Cedar Rapids Press-American (Newspaper) - July 2, 1970, Cedar Rapids, IowaPage sixteen comment from the Capitol crime unions inflation by Van Neff not Long ago attorney general John Mitchell stated that organized crime has a stranglehold on a giant Airport in the new York area. He ind i Ca Ted that by the gangsters gaining control of the Drivers Union As Well As the Union of the truckers they were Able to perpetrate crimes in huge proportions. The Union bigwigs know full Well what unions Are mafia and gangster control led. It seems to me that the so called House cleaning starts Here. If the unions can t clean House themselves it Means that Union control is out of control of which i m firmly con Vinced. It never seemed logical that National unions were a solution to local problems. To the Public the cure is worse than the illness. They have suffered the indignities of Long strikes shortages of necessities and untold privations simply because a Union has maintained that they want More Money and the hell with is this kind of help the working Man deserves from his Union after All the unions were created to Settle not to stir up disputes. There is a tendency in some quart ers to believe almost anything that is in print. This is an attitude that i personally find deplorable because it is apparent that so much of the news that is provided to us is slanted. One item i consider preposterous is a very shaded piece of reporting in a National Magazine which obviously seeks sym Pathy for Eldrige Cleaver and husband of Black panthers. According to a distinguished Black reporter the Panther group As Well As or. Cleaver Are very much Mali Gnad. For example convicted criminal and fugitive Cleaver is quoted As saying that he d demands immediate Justice in the Case of the police officer who killed a Black pan ther. He insists that the cop pay for his crime. But what about charges of criminal rape against Cleaver should not he be forced to pay for that crime As Well or does he think there is o n e Brand of Justice for the so called minorities and another for the rest of i find it hard to believe that a pol iceman whose very livelihood depends on his commitment to keeping Law and order would wantonly kill. The Black panthers on the other hand Are admitted and vociferously dedicated to terrorizing people bombing Public places causing wholesale a disturbances and killing Law officers. To my mind this attitude renders them immediately suspect in any Case where matters per Taining to vicious revolution is being charged. Even in our land of plenty those big fat pay checks Are buying less and less. The reason inflation mainly caused by strike after strike resulting in wage increases that soar ahead of the materials produced. Aren t strikes stupid though in a strike nobody wins. The higher that wages go the higher prices climb and in the Ong run everybody has a Little ies to show for it. As proof i gathered i few facts from our government s Bureau of labor statistics since 196p through last november the average weekly wage of workers who Are employed wage of workers who Are employed maning let s say items like Tele phones or truck parts has risen from 52 to if he has a wife and two children taxes leave him a galloping inflation leaves him even less he now has a spendable income of 81, com-1 pared to the 09 he enjoyed when be was making nearly less five years ago. If be to sit Idle during a Long suite at his Plant the chances Are lie made much less. The strike tactic is losing popularity be cause it benefits no one least of All the striker. May we please have some suggestions for a starter How about courses in economics for Union Lead ers has it occurred to anyone to ask Why France saw fit to Send 100 Mirage supersonic Jet planes to Libya Actu ally a purchasing agent for Egypt yet stubbornly refuses to deliver the 50 fighter planes Israel has bought and paid for they attempt to hide their reasons in a flood of double talk. The soviets do not hesitate to Send their arms All Over the world. It is Russia who actually fuels the fighting All o ver the map not Only in the Middle East but in Vietnam the Caribbean Africa and Points North South East and West. The communists Are d dedicated to world turmoil yet the civilized Neutral French sell put. Viewpoint should insist on teacher Quality according to officials of the teacher unions the starting salary for beginning teachers and the graduated scale of educators pay is on a competitive level. As a result for the first time in a num her of years there is no shortage of instructors for the 1970-71 school term. Since the taxpayers of Cedar rapids seem agreeable to an in crease in the property tax rate of almost five Mills to finance the operation of the schools and since no teacher shortage exists there should be an insistence on the part of the local citizenry to Force the Board to eliminate bad teachers. In other words those instructors who Are known for their inability to communicate with students or get along with parents should have their contracts reviewed and their employment terminated so As to sustain the degree of Quality of which the school system has Long boasted but has often there is a definite need to Weed the bad teacher from the Good in order to insure that our children receive a Quality education. It s a Small request for the Price Well All pay. Rubin s harangues despite the Many comments about the recent Campus turmoil and most notably the Kent state University incident no one has Given much attention to the fact that Jerry Rubin of the Chicago seven delivered a speech on that Campus Only a few Days before the violence broke out. Rubin told the More than 1, 500 Kent students that until you Are prepared to kill your parents you re not really prepared to change the country because our parents Are our first oppressors. Rubin then went on to urge students to become disrupter and Law Breakers. There Are Many universities in which the faculty seems to be at least As instrumental in promoting anti War demonstrations and closing Down classes As some students. What the responsible members of the Campus Community must do is attempt to guard against the development of a climate that encourages senseless emotionalism. If University administrators continue to allow radicals like Jerry Rubin to speak on campuses Jor High the Kent incident will be followed by Many More tragedies in the months to come. Take Stock. In America encourages flying the Flag to the when the newly formed Marine corps league of the Cedar Valley detachment was chartered the Resolution was made to become an Active part of the Community. For our americanism project we elected to make available to those of this Community would would like a proud Way of displaying the american Flag a Flag kit that we will install. This is an 18-foot, baked enamel steel pole mounted in Concrete and Complete with Pulley Bas Clete Plas tic Langard and 5 x 7-foot, Cotton Flag. In Short a per Manely installed facility which makes it convenient and easy to Fly the Flag As Many Days As the Homeowner wishes we encourage it to become an every Day event the Cedar Valley detachment of the mar Ine corps league will install these u nits in the Cedar rapids Marion Hiawatha areas for 50. The Hope is that we will have erected of the end of the summer. The Price incidentally is just a Bove Cost but any monies Over the Cost of the Flag kits will go to the advancement of Community projects in the Public and civic interest. We installed the first one at my residence 2524 Towne House drive and on the second Day the Flag flew from the newly mounted pole there were eight other Homes in that Block that had the Flag flying and three or Ders for the Nole were taken from the neighbors. This confirms our belief that the flying of our country s Flag will be infectious. Thank you Jerry c. Carr commandant Cedar Valley detachment of the Marine corps league
