ATHENS (Al*) Greece’* new military regime, in its thirl month of power, is cracking cJown hard on students and political opponents. Dissidents live in fear of the nighttime knock by security and military police. The civilian government the generals installed after they overthrew the previous military dictator, President George Pa padnpoulos, appears unsure of itself. Brig. Gen. Diinitrius loan* Hides, Hit* chief of the military police, is widely believed to be the real power behind the new president, Gen. Phaedon Gizi-kis. Hut Ioannides is never seen in public; opponents describe him as a man "who fears his own shadow and only moves by night.’’ People are beginning to grumble openly about the stagnant politieal situation, in-nation reflected in a III percent increase in consumer prices last year, and the price of gasoline, at $2.08 a gallon the highest in Europe. has been slow to surface. Opposition sources claim the camp is slowly filling up, with about 120 persons presently housed in bur then opposition to the regimeiracks that the International Red Cross once said were unfit for humans. Government officials and dis sidents refuse to bo identified when making statements or elal rn s. But this picture emerges: Scores of students have been arrested and have disappeared since anti government rioting by youths precipitated the end of Papadopoulos* 6‘/^-year-old regime. Police freely roam the capital’s three major institutions of higher learning — Athens university, the Polytechnic institute and the School of Commerce and Economics — searching students and taking them in for1 questioning. A number of students accused of taking part in the riots remain in hiding. The government has repeatedly said that only 13 persons died during the demonstrations. But students say at least 80 persons were shot down by police in the The Cedar Rapid* Gazette: Wed., I eh. 20. 1974 TIA streets of Athens and buried quietly. Doctors at two major suburban hospitals say many youths are still undergoing treatment for bullet wounds and other riot injuries. They also say many more died than the government admits. Two Greek journalists are being held on Yiaros for criticizing the regime. A Greek reporter for the German magazine Der Spiegel and for the West German broadcasting system was questioned by /military police last monlh.
