Forest fires keep hundreds out of homes in Alberta, Sask.
RED EARTH CREEK, Alta. — About 700 people from several small hamlets in northern Alberta will have to stay out of their homes for at least two more days due to a forest fire being fanned by hot, dry winds.
Residents of the Peerless Lake-Trout Lake area were bused out of their homes Wednesday night when the fire threatened to cut off the only access road to the communities, said Rick Moyse, fire information officer for Alberta Sustainable Resources.
“I don’t want to give false hopes,” Moyse said.
‘‘But it’s our hope that within a couple of days that we will have control on that fire and the nsk won’t exist.”
About 300 were staying at an arena in
Red Earth Creek, with the rest staying at the community hall and school, said David Zabot, deputy reeve of the municipal district of Opportunity.
“We’re scrambling, no lying about that, We effectively tripled the size of Red Earth overnight,” Zabot said.
Seniors and pregnant women were ensconced at oil and gas camps, where they have some privacy in small rooms with beds, Zabot said.
“Like a Japanese hotel room, it’s very small. It has a single bed, shared bathrooms and showers, but it’s very clean, the food is good and you get a private room with a bed, so that works out not too bad.”
The oil and gas workers have no work due to the forest fires, Zabot added, so
the companies are allowing firefighters and some of the evacuees to stay at the camps.
Zabot said they were getting supplies by “begging, borrowing or stealing,” but they can’t even take any more volunteers because they are running out of places for them to stay.
“People are excellent as far as the evacuation goes, but people are worried about their homes and wondered when they are going to get back,” he said.
Evacuees were passing the time by watching television, drinking coffee and visiting while the kids played outside, Zabot said.
“For right now people are content but I sure hope this doesn’t go on for more than a couple of days, because anybody
would grow very frustrated.”
The fire near Peerless Lake, about 450 kilometres north of Edmonton, was relatively small — only 150 hectares — but had crept within 1.5 kilometres of the hamlet yesterday, Moyse said.
The fire is part of two others burning in the area that officials have dubbed the Peerless Lake Complex.
“It’s the No. I priority in the province in terms of allocation of resources,” Moyse said.
A fireguard was mostly completed around the hamlet yesterday and water bombers were dropping water on the fire non-stop.
In Saskatchewan, 115 workers at Camera's MacArthur River uranium mine had to leave yesterday when a for
est fire came to within four kilometres of the site. The workers from the mine, about 700 kilometres north of Saskatoon, were bused to Key Lake.
“So far the fire seems to be okay, but we’re not taking any chances,” said company spokesman Jamie Mclntrye.
About 60 workers, along with provincial firefighters, stayed behind to battle the blaze, which has blackened about 150 square kilometres.
Farther south, about 130 people from Pelican Narrows, about 525 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, were bused to Prince Albert due to heavy smoke from a nearby forest fire.
Those who left were the elderly, mothers with small children and people with respiratory problems. — CP
