friends up before the Community As having broken their Faith As having acted in such a Way As to leave them to the mercy All who May choose to prey upon them Justice demands that the Public should be correctly informed upon the Points at Issue. The Church worshipping at eighth Mound Are charged id the article in question with being a faction not the society Friend that by Sufferance they were graciously allowed one half the property in fifth Street to hold to use in such May Uelas should be stipulated by the Benignant donors that Jason Evans hearing their wish to sell had offered them a certain sum but they refused sold to . Lack Nan with the full knowledge understanding that the meeting House was to be converted into a Beer Saloon the writer adds Quot in this View . Bishop had a right to exact three thousand dollars damage possibly at that he will get the worst the this last sentence so completely discloses the animus the writer his moral perceptions it would seem unnecessary to refute his statements. But truth Justice can not always be vindicated by silence. Ofttimes silence is Golden but not when truth lies prostrate. To almost every one general intelligence it is known that in 1828 a separation occurred in the society friends because the teachings Elias Hicks who denied the divinity our lord Jesus Christ the virtue his atoning Sci Lioe. Those who held the orthodox View have by several Legal decisions been pronounced the original society friends now As Ever so regard themselves for the founder the sect George Fox preached no other foundation for salvation than Jesus Christ him crucified Quot did not Accord to each every one the fullest Liberty to think As they believed beat so Long As they did not trample the rights consequently orthodox friends regarded themselves a the rightful owners the property fifth Street it was by dint patient persistent off that some the older members gave their con sent to a division the property they considered the division us a relinquishment rights in such Case one May judge the authority the other party to stipulate that they should do their bidding. The property was therefore put up at Publio auction the statement was utterly false that it Quot was sold with the full knowledge understanding the use to which it was to be All property presented at Public auction is liable to go to uses not in accordance with the wishes the former owner but can such things be avoided orthodox friends wished a More desirable location a More comfortable House. They could not afford to build without Selling some the ground a change location was the decided wish . Nearly All the congregation. We leave it to the Calmer judgment the Community whether they had not a perfect right to sell seek a More desirable location whether they did not . In the whole matter according to the dictations an deserve no Shade odium therefor. Tho express Era Broglio. To the editor the commercial it seems that the withdrawal the Adams express company from the Baltimore Ohio Railroad has had the effect calling into existence three new express organizations to wit the Baltimore Ohio express the Marietta Cincinnati express the Ohio Mississippi express. As to Tho former i suppose it is Plain sailing the Public who desire to patronize it May do so with safety. But How to the two latter which Are supposed to belong to the companies Over whose roads they operate. Both these companies Are in the hands a receiver audit is to be presumed that they Are to All intents purposes insolvent in the Eye the Law. If tier fore i entrust to them property Money for transportation delivery in course which they lose Are robbed to same against whom is recourse what Are the chances recovery value same. It does not appear that the courts having these properties in charge have authorized their officer the receiver to engage in the express business. The receipts issued by the Marietta Cioci Naii express do not designate the ownership thereof that they Are issued by authority the re Oliver nor is there anything a Legal binding character any one shown their face. As this May become a matter serious import to those who find it necessary to use these expresses i have thought it Well enough to make these suggestions with a View to eliciting information the subject.
