Another pour was to fill the other side. By Frank Hawkins ( HOUMAN VALLEY, Iraq (AP) — “I thought they would kill mc You can expect that in any war,” said Iraqi air force Ll. Safa Shalal, a prisoner of the Kurdish rebels here in northern Iraq Shalal’s Soviet built Mi«-1» was downed on Auk 23 near Rawanduiz during a strafing run against positions of the Kurdish rebel army, the Pesh Merga. A machine-gun bullet hit a control line on a wing flap He lost control of the plane and was forced to eject Now he is one of 127 Iraqi military prisoners here wondering when they will set* their families and homes again Fighting for Autonomy The Kurdish are fighting for an autonomous state within Iraq “In general, I am satisfied with my treatment here The manager is like a father to all the prisoners He has a good heart,” Shalal, 23. son of a retired schoolteacher in Baghdad, told visiting newsmen Shalal said he was a member of the Iraqi air force’s 7th squadron bases! at Mosul Air Base north of Baghdad. He said the air strike that led to his capture was only his second combat mission. But the Kurds said the log book of his plane showed he had flown a large number of sorties against them, including an air strike two weeks before against a village rn which two children were killed “He is a war criminal,” said one Kurd. But there was no evidence they had tried to take revenge Asked if we would fly missions against the Kurds again, Shalal coolly answered, “I am a career officer. I must follow orders ” Dressed in a green polo shirt and pajama bottoms. Shalal lives in a tidy single room with blankets on the floor for a bed Because he is a pilot and an officer, he clearly gets preferential treatment. His is the only single room in the large house originally built as a home for a local mayor. Others, like Shehab Ahmed. 25. a tough-looking 5-foot-2 inch Iraqi commando, must share a room with as many as eight or nine others Ahmed was a member of the Maghaweer commando unit and saw IO days of action on the Golan Heights in Syria during last year’s Middle East war. He was captured on a mountain outpost several months ago when Kurdish guerilllas overran the position in a night raid. Fourteen of his comrades were killed The rest were taken prisoner with Ahmed They came at us from different angles.” he recalled. “They were determined and we couldn’t resist.” Kurdish spokesman say their prisoners are fed twice a day on a diet of rice and bread, with vegetables and meat on a regular basis In one corner was a large case of tomatoes that had just been delivered The prisoners are supplied wwith soap, razor blades and small amounts of pocket money for cigarets. The Kurds say tea is served three or four times a day and a doctor visits each morning. Only 21 Guards For the entire building, there are only 20 men who take turns guarding the building ‘‘These people are treated better than our own Pesh Merga in the field,” said a Kurd. “They are treated according to our convention, which is IO times better than the Geneva convention Also, when they hear what. is happening at the front, they are all happy to be here. Some of them never had such good treatment in their own units in the Iraqi army.”CELEBRATION G SALE Register for Free Prises to be given away Saturday, October 9 21 SPECIALS Receive a Free Gift when you visit us during our Grand Opening!
