Charleston Gazette-Mail (Newspaper) - December 16, 1962, Charleston, West Virginia A dec. 16, 1962 sunday Gazette mail Charlo Jon West al Ronli sunday beat Alvon Nate Rohrbough packers can c Linch Crown today although Alvon Fortunatus Rohrbough who prefers to be called Nate turned out one great basketball team after another and some darned Good football teams too during his coaching career at Glenville College he has to Call his 1938 Cage team the finest he Ever produced. As a matter of fact the 1937-38 school year at Glenville was the most rewarding of All to Nate As his football team went unbeaten in West Virginia conference play losing Only to Gene Edwards St. Vincent eleven 26-0, and to Waynes Burg 12-7, in non conference play and his basketball team romped through 28 games without a loss and won the Wavu tourney. Nate must have been mighty proud of this team which included Abe Lilley prank Martino Louis Romano red Davies and Hollis Cottle As its starters. Oth Rohrbough Serwise he would t have ranked it ahead of his great teams of 1929 19-1 and 1939 22-3. ? ? ? won 43 games in Row the pioneers won a game on feb. 8, 1937, and then reeled off 42 More victories before finally losing a game in january of 1939 to Toledo u. On the Toledo floor. The great 1938 team contributed 28 of these 43 victories. He had just been informed of winning a place in the West Virginia sports writers Hall of Fame and was mighty Happy about it. I count this one of the great thrills of my life said Nate who had come to Glenville As coach in 1926 after a great career As a football end and basketball guard at West Virginia u. ? ? ? got third place in naia most West virginians remember Nate and his Glenville basketball teams for their great performance in the naia tournament in Kansas City in 1939. The pioneers had passed up the West Virginia conference tourney that year and then battled their Way to the Semi finals of the naia before finally losing to southwestern of Winfield Kan. Southwestern went on to win the championship and Glenville won third place finishing its season with a Fine 21-2 record. That team had lost Martino and Cottle from the year before but got a lot of Good mileage out of Romano Harold Noroski Bob Armstrong Bill Whetsell Lilley Earl Spencer junion Rhoades and Davies. ? ? ? Romano twice All tourney we played some great basketball out there said Nate but most of the teams were too big for us. We fought against great Romano who is now basketball coach at Charleston High school was named to the All tournament team that year and As matter of fact repeated by making the All tourney team the next year although Glenville did t do so Well losing to southwestern again 38-37, after polishing off Wayne tech 50-38, in the first round. The 1939 team was led by Lilley who scored a whopping for that Day 332 Points. Abe had been named the Best Center in the Pittsburgh District by the Pittsburgh Sun Telegraph in 1938, when he scored 356 Points. ? ? He asked no quarters and gave none and his athletes loved and admired him then As they do today. Former Glenville boys Are sprinkled All Over West Virginia and a great percentage of those who had the Good Fortune to play under Alvon Fortunatus Rohrbough have been highly successful in later ventures. He is truly worthy of a place in the Hall of Fame.
