Wade Iii staff reporter officer Anthony Joiner a 14-year Veteran of the East Cleveland police department died after a fatal car crash sunday afternoon. Police and paramedics responded to the crash on Terrace Road about 2 30 . Joiner was driving his red 2002 Chrysler Sebring East on Terrace Road when he lost control of the car at Stanwood Road. Police said joiners car struck the curb sending it airborne into a Metal Fence and a tree on private property. He was found unresponsive at the scene. Joiner was taken to University hospitals where he was pronounced dead. Reports said he was not wearing his seat Belt when the Accident happened. His Mother 67-year old Maxine Joiner was a passenger in the front seat. She is in critical condition at metro health medical Center. She was wearing a safety Belt. The reason Why Joiner lost control of his car remains under investigation. A Joiner was a very familiar face in East Cleveland i will miss him a lot a said East Cleveland mayor Gary Norton. Joiner was off duty at the time of the crash. In a statement released monday the East Cleveland police department said this about Joiner a officer Joiner was a 14-year Veteran of the East Cleveland police department who truly embodied the words integrity dedication and service to the Community. It is with great regret that we now must announce the untimely tragic passing of our fellow officer and Friend. Officer Joiner leaves behind not Only a thankful Community and police department but also a Beautiful daughter who must now come to grips with her father being unable to see her off to prom and walk her Down the aisle of marriage. Taylor Road in Cleveland Heights. Darius wills 27, was convicted of the fatal shooting of Smiley and sentenced to 18 years to life in prison. According to reports he fired 20 shots at the doorway of the bar. Back in february he pleaded guilty to murder and felonious assault. Jamahl Drake 28, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for his role in the shooting and was sentenced to 9 years in prison. He was set to testify against wills but did no to have to because of wills plea agreement. The third Man Anthony Hunt 23, pleaded guilty to attempted felonious assault and having a weapon under disability. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison. On sept. 20 last year two women were shot while standing outside of the double r bar and Grill. One of them was Smiley. According to Cleveland Heights police it happened a Little before 2 30 . Police were responding to a Call of shots fired at the bar. When they arrived they found the two women victims with gunshot wounds. Smiley was found on the sidewalk near the Entrance to the bar. The other woman Melena Roberson was found inside. Both women were taken to metro health medical Center on the City a West Side. Roberson was in stable condition As she was treated for her gunshot wound to the leg. However Smiley died shortly after arriving to the Hospital. She left behind a 5-year-old daughter. According to police the incident started from a disturbance Between a group of 6-8 males and a second group of patrons inside the bar. Security guards escorted the first group of men from the bar. Then a Short time after shots were fired striking the two women As they stood outside the bars Entrance. According to reports Smiley worked As a health information technician at a Center that helps female inmates reenter society. Roberson who is still recovering from her wound was studying to be a nurse. Because of her injury she will no longer be Able to pursue that dream.
