Cedar Rapids Gazette (Newspaper) - March 10, 1974, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 6A Tho Cedar Rapids Gazette: Sun., March 1ft. 1974 Mi iii ii iii ii if It's the Humane Thing To Do By Susan Welsh Humane Society Auxiliary Once a pet dog or cat is lot out of the house, as opposed to being taken out, he becomes a straying animal. It is a fact that most of the dogs roaming the streets are not strays, but owned pots — straying. Any pet owner who allows his animal to run loose is not only mistreating his pet, he is breaking the law in areas that have leash laws. He also is showing a complete disregard and disrespect for his neighbors and residents of his community. The dog or cat that is given his “freedom” to run at large is not a happy pet, contrary to many pet owners’ beliefs. By stating that, an owner is merely trying to justify inconsiderate behavior and lack of care for his animal and the rights of his neighbors. Our pets are animals and therefore will behave as such. They will fight with one another, causing injuries to themselves and contact or transmit disease. They will breed unwanted litters which will have to be disposed of. Being used to people, they may lie friendly toward strangers who may be collecting dogs and cats to be sold for experimental purposes. The straying pet is subject to severe illness, painful injury and death from in jesting rat poison and insecticides or by being hit by a car. Animals have no sense of civic responsibility, therefore the straying pet cannot be blamed for traveling up and down the street, ripping open trash bags and littering garbage about on collection days. He does not realize that the neighbors across the street do not wish to have the lawn soiled or the shrubbery and flowers ruined by his running through them or digging. Yet his owner does have a sense of civic responsibility and wouldn’t dream of doing these things himself or allowing one of his children to do them. Besides doing injury to himself in traffic, the straying pet is the cause of many traffic accidents. He becomes an unexpected obstacle in the streets and as many drivers will try to avoid hitting an animal, they may cause another type of collision by doing so. The formation of dog packs is another hazard. City dogs do form packs because they are dogs and the dog is a pack animal. These packs terrorize people, bite, chase cars and bicycles and cause damage to property. Within the past two weeks there have been news items regarding the problems the stray dogs or straying dogs are | causing in Iowa towns. With spring coming, we will no doubt be seeing an increase in the number of pets running loose. It is time to place the blame where it belongs. Don’t blame the pet who has been given the run of the streets, for he did not make this decision. The responsible party is, of course, the person who owns the animal. Be a good citizen and a good pet owner — keep your pet confined The Linn County Humane society auxiliary meets the second Monday of each month at Peoples bank east at 7:30 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.
