Centralia Chronicle (Newspaper) - December 13, 2001, Centralia, Washington
A2 a the chronicle Centralia Chehalis wash., thursday dec. 13, 2001local by Boh Hansen snippets of life the life of a Christmas tree Farmer elements make tree farming no laughing matter one of the things i do to make a living is grow Christmas Trees. Of course this is the very time of the year that i am deeply involved in that activity. So it Only seemed right that i should write something humorous about harvesting Christmas Trees. There Are a lot of different ways i could go with this topic. I could Tell about the Days in the tree Patch when the Sun barely seems to lift above the horizon. In those december Days the dark Gray Clouds growl As they nibble away at the Light. They swirl and bluster Ever threatening us the forlorn Christmas tree workers. Still we toil All the while praying the storm will hold off until we get those last few Trees loaded on the truck. But i guess there in t much to laugh about in that. Then perhaps i should Tell of the times when the Crew members Jam themselves into the truck Early on a snowy morning. At least the pickup s Heater when it works warms the harrowing icy Road trip to the tree Patch. That will be the last warmth we will feel for quite some time. When finally we do arrive at our destination we see a wonderland made Beautiful by a fresh covering of White flakes. Yes it is a Beautiful sight a while we re in the truck. It is Only by the Force of our Iron wills that we Are Able to pry ourselves out and into the elements. For we know what awaits us. Every Snow Laden tree must be handled and As it is the Snow will leap from the branches and attach itself to our bodies. The hands Are the worst. Soaking wet gloves Are a Magnet for the Snow. And the instant they land the melting flakes Send their numbing chill through the maternal. Through the skin and into Bone itself. But then i suppose there Isnit much humor in that either. Curiously the Days of Snow May not be the worst ones at All. I recall a particular dim lit Day when the temperature was in the mid-30s. On that Day the rain was not allowed to fall naturally by Gravity. Instead it was driven by a howling wind which was particularly Strong on the top of a Hill where we worked. We had Many Trees to carry Bale and Load that Day so it was hard to Tell where the wetness came from. Was it from the Rainwater that crept in through the smallest opening in the rain gear or was it from the sweat of hard labor regardless the result was the same and dryness was Only a dim memory. It is not Likely that death would claim us on such Days a As Long As we kept moving. But taking a break for lunch would be too risky. I m still not laughing though. I Don t want to make it sound As if the weather is always horrible. There Are a few Days when the elements do not threaten our lives. This is usually the time when the equipment Breaks Down. Then the whole Crew will stand around twiddling its thumbs while i engage in a wrestling match with the tree Bailer thus providing great entertainment for the Crew. And they also have the Comfort of knowing they Are getting paid for doing nothing. I think i am failing miserably in my attempt to bring a Little lightness into your lives though perhaps you will now appreciate your Christmas Trees More. As for myself there is Consolation at Days end. When i have come in from the Battle i will often collapse on the Couch. As is her habit my wife will come and cuddle up next to me. She will say. Quot you smell Good a like a Christmas and so she will linger at my Side. Then i recognize that it has All been worthwhile. A a a Boh Hansen a local resident can be reached at hhansen6@juno.com.
