Canandaigua Daily Messenger (Newspaper) - May 5, 1971, Canandaigua, New York Page 6 Messenger, Canandatgua, N.Y. May Canandaigua Day Opens Finger Lakes Season ringer Lakes Race Track in nearby Farmlngton opened its tenth season of thoroughbred racing this afternoon with the first race getting underway at Nine races were being run with the opening day races being sponsored by Canandaigua merchants and the Greater Canandaigua Chamber of Commerce. Canandaigua Day has become a tradition oh opening day and again on closing day at the local oval. This season there will be 139 days of racing with the season coming to a close October 13. Besides the dally double on the first two races there will be three exact as each day with the exactas being held on the fifth, seventh and ninth races. General Manager William (Bill) Thayer, who replaces Luke O'Brien has worked overtime trying to get the track in shape for the opening with many new features that he feels the public will like. If work alone can do the job of winning over the buying public Thayer would 1 be a big winner as GM of the big Farmington layout. Another big field of horses are booked for Thursday races with the feature race being a six furlong claiming race for three year olds and up with a purse. Nine horses have been entered in this race with many old time favorites at Finger Lakes among the entries. Rocket Destroyer, Sky Loop, Sam Lord and Cracker jack are four thoroughbreds that have raced here for several years. There are hundreds of new thoroughbreds on hand with more checking in each day. This makes for full slates of horses and a better meet. CA Downs Penn Yan; Victor Over Geneva t International League Standings By United Press International W. L. Pet.
