In fact by the time this column is printed Christmas will be less than two weeks away. And we All know what this time of year Means Don t we that s right Christmas letters you know the ones. The letters that we Send out with our season s greetings to our beloved families and closest friends this time every year. Christmas letters have become a yearly ritual at our House kind of like going out and finding a pretty Green tree growing on a Hillside and then killing it and dragging it into our living room so the cats can have something new to play with for a couple of weeks until we haul it Over to the Yard Birds parking lot and run it through a Chipper and turn it into mulch. As for the Christmas letter tradition each year my wife and i discuss what to write in the letter because we want to share what has happened in our family with All of those close friends that we have no other Contact with throughout the rest of the year. As we sit Down together i am always reminded of one of the lyrics from that old Christmas classic a at Christmas i hug and i kiss my wife s Mother. But the rest of the year we done to speak to each not that i done to speak to my Mother in Law except at Christmas but i think you can see what i m getting at. Right our Christmas letter ritual goes the same every year. I sit Down and Start typing the letter but no matter How hard i try. It always ends up like one of the emails that i Send out to a the gang Quot every few Days. Those Are similar to my weekly newspaper columns except in my emails i am not As careful about being such a serious and professional writer. In fact some of my emails can begin to Border on just Plain silly. Hard to believe in t it anyway every year i write a Christmas letter and Tell about each person in our family during the past year adding my own embellishments Here and there for pure entertainment value. Then my wife reads it. Reminds me that it Isnit one of my emails and declares that we can t mail it out the Way i wrote it or All of our closest friends that Only hear from us once a year will think we re weird or something. She then rewrites the Christmas letter making Only a few minor changes. Of she makes a number of changes but she stays along the same theme that i started. Ohall right. She changes almost everything but she does leave in the same names for the kids that i used in my original letter. Which is Good since those Are the names we gave them at birth. There Are you Happy now Well the important thing is that the letters always go out and we maintain that close Bond with those people for yet another year. After All it would be terrible if we lost that once a year Contact with our closest friends through the Christmas letter.
