North the evidence had been collected by a group of members of Nao and of the Northwest Austin Council who had posed As prospective buyers in order to gather reaction from the realtors. The two groups had picketed at Marshall realty 53 w w North and verus realty 5844 w. North on successive saturdays in mid july claim ing these firms indulged in the same practices. Depaul principal of the Hanson Park elementary school said of the school s conversion to a solar powered school where orthopaedic ally handicapped students will be mainstreamed. Quot i am very committed to the concept of mainstreaming a Depaul said of the Federal and state guidelines that require that handicapped students receive their education As much As possible with other students. Quot the new Rule says All special education children should be Given a program designed to their needs in the least restrictive environment. Education in the least restrictive environment is known As mainstreaming Quot Depaul explained. Quot the general education child will recognize the limitations of the handicapped and be Able to accept and appreciate the handicapped child and function with him Quot Depaul said. A we want people to be sensitive to the rights of the physically handicapped children Quot he added. Quot when i was principal of Schubert school where there were 12 rooms of educable mentally handicapped students the Normal students did not Call the handicapped children names Quot Depaul said. The new North Side physically handicapped Center is the Long awaited dream of the areas handicapped. Handicapped children formerly at Lovett school 6333 w. Bloomingdale and Burbank school 2035 n. Mobile who Are six or older will attend Hanson Park school with the general education students of that school District. The design for this expansion of Hanson Park school 5411 w. Fullerton was done by two handicapped architects who went All Over the country and visited schools for the physically handicapped. Louis Zonka and associates did the preliminary plans and Bill Acheson of architectonic a did the final plan. Hanson Park school will be the first Chicago Public school to use solar Energy. Solar Energy will be used in two ways. Sun scoops in the Library will bring the suns rays directly into the building for warmth and Light while 234 solar panels pivoted and angled to face South will provide some Energy for electricity. Water will by heated by the Sun s rays and stored in a 36, gallon underground tank. The Energy thus stored will be used to reduce the Energy needs of the school in terms of Healing and Cooling. Quot there will be a ten percent saving of electricity with this solar unit Quot George Schoenfeld construction superintendent for the Board of education said water will be Solary pre heated be fore going into the hot water Heaters where there will be a Gas run Back up the old part of the school will receive a special plywood covering and then a second roof for extra insula Tion. Although the Board of education had applied for a Grant to pay for this solar project nothing has been continued on Page 5 that cluttered area above will be the Library in the Section of the Hanson Park school under construction and the Odd looking contraption below is a solar Power collector on the school roof. A feature of the Library will be the unique roof construction with a Sun scoops designed to save Energy used for heating and lighting while the solar Power installation will provide about ten percent of the Power needed for the entire school
