Cedar Rapids Gazette (Newspaper) - March 6, 1974, Cedar Rapids, Iowa Journal of A Trip with Kissinger tty Wilbur I^andrry WASHINGTON (UPI ) -Traveling with Henry Kissinger is like traveling with a game of liars’ poker. This is no reflection on the quality of Kissinger’s diplomacy nor on the truth of the reporting by the newsmen running to keep up with him. It is the description of the game a group of five or six of the 14 reporters along on his Middle East mission play with the serial numbers on dollar bills in their few spare moments — waiting for Kissinger beside the pyramids, in the aisle of the airplane in flight, sitting in the reception room of the Al’Riassa palace in Riyadh. * * * The air force 707 is hardly in the air before Kissinger has donned his light blue traveling sweater and is back among the press seats to joke with his friends among the reporters. In a typical pose, his hand is in his waistband with a thumb hooked over his belt. One running joke is about Helmut Sonnenfeldt, the state department counselor who is one of Kissinger’s closest advisers. Kissinger likes to pretend that Sonnenfeldt, like Kissinger a German-born Jewish refugee from Nazism, is trying to get his job.* Sonnenfeldt has been measuring his state department office, Kissinger says, and will probably move in when he is away. Kissinger maintains he probably will not be able to get back into the country. * * * In Damascus, said to be the world’s oldest continuously inhabited city, it had been raining this winter for the first time in four years. The Barada, a stream beginning high in the anti-Lebanon mountains between the city and the sea, is full, and Damascus is the daughter of the Barada which gives life to its oasis. The crops will be good. * * * At a party in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmy got a noted Oriental (belly) dancer to dance for Kissinger. A pool report by the NBG correspondent described Kissinger’s reaction to her dance: . . A spotlight drilled the smoky cabaret air, and Najwa Fuad undulated out of the darkness in a scherezaidic costume. If you squinted it was Rita Hayworth. Nobody squinted. “The movements which followed defied verbal description. “Your secretary of state watched intently, almost stolidly, his face masking any impulses which may have made iiim wonder why Le Due Tho never brought him to a place like this. “His lap remained inviolate.’’ The last is a reference to one time when a dancer did sit on his lap. * * * Three or four hours sleep a night is almost the maximum for the staff and accompanying reporters and sometimes it is less. Baggage has to be outside of hotel room doors for pickup as early as 5:30 a in., hours before the plane leaves. That results in half-naked correspondents on occasion, they groggily having forgotten to hold out a shirt, or socks or underpants. You can spot these unhappy creatures climbing on the bus for the airport in the chill of early morning, wearing a raincoat wrapped tightly around them and an uncomfortable smile. * * * Riyadh, (he capital of Saudi Arabia, sits in the middle of the desert. From what we can see, there is little of the old mud-walled town left. Forms of modern concrete construction are rising everywhere, and there are traffic jams downtown at four in the afternoon. There is more oil here than any place else in the world. There are no lines in front of the gas stations. * * * Kissinger left his native tier- many as a Jewish refugee boy of 15 during the Nazi years. He has returned many times before, but this is the first as American secretary of state. In hts talks with German leaders, however, he si>eaks English and they sjM'ak German. His German is no longer up to precise formulation In1 explains. “If I speak to you in English,’’ he said in his airimrt statement. “it is because my vocabulary when I left Germany was better develojM’d for football than for international affairs." * * * The plane tykes off from Brussels for home. Kissinger will soon appear in his sweater, and in the back a game of liars’ poker is going on. The Cedar Rapids Gazette. Wed., Mar.
