Chicago Bulletin (Newspaper) - August 22, 1963, Chicago, Illinois Page 6the bulletin thursday March 15, 1962 Rev. John Readye lenten meditation by Rev. John ready the Cross and Otto Freedom Quot he saved others himself he cannot save a mat 27-42 Freedom is a magic word it does something to the blood. This fact is painted up in America particularly in the South and also in Africa. Freedom turns citizens into patriots and sluggard into champions. There Are few other words which will stir men to such deeds of daring or will inspire such Zeal and enthusiasm As this word. What men have not Heen willing to sacrifice for it what crimes have Heen committed in its name if we Are As interested in Freedom As the sign of the times a would indicate it can not he without profit to look at the Cross that stands like some deep Gash in the flesh of human history As one who said a Eye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. And again if the son shall make you free be shall he free indeed. And yet he ended on a Cross having forfeited even the Freedom to live. That is the startling fact which we All need to know. Christ who men free was not free himself. We All know that this is a period of Church year for sorrow for self discipline for fasting and prayer for confessions and repentance. In Many sections of our country and world Lent is preceded by weeks and Days of Celebration and pleasure seeking culminating in Tho orgies of Mardi gras the Day before Ash wednesday. The people must have their last fling before the season of penitence begins. When Lent is Over there is a great Relief in the souls of Manv. Now they can cease their fasting and their self discipline. Now they can return to their Normal living and their Normal sinning with a Good conscience. They have fulfilled their lenten obligations and the merciful lord will look through his fingers at their sins and vices for a time. He knows too that soon another Lent will come around and they will again repay him with penitence for All the evil they have done since last easter. Now we ask the inevitable question Why was it that he could not save himself we All shall of course be facing one of the Central questions involving our c Hristian Faith. It is one of the glories of the i Enten season that will not permit us to be diverted by Little issues. The great facts of our Faith look upon us from every incident and every word. We must give some answer to them even though they be feeble ones. The first answer then will have to be that men put him there. It was by their decision that he Hung on the Cross. They could not stand his presence. He bothered them by his holiness. He condemned them for their selfishness their Lilleness and their Loveless Ness even without speaking words of condemnation. The second answer seems to demand that god put him there. Perhaps our human reason staggers at that fact. We sometimes wonder Why things happen to us our health sometimes fails. We lose our loved ones. It almost seems in defense of god As though it were an unrighteous thing in him to leave Jesus Only the alternative of the Cross. We shall attempt no such defense. We shall Only remind ourselves that a god was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself. 4tl and the father Are one. God was no Idle Spectator As were the Pagan gods of ancient Greece. He was involved in it for us and our salvation. Once Jesus said a i am come not to do mine own will but the will of him who sent me and in that includes the Way of the Cross. He would not forfeit the Victory to save himself. He loved too much to Compromise with loss. A thanks be unto god who liveth the Victory t h r o u g h our lord Jesus Christ. Of such bondage was Freedom born. Church notes a Park Manor Christian Church Rev. Adolphus Ross will Bel Woodlawn . Church worship services will be held Kuest speaker in worship serv a Woodlawn . An appendectomy is not a serious operation but it can become one if the appendix has already ruptured and peritonitis has set in. Therefore it is important for people to seek medical assistance and attention in All instances of persistent pain in the Abdomen and to refrain from taking laxatives to relieve the symptoms.
