Later the system went to e-911, or enhanced 911, which provides information to the dispatcher such As the address even if the caller cannot speak or does no to know it. It was a Good upgrade. Today the 911 system has gone from Nice to have to an essential service pretty quickly with Many people alive because it works pretty Well. The system is used constantly and answered by professionals who can do a number of things on the phone including assist with first Aid cardiopulmonary resuscitation and even help deliver a baby. And. In the next few years there is a requirement the system be Able to locate cell phone callers in the same Way. Someone will Call and through the magic of wireless technology the dispatch Center within just a few feet will know where the caller is located. Think about that. You Are in a Field on a Mountain hiking on a Trail or driving along in a unfamiliar place and need 911, they will know exactly where you Are. While this technology sounds Good it does comes with some problems because As the number of Calls go up the number of responders probably won t. When burglar and panic alarms first became popular they were useful and helped catch burglars. But they were and Are activated sometimes when no crime is occurring or by Accident. The alarm activation generates a police response even to false ones. The significant number of false alarms has led to better response policies and unfortunately an occasional police car Accident. So what do false alarms and e-911 have in common false alarms or in this Case 911 hang ups often Lead to an emergency response and the vast majority of them Are also false. But Don t confuse real 911 Calls with 911 hang up Calls. The 911 Calls Are real Calls for help and 911 hang ups Are Calls from a phone and often Are just an open line a Tisdial or a technical problem. Sometimes the line is Busy which can mean someone simply mind baled the phone on the Call Back so we have to physically go and see if there is a problem. When we can resolve the Call Over the phone it can be taken care of fairly quickly. But sometimes we can t and May have to respond to a false report while other real Calls Are pending. We have discussed this problem and not yet found an acceptable solution. If these were alarms we could notify the owner we Arentt responding anymore or Only As we have time because of the false Calls. But with 911 hang ups we can to be sure they Aren t real. So we have to go Check. When cell phones Are added to the mix it will aggravate the problem. And like the Story of the Little boy who cried Wolf if the system cries Wolf too often it wont be of any value because we wont be Able to Chase them All.
