Chester Times (Newspaper) - November 4, 1933, Chester, Pennsylvania PRIMING THE MYTHKAL BMO PV U FINAL With All News of the t 53TH 17741 Daily Leased Wire Reports df United Tress UPt and International News Service IMS CHKSTKH IA SATURDAY NOVKMHKK I KIlSHTlSKN PAGES PRICE TWQ Next TiiiesdayV Election The Chester Times is a Republican newspaper it always has been and it is reasonably foreseeable that it will continue to bn Republican in its political principles But a newspaper like an in dividual should always be prepared to tfivo sound reasons for ifs faith and we feel that our reasons should be frankly stated at the present time with an important county election only three dnys away This paper will support the whole Republican ticket as it lias always supported it before because it believes in the fundamental correctness of the policies of that party In so it docs not disparage the national leadership of President Koesevelt and which in most particulars has deserved and received the cordial support of the people regardless of party Hut neither have we any apologies for having loyally supported the candidacy of Hoover whose devotion to the public interest was equally pieat and who typified the Republican attitude toward national affairs The confidence of many Republicans in the administration of local affairs Liy officials whoancharged with being unfaithful to their trust has undoubtedly been shaken by admitted huge embezzlement and by revelations of graft and corruption incident to a criminal trial now in progress Wo do not intend to prejudge the outcome of that trial so far the guilt or innocence of any particular individual is concerned We do however refute the imputation that the Republictin party is on trial What certain individuals may be charged with is their own responsibility ami not the Republican partys But it must necessarily follow that whatever the verdict may be the Republicans of Delaware county must see that the unsavory and unsatisfactory conditions as have been shown to exist are cleaned up Nor should all those revelations come as an entire surprise to any in this community The Times has from time to time in the past published warning articles referring to local conditions withHie greatest frankness and demanding that they be corrected or cleaned up It is probable that if warnings given by this newspaper had been heeded the county would have been spared the shame of this current trial and Delaware County cleaned up without the interposition of the Covcrnment at Washington We believe however that this duty should still be imposed upon the party to which a majority of the voters own allegiance and that the initial step should be a vote next Tuesday on strict party lines trusting that the officials so chosen will demonstrate their independ ence of any sinister influences and be true to the best traditions of their party We concede that a new spirit of responsibility to the people on the part of their elected servants is desirable but we are not prepared to admit that such spirit is impossible of development among candidates of the Republican party The Times has faith in Chester Delaware county its courts and the Republican nominees in the city and county and while it can make no promises for any candidate it believes that each one senses the feeling of the public and one and all if elected will work in the interest of the taxpayer and sec that all the graft and forms of vice which the System has created is banished from 6ur county forever FORD OFFICIALS ORDER LAYOFFS IN AUTO PLANTS t 9000
