HEW Begins Investigation Of Two Drugs
WASHINGTON (AP) - An immediate investigation of a possible link between two widely prescribed anti-high blood pressure drugs and breast cancer in older women is being started by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare.
Officials said the drugs, reserpine and rescinnamine, have been used in the United States for 20 years and account for more than one-fourth of the medicines prescribed for hypertension. Reserpine alone is used by three million to four million U. S. patients.
Separate studies done in Bristol, England; Helsinki, Finland, and Boston, Mass., are to be published in this Saturday’s edition of Lancet, the British medical journal.
The studies found that among women over 60 years old the breast cancer rate was as much as three times higher than normal for those who had taken reserpine over long periods of time.
Officials of HEW' said further investigation is necessary because the studies involved checks of patients’ records and not clinical drug trials.
A preliminary review of the studies has been made by the National Cancer institute, the National Heart and Lung institute, the National Institute of Mental Health, the Food and Drug Administration and the Veterans Administration.
Charles C. Edwards, HEW assistant secretary of health, said the agencies have agreed to alert the general public and the medical profession to the findings.
However, until the U. S. review is concluded, Edwards recommended that there be “no general change or disruption therapy” in patients with high blood pressure.
He emphasized that the studies did not find a general increased cancer risk in hypertension patients nor an increased risk associated with other anti-hypertension drugs.
Mrs. Marcos Visits Chou In Hospital
MANILA (UPI) - Mrs Imelda Marcos, the Philippine First Lady, arrived Friday in Peking for an eight-day visit and chatted with Chinese Premier Chou at a Peking hospital, the official Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported.
In a dispatch from Peking, the PNA said Mrs. Marcos, wife of President Ferdinand E. Marcos, was invited by Mrs. Chou to visit the premier at the hospital since he could not meet her at the airport.
PNA said it was the first time Chou received a visiting dignitary' since July 13 when he met Sen. Henry Jackson, (D-Wash.).
‘‘(The) invitation to see the prime minister was conveyed by Madame Chou, who received the First Lady at the sitting room of villa No. 18 of government guest house after the brief airport ceremony,” PNA said
‘‘Madame Chou told Madame Marcos that the prime minister, who had been taken ill, had desired to welcome her at the airport But since he could not, asked her to see him at his hospital bed,” PNA said.
PNA said Mrs. Marcos asked Mrs. Chou about the prime minister’s health Chou is reportedly suffering from heart trouble.
‘‘He is feeling much better.” PNA quoted Mrs. Chou as replying.
There were no other details of the meeting
One-Eyed Horse Prompts Refund
ST. LOUIS (UPI) - William Toney’s horse is not an old gray mare, but he’s getting his money back anyhow, by court order
Toney, a former St. Louisan now living in Houston, bought the horse for his teen aged daughter. He sued to get his money back when he found out that the horse was blind in one eye.
Judge Robert Campbell denied the claim, saying the horse was good enough for trail rides and shows.
Toney appealed the case and appeals court Judge George F. Gunn agreed that he should get his $690 back. Gunn said the horse* ‘ was definitely not an old gray mare. But, alas, neither was she what she used to be ”
