Good Security will command As much Money As any legitimate business operation is Likely to require. Call Loans to Good borrowers Are quoted at 4j to 5j per cent generally at the medium figure. There is a Active demand for prime commercial paper which is in Small Supply and rates Are 5 to 6 per cent strictly first class two Amo paper at 5 to 5$ per cent strictly first class one name paper at 64 to 74 per cent loons on government collateral at 4 to 5 per cent on first class Bonds and stocks at 6 per cent. During the first three months of the current year there were 444 fires in the City involving an estimated loss of $308 605 on buildings and $694,635 on contents the insurance on the former was $2,363, 116, and on the latter $2,902,286. The exports of wheat from this port alone during the past week reached the aggregate of 1,230,000 bushels while the transactions of the produce Exchange involved Over 1,300,000 bushels. The weeks exports of other Grain were 480 995 bushels of Corn and 91800 bushels of Oats besides Barley and Rye and 23,675 barrels of flour. The demand for wheat has materially reduced the Supply on the spot and prices accordingly Are firmer. Of Corn the sales on change during the past week reached 1,600,000 bushels. As showing the magnitude of the Supply of Grain now at Luke and sea Board ports East and West it May be stated that at the latest count it reached the enormous total of 22,013,853 bushels against 19,516,342 bushels at the same time last year. The receipts of Grain at this Point Are steadily increasing and during last week were no less than 1,710,000 bushels wheat 1,446,184 bushels Corn 370,243 bushels Oats 27,620 bushels Barley and 152,624 bushels Rye besides 83,486 barrels flour. Estimate however that one half of the 778,331 acres were purchased or entered for the purpose of immediate settlement or cultivation which would give 2,332 More new farms 160 acres each. There was also ,058 acres entered upon the Sioux and Chippewa half Breed strip and 507,984 acres taken up under the lumber culture Law. Leaving these two latter items out of the calculation we have an aggregate of about 19,500 new farms commenced during the year. This Means ,500 new Homes. In five years from now these 19,500 farms under Good management ought to produce annually some 20,000,000 bushels of wheat some 40,000,000 bushels of Corn and some 400,000 head of cattle or Ess. Does any one know How Many new farms were opened in the state and their territories last year How Many new log Cabins have been built How Many acres of Virgin soil slowed up for the first time it is not probable that any one does know with exactness but there is a Little table in the report of the Secretary of the Interior presented to Congress some time ago which furnished the material for an approximately Correct answer to these questions during the year ending with june last there were taken up under the Home Stead Law 1,875,909 acres. New land taken up under the Homestead Law is for actual cultivation Aud is generally taken in lots of 160 acres. It would appear therefore that More than 17,000 new farms were commenced last year under the Homestead Law alone. But this is not All. There were sold during the year 640,961 acres for Cash and 137,-640 acre a were allotted on military land warrants. It is no doubt True that a portion of these 778,331 acres were bought or entered by other than actual settlers by speculators or by persons who made investments of this Nat ure for future purposes. It would be fair to imports of american Cottons. The fact that american Cotton goods have during the past three years been regularly imported into this country in Large quantities is Well known to the Home Trade houses in Manchester who Are daily sending them out to retailers at prices which compare very favourably with those of English makes. Exporters to most foreign markets Are also aware that for some time past american Cali Coes shipped dire i Bruni the United states have seriously interfered with the Shie of English goods abroad. For some time it was supposed that this Udden e expansion in the Al port of american Cotton goods was simply the result of a temporary glut in the touted states Home Market and that the it overflow would soon cease. It appears however that it is increasing year by year. The following figures which we take from the new York commercial chronicle give the number of packages of american Cali Coes shipped from that port luring each of the past five year packages. 173. The chief countries to which the shipments from now York were sent last year Are great Britain. China the River plate Canada Hayti Africa Australia Venezuela Holland and Germany. The main reason for this sudden increase in the foreign consumption of american Cotton goods is the Low prices at which they Are offered. This again is due to the very great reduction which american manufacturers have been Able to make in the Cost of production and especially in . Ish Trade journal. American locomotive for Rowda. As illustrative of the rapidity by which the order received by an american firm for forty locomotives for the russian government was executed the new York daily bulletin gives the following facts the government required one Hundred and Twenty five locomotives of which the americans received the bonding of forty. On december 15th, a Cable dispatch was received saying Quot go ahead Quot and As the award had been somewhat anticipated preparations were very soon made. Telegraphic orders were sent to various Iron works for steel and bolter plates and a Large extra Force of men was Token on increasing the number from 1300 to 2400. In three weeks from the time the contract had been ent it red four boilers were completed and other work progressed with them. In the fourth week twelve More boilers were done in the fifth ten More in the sixth eleven and the last of the forty in seven weeks. The first engine was put under steam on the 5th of january and the test february the 9th. The first was finished on january the la or less than three weeks working time and the last on the 13th of february. During this time Twenty nine other locomotives were delivered to Twenty five different parties making sixty nine locomotives in fifty eight Days sundays and holidays included. Twenty men have been sent oat with the engines to set them up Sud run them and the contract is not completed until the engines have run Long enough to satisfy the russian government engineers of their perfection.
