Jameson s Philo Normeal journal tar Ajril 1625 tie family is very numerous. Pennon s synopsis contains 812 species l-2flth part of All the Jiunta therein enumerated. In the system of rower and Schultz there Are 1800 Anil this work it brought to a in Mclau would Prol ably contain in ill it lady is assumed Tomt tie grasses form a put. It is More than probable however that in future the grasses will increase in a larger ratio than the other Phaner Ogami plants and that the just proportion will be As 1 to 20, or As 1 to 10. Greater still will be Elwir proportion to vegetation in a Uncial when the null our of individuals is taken Inlo account for in this respect greater numbers nay perhaps the whole of the other classes arc inferior. With regard to locality a such a Large family very in tic can be advanced. Among the grasses there Are both land and water but no Marine plants. Uliey occur in every soil in of others and alone the last to such a Ile Groo to occupy considerable districts. Sand appear to be less favourable to this class but even Toh s has species nearly Peculiar to itself. The diffusion of this family has almost no other limit Titan those of the whole vegetable kingdom. Grasses occur under the Equator and Sigida .1 species of was one of the few plants which Hupps met with in Spitsbergen. On the mountains of the South of Europe a kind of Blue grass and of lick grasses extend almost to the Snow line and on Andes this is also the Case with Jiva Malu Tenett and Lac Tydes Neyemia Rigi jul a Aryntha the latter a Spe cies of the Hurt Bulion is of greater importance. At y the chief group and species Ali or distribution will not attain a real interest until we shall lie in Possession of a perfect natural clips if Catlon for in this respect we arc in my opinion still far behind. Tie division of Beau appears to inc too artificial and in that of Crown tie groups panic cars barn grass and Jwa Cree arc too Large. The Besl perhaps is that of in nah according to which tie grasses Are arranged under ten groups. In respect to latitude the relation of the grasses in the sys tem of Komer and scam Lutcs in tie hot and temperate zones is the following of the panic a arc found in the torrid none 303 species in the temperate 103 species. Of the slip Acea Feather grass 40 species in the torrid and 58 in tie temperate. Cd the Are mentioned in tin hot regions 58 species and 220 in the temperate. Greatest differences Between tropical and Citra tropical grasses appear to be the Fol lowing the tropical grasses acquire a much greater Hight and occasionally assume the appearance of Trees. Some species of Bam Busa Are from 50 to co feet High. 2. The leaves of tie tropical grasses arc broader and approach More in form to those of other families of plants. Flo Cua soft grass is perhaps the Only extra tropical Genus with separate stamens and pistils. "4. The Flowers Are softer More downy and a tempt. "5. The extra tropical grasses on the contrary far surpass the tropical in respect of the number of individuals. That compact Grassy turf which especially in tie colder parts of tie emigrate zones in Spring and summer com potes the Green Meadows and pastures is Al most entirely wanting in the torrid zone. The grasses there in not grow crowded together but like other plants mow even in the Southern Paru of Europe the assimilation to the warmer regions in this respect is by no Means income Derau a undo do Wax by its bight reminds to of inc bum Boa nac Harum at Oak ii Charm ten Riffas Imperata Arun Din Fly to id Runn Partum and the specks of by their soft downy ele Gant Flowers and the species of Antr Pogon tag soft sk., by separate stamens and pistils exhibit tropical qualities. The grasses Are also Lew gregarious and Meadows Serdomer occur in the South than in the North of Europe. The same is likewise True As regards the United states since throughout the Northern states we often see very extensive Meadows and Tures Well adapted to the keeping of cattle and sheep but in the Southern states Meadows and pastures Are comparatively rare since their place is occupied by Fields of Cotton Rice to Taco Maine and sugar Cane As to what relates to Tho distribution of in do rituals the generality of species Are social Molanus. We wish to know How this family is distributed in respect of the number of Spades and where they reach their Maxima and minimal the following materials May Supply not indeed either a Complete or faithful because the bonuses Are no treated of by botanists or travellers in general r Woltti the same care As the other families but they will at least give some hints towards effecting that object.
