When it comes to summer drinks, waters still best

TORONTO — The only thing better than a long bike ride on a hot summer’s day is a cool refreshing beer. Or maybe an iced latte. No definitely a fizzy lemonade — not too tart and not too sweet.
It seems that during sultry summers, thirst takes hold often and reaching for a delicious beverage is the answer. But the truth is, by the time you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated and at risk of heat exhaustion. And if you consistently reach for something other than water, you may not be doing yourself any good.
When it comes to thirst-quenchers, water is the winner.
lf you plan on any outdoor activity or exercise, the Canadian Athletic Therapists’ Association recommends proper hydration to stay healthy and maintain a high level of performance. That includes drinking at least 250 millilitres of water before getting started, 125-250 ml every 15-20 minutes during the workout and 500 ml for every pound of weight loss after the activity.
The association also recommends that if the exercise is intense or lasts longer than 45-50 minutes, a sports drink containing six to eight per cent carbohydrates should be consumed during the activity.
While the study was geared towards athletes, Maggie Kayes, a member of the association, said the study is also valid for people such as construction workers, mail carriers or “anyone out in the heat being active.”

and electrolytes — those tiny ions in our bodies that regulate the electric charge and flow of water molecules — water is absolutely the best drink, said Anne Kennedy, president of the National Institution of Nutrition.
“Water... as opposed to other beverages, particularly carbonated beverages, which don’t have the same thirst quenching qualities,” Kennedy said from Ottawa. “You also have to watch out for beverages that contain caffeine because it has a diuretic effect and alcoholic beverages dehydrate.”
“It’s not that you can’t have an iced latte, it’s just that you don’t want to be having 12 a day,” said Kennedy, a dietician who keeps a glass of water at her desk even if “it isn’t the freshest.”
“If you don’t like water, find something you do like that is non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic,” said Kayes, who
added that most fruit juices and drinks have a high sugar content •• , slows down fluid absorption.

to bring distant objects into focus, otherwise his distance vision will be blurred.
When a child develops nearsightedness, the condition usually becomes worse as he grows older. The problem may increase only
slightly each year,
but often the change is great enough to require new glasses to keep his vision dear.
Once the child has grown up, how-ever, there is usually a leveling off, and his glasses will not have to be changed as often.
Parents need to be especially aware of their children’s vision so they can detect any problems at the earliest possible age, when they can be corrected. Young children, in particular, may have vision problems and not be aware of them.
That’s why eye examinations for children are recommended as early as age three.

How would you feel if you were suffering from the nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP) but your doctor said you must grin and hear it? Because there wasn't any safe drug available to light this condition. And later you discover he was wrong.
You’d have every right to be annoyed. Particularly if your illness had forced a termination of the pregnancy-
Mild forms of NVP adversely affect the quality of life for the patient and her family. But severe cases known as hyperemesis gravidarum can lead to dehydration
and electrolyte imbalance which can be life-threatening.
Morning sickness has been a problem for women for ages. It affects an many as 50 per cent of pregnant women. And a variety of “voodoo tactics” have been employed in an effort to stop this disorder.
A report in The Medical Post claims that the Roman physician Soranus recommended that pregnant women with morning sickness punch a leather bag. lf that failed her arms and legs should be bound and she be dunked in hot water! One wonders what fee he charged for that advice!

Fortunately today there are humane and safe measures to treat morning sickness. Diclectin, an anti-nausea drug, is available in Canada and contains IO milligrams (mg) of Vitamin B6 and IO mg of doxylamine succinate. But it is not being fully utilized by physicians.
The recommended dose for daytime nausea and vomiting is two tablets at bedtime, one in the morning and another mid-afternoon. But, if symptoms emerge only in the morning two tablets at bedtime are usually sufficient.
Diclectin is not available in the U.S. But it is possible to get basically the same result by taking a tablet of Vit B6 along with “Unisom” which contains doxylamine succinate.
Unfortunately surveys show a grim picture of the medical management of this condition. As many as one-third of pregnant women are not being informed about the safety of Diclectin. It’s usually due to the ignorance of medical staff in believing that common anti-nausea drugs cause birth defects. Or not realizing that Diclectin is the only drug approved by Health Canada for NVP.
