USE SUN WANT ADS!Dispute erupts over cause of jetliners’ collision
UEBERLINGEN, Germany — A Russian pilot ferrying children to Spain for a beach vacation had less than a minute to get out of the way of an oncoming cargo jet, but the planes rammed into one another after both apparently took the same evasive action at the same moment.
The collision killed 71, including the Canadian co-pilot of the cargo plane.
Fifty-two Russian children were on the Bashkirian Airlines charter heading for a resort near Barcelona to celebrate the beginning of the summer holiday. Their chartered Tupolev 154 collided at 10,670 metres over southern Germany with a cargo jet operated by DHL International.
There were no casualties on the ground, although burning wreckage fell onto roads and into yards in the hills around Lake Constance, shared by Germany, Switzerland and Austria There was immediate controversy over how the collision happened.
Swiss authorities — whose control system was directing both flights initially said the Russian pilot responded only after three warnings, the first com ing two minutes before the crash. It was subsequently learned that only one Swiss controller was on duty at the time.
After the Swiss offered their initial version of the moments leading up the accident, German aviation and police officials said the Russian pilot had only 51)
seconds’ warning and responded after a second call from air traffic control 25 seconds before the crash.
The Swiss then revised their account. Aition iviaag, chief of the Zurich control lower, said the 50-second warning given the Russian pilot “wasn’t irresponsible hui fairly tight.”
A representative of the German airline pilots’ union disagreed.
"Normally we count on five to IO minutes for two planes heading for a planned crossing of their flight paths to be separated,” Georg Fongem told ZDF TV “Of course we must ask why the two planes were not brought apart earlier.” The pilot of the DHL jet apparently sent the plane into a dive after the
Boeing’s automated crash avoidance warning system alerted him to the danger about 25 seconds beforehand.
The Russian airline blamed the tragedy on air traffic controllers, and defended its pilot, saying he was an experienced aviator, spoke English — the language of international aviation — well and was a regular on international routes.
Co-pilot predicted he’d die happy in a plane
VANCOUVER — Brant Campioni cheerfully predicted during his IO years as a pilot that he’d die happy if he died in the air.
It’s been the only consolation his devastated family has taken after the cargo plane he was co-piloting slammed mid-air into a Russian plane foil of vacationing school children.
“He loved what he did,” said his sister, Leslie Dion, her voice cracking with emotion.
“His famous words were that ‘lf I am to die in

The cargo plane was a Boeing 757 owned by DHL package delivery service, based in Brussels, Belgium, and San Francisco. It was Hying from Bahrain to the company’s huh in Brussels.
Dion said she doesn’t know much about what happened. Instead, Dion said in an interview yesterday, she’s focusing on looking after her family, particularly her mother. Campioni’s father and grandmother died earlier this year.
“I grieve so much for my mom I can’t even

she’s been through. Her mother, her husband,
now this,” said Dion.
Brant Campioni, 35, grew up in North Vancouver. He was trained IO years ago as a pilot at a college in Abbotsford. He flew for Air B.C. before leaving three years ago to work for DHL in Bahrain.
He was engaged to a woman from Fort St. John, B.C. The couple had been living in Bahrain and planned to make their home there after their wedding next year, Dion said.
a Bashkirian Airlines representative in Moscow, said chief pilot Alexander Gras, 52, had flown for 31 years.
