Annual feelings of the Petroleum Exchange and the american silk association frauds on the Revenue the exodus to Europe the Erie railway a waste in the Brooklyn Navy Yard terminal facilities weekly list of bankruptcies Money mutters fire statistics heavy receipts and Export of Grain Etc. New York May is. Editor commercial advertiser several important meetings of com Mercial organizations have been held in this City Outing the past week. The annual meeting of the Petroleum Exchange was held on the 7th, or. We. J. Ives the president in the chair. This institution was organized last april with an Active membership of fifty and since that Tim it its Prosperity has been assured. Through its Agency the volume of business in crude Oil pipe line certificates especially has been largely increased Over that of previous years and the reported sales of the present year which comprise a part Only of the actual trans actions aggregate Over 5,000,000 barrels. The knowledge that Petroleum can be bought and sold like stocks or Gold and with no greater risks says the annual report in rapidly becoming Gene ral and cannot fail to give an impetus to Trade. The Exchange has Given facilities to members of the Trade which they would not now forego and its continued existence is one of the necessities of the Petroleum business. At a meeting of the silk association of America on the 8th, the value of products manufactured during the year was shown to aggregate $21,411,436. The value of reeled silk consumed was $6,466,431, and of spun silk $850,000 besides this there was consumed in sewing silk and twist 453,253 pounds valued at $4,475,958, making the total value of material consumed $12,105,095 the report further sets Forth that in a a fruit jars. A bocce Bohner St co lamps chandeliers glassware Etc., 33 at 35 Wabash-ave., Chicago. Common with other industries of the country silk manufacture has passed through a period of comparative inactivity and depression during the past year a few of the Mills have been closed during the present session of Congress a further element of uncertainty has been introduced by the Prospect of legs nation upon the Tariff which has discouraged enterprises. The partial sue a a of the government in checking the extensive operations of silk smugglers and bringing them to Justice is alluded to in the report. Systematic under Aida ton of foreign Market values has grown to such proportions under the adva lorem system As to Call loudly for an immediate remedy. The complaint comes up from american merchants in every importing City from Boston and Phila Delphia from Chicago Cincinnati and Baltimore. It is not alone the legit mate importing business of new York merchants that has suffered loss it is matter in which the mercantile interests of the whole country Are concerned. The Hope is indulged in that the administration will compel an improvement in the Mode of collecting the Revenue and so elevate the standards of commercial honesty. The exodus to Europe continues very Large and the outgoing steamers Are filled to their utmost capacity. All the berths of the White Star line Are engage up to the 20th of june and those of the French line for May and june. The Cunard steamers Are filled to the 5th of june and the Cabin lists of the steamers on the other lines Are unusually Large the attraction at the Paris exposition is drawing Sway a numerous class of peo pie who Are regular attendants at the theatres and under a pressure of unprofitable business therefore most of these establishments Are preparing to close up Eailler this season than usual. On the application of receiver Jewett of the Erie railway judge Donohue has granted an order confirming Bis accounts authorizing him to Transfer All the property to the new company con to Nuong him As receiver to discharge his indebtedness As such and to defend and prosecute actions by and against him As receiver and discharging him in other respects. It is charged that there is an unwarranted and extravagant waste in con Neelon with the Sale of condemned stores at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. It is said that Many of the articles Are condemned on the slightest pretence that boats Are doomed for the most Trilling defects and that saws and tools masts and rigging in fact everything connect and with a ship Are sent to the waste storerooms for ridiculously groundless causes. The Navy department should speedily investigate these charges and Stop the leak. A Large number of Railroad and steamship men assembled on Board the White Star Steamer Germania to celebrate the completion of the Belt line Side track connecting the Central and Hudson roads with the steamship pier direct thus doing away with the drayman As intermediaries in the handling of Grain. The freight cars which formerly ran by the Dock on their Way to the freight depot in Hudson Street now go straight to the vessel at the pier. The car Meh suffer seriously in consequence of this new arrangement but the City will be the gainer thereby. Miler commission merchant lab liitle $78,000 claim r. Griggs Railroad sup plies liabilities $1,000,000. There is no important change in the Money Market to be noted. Those wanting Money readily command ail they need provided they have Watis fac tory Security to offer for its payment on demand or according to contract. The Only parties who complain of a tight Money Market and clamor for More currency Are those who have Little or nothing to give for it. Good Security will command As much Money As any legitimate business operation is Likely to require. Call Loans to Good borrowers Are quoted at 4j to 5j per cent generally at the medium figure. There is a Active demand for prime commercial paper which is in Small Supply and rates Are 5 to 6 per cent strictly first class two Amo paper at 5 to 5$ per cent strictly first class one name paper at 64 to 74 per cent loons on government collateral at 4 to 5 per cent on first class Bonds and stocks at 6 per cent. During the first three months of the current year there were 444 fires in the City involving an estimated loss of $308 605 on buildings and $694,635 on contents the insurance on the former was $2,363, 116, and on the latter $2,902,286. The exports of wheat from this port alone during the past week reached the aggregate of 1,230,000 bushels while the transactions of the produce Exchange involved Over 1,300,000 bushels. The weeks exports of other Grain were 480 995 bushels of Corn and 91800 bushels of Oats besides Barley and Rye and 23,675 barrels of flour. The demand for wheat has materially reduced the Supply on the spot and prices accordingly Are firmer. Of Corn the sales on change during the past week reached 1,600,000 bushels. As showing the magnitude of the Supply of Grain now at Luke and sea Board ports East and West it May be stated that at the latest count it reached the enormous total of 22,013,853 bushels against 19,516,342 bushels at the same time last year. The receipts of Grain at this Point Are steadily increasing and during last week were no less than 1,710,000 bushels wheat 1,446,184 bushels Corn 370,243 bushels Oats 27,620 bushels Barley and 152,624 bushels Rye besides 83,486 barrels flour. Estimate however that one half of the 778,331 acres were purchased or entered for the purpose of immediate settlement or cultivation which would give 2,332 More new farms 160 acres each. There was also ,058 acres entered upon the Sioux and Chippewa half Breed strip and 507,984 acres taken up under the lumber culture Law. Leaving these two latter items out of the calculation we have an aggregate of about 19,500 new farms commenced during the year. This Means ,500 new Homes. In five years from now these 19,500 farms under Good management ought to produce annually some 20,000,000 bushels of wheat some 40,000,000 bushels of Corn and some 400,000 head of cattle or Ess. Manhattan. New farms started within a year. Does any one know How Many new farms were opened in the state and their territories last year How Many new log Cabins have been built How Many acres of Virgin soil slowed up for the first time it is not probable that any one does know with exactness but there is a Little table in the report of the Secretary of the Interior presented to Congress some time ago which furnished the material for an approximately Correct answer to these questions during the year ending with june last there were taken up under the Home Stead Law 1,875,909 acres. New land taken up under the Homestead Law is for actual cultivation Aud is generally taken in lots of 160 acres. It would appear therefore that More than 17,000 new farms were commenced last year under the Homestead Law alone. But this is not All. There were sold during the year 640,961 acres for Cash and 137,-640 acre a were allotted on military land warrants. It is no doubt True that a portion of these 778,331 acres were bought or entered by other than actual settlers by speculators or by persons who made investments of this Nat ure for future purposes. It would be fair to imports of american Cottons. The fact that american Cotton goods have during the past three years been regularly imported into this country in Large quantities is Well known to the Home Trade houses in Manchester who Are daily sending them out to retailers at prices which compare very favourably with those of English makes. Exporters to most foreign markets Are also aware that for some time past american Cali Coes shipped dire i Bruni the United states have seriously interfered with the Shie of English goods abroad. For some time it was supposed that this Udden e expansion in the Al port of american Cotton goods was simply the result of a temporary glut in the touted states Home Market and that the it overflow would soon cease. It appears however that it is increasing year by year. The following figures which we take from the new York commercial chronicle give the number of packages of american Cali Coes shipped from that port luring each of the past five year packages. 173. In pm we. Jiff a 175. Pici 1876. 74, itt 1677.lo, to 7 thus the Trade has grown nearly sevenfold within the Short period of four years. The value of the 104,307 packages shipped last year we estimate at ,.>1,126. And when it is remembered that the exports irom Boston. San Francisco and other ports us Well As the Overland sex Porta to Canada and Mexico have to be added it is evident that the English Cotton manufacturer has now to reckon with a very formidable competitor across the Atlantic. The chief countries to which the shipments from now York were sent last year Are great Britain. China the River plate Canada Hayti Africa Australia Venezuela Holland and Germany. The main reason for this sudden increase in the foreign consumption of american Cotton goods is the Low prices at which they Are offered. This again is due to the very great reduction which american manufacturers have been Able to make in the Cost of production and especially in . Ish Trade journal. American locomotive for Rowda. As illustrative of the rapidity by which the order received by an american firm for forty locomotives for the russian government was executed the new York daily bulletin gives the following facts the government required one Hundred and Twenty five locomotives of which the americans received the bonding of forty. On december 15th, a Cable dispatch was received saying Quot go ahead Quot and As the award had been somewhat anticipated preparations were very soon made. Telegraphic orders were sent to various Iron works for steel and bolter plates and a Large extra Force of men was Token on increasing the number from 1300 to 2400. In three weeks from the time the contract had been ent it red four boilers were completed and other work progressed with them. In the fourth week twelve More boilers were done in the fifth ten More in the sixth eleven and the last of the forty in seven weeks. The first engine was put under steam on the 5th of january and the test february the 9th. The first was finished on january the la or less than three weeks working time and the last on the 13th of february. During this time Twenty nine other locomotives were delivered to Twenty five different parties making sixty nine locomotives in fifty eight Days sundays and holidays included. Some idea of the Closen ase with which the contract had Bomi Fig ared May be gained from the feet that the company is not yet certain of a Clear profit. Twenty men have been sent oat with the engines to set them up Sud run them and the contract is not completed until the engines have run Long enough to satisfy the russian government engineers of their perfection. Alway a Hance. It is scarcely necessary to remind reasonable men that if Thoy wish to be sad and sour to grumble and complain there is always a Chance. Reasons for being cast Down and dejected Are As plenty As blackberries in the height of Harvest. If one things goes right you May be sure there is always something else going wrong Aud if one thing is in order something else is out of joint or at any rate soon will be. The chief difference in the feelings and dispositions of people results from the different Way of looking at things. Few nights Ore so dark that no stars Are to be seen the thing is to look them out and keep your eyes on them and make the most of what Light you can discover
