Boston Jesuit (Newspaper) - March 12, 1831, Boston, Massachusetts20 the Jesuit. Vol. Ii. True. It is notorious that Luther anathema sized Calvin and All the other reformers that Calvin anathema sized Luther and the rest and caused Servetus to be Burnt As a heretic that they nil anathema sized one another and that to ibis Day the followers of each respective sect consider their own religion As the Only True one and Anat Hamelic All the rest. Y of know that this has been and now is the tact and consequently you know that All parties Are convinced that the difference Between the reformed churches As they Are called is in essentials and not in Church government alone. There is Only one Point in which All Igrec and that is hostility to the Catholic Church. This is their Only Point of Union. And can it be supposed that the unchangeable spirit of truth requires no other Point of Union than this and that when this hostility is planted in the mind lie has done the great work and after that leads one to one religion and another to another As to an object of no great importance no sir you cannot say it. In fact you do not say it to Uny other but to a Catholic. Among yourselves you acknowledge that your different Reli ions Are different modes of Faith and you Celare your conviction that one of them Only can be True because there can be Only one True , sir this being the Case the following incontrovertible conclusion must be drawn from it that As there is Only one True Faith and As the spirit of truth will not Lead any one to any other than the True Faith they Only Are led by him who become members of this True Church and that All the others whatever their pretensions May be arc led by no other than by their own imaginations and by the spirit of error. Prove to me if you can that this conclusion is not sound. Proceeding therefore upon this to what dangers shall 1 not be exposed if i undertake to form my own system of belief 1 May study and study Pray and Pray and at last form erroneous conclusions and adopt a wrong system for it is Clear that the special assistance or guidance of the spirit is not received by every one. Of sir this is leading me into an abyss of doubts and perplexities and labors. And is it in this manner that every one Learned and unlearned Rich and poor the Independent gentleman and the Labouring Mechanic the Man of great abilities and the Man of the weakest abilities is to be directed does this Shew Forth the Wisdom of god docs this Shew Forth his ardent solicitude for the salvation of Man is this the w a in which even fools May walk and not err and yet according to the principle avowed by you As the leading principle of the protestant religion this is the Only Means of coming to a know ledge of the truth and of discovering the mysteries of Faith. I will again quote your own words As the pro Ola the liable the Bible alone is the religion of protestants. Hence they nil without exception claim it As their birth right to search the scriptures for themselves and resist with indignation every attempt let it be made by what Man or body of men it might to Rob them of that inestimable privilege. The opposite sentiment to this sir is to be continued the Jesuit. Boston Mahoh-12, 1831. Our readers will perceive in the following extract of a letter which we have received from an intelligent and zealous Friend to the cause of truth in other instance of the pitiful and iniquitous expedients to which the Bible and tract jobbers resort to obtain proselytes from the Catholic Church. It is lamentable to think How far such persons can thus degrade themselves by practising satan like upon the necessities of their fellow beings by holding out the mammon of iniquity even to children Asun equivalent for their Apost Ney from the religion of Christ. Persons who arc As destitute fan Ordinary or extraordinary Mission As were Ever Luther and Calvin themselves when in All the impiety of corrupt nature they wantonly in weighed against the established Laws morality and religion of Christendom and heat up for recruits from among the most profligate and licentious of the human family. Is it not a matter of just astonishment that the intelligent and virtuous people of the United states will countenance a set of men who arrogantly calling themselves orthodox ministers stoop to the abominable and kidnapping Means of seducing children of a different persuasion from the path of purity and peace to the by ways of destruction base indeed must be the heart and unti Christian the cause of him who plays Oft such vile and infamous \ practices. It we shall thank our respectable correspondent to acquaint us with the name of the mock orthodox minister and of the predestined family who have been accomplices in this diabolical business. We wish for the Benefit of All whom it May concern to bold them to the merited contempt of every Libe Rul and Cligh cued member of when calvinistic ministers cannot propagate their doctrine by convincing the understanding of their follow citizens by the Force of reason and evangelical truth when instead of using such just and honorable Means they have recourse to satanic cunning Auti Cath die calumny and unqualified falsehoods we should say it is time for them to close their floret retire from business or embark in something else which May become industrious useful and honorable men. Detroit feb. 23, 1ss1. A a it seems that the spirit of intolerance and hatred Are growing More bitter than they Over were in this part of the United slates. Every cunning artifice is resorted to by the Bible ministers to prejudice the minds of the american people More and More against our holy Church. To convince you of this fact i will relate to you a circumstance which took Wilace in this City last a ring. It is pretty i Well known that the generality of the Irish emigrants to this country Are very they arc therefore obliged to hire by the Dav or Mouth As soon As they arrive in this place and As there Are but few catholics who Are Able to hire them they arc compelled to engage with protestants but to their Honor let it be said they arc Well treated by the most of them but there Are too Many who ridicule them for their firm adherence to their religion and use All the Means in their Power to persuade them to abandon it. Vet with All their endeavours they have succeeded but in one instance arid the following Are the particulars which May be relied on for their veracity. A Young girl of shout sixteen years of age was placed by her parents to work in the House of a protestant indy of this City who is by the Bye a rank presbyterian the Yonng girl had not been there but a Short time before she begin to give Way to the persuasions which were employed by these detestable people to have her renounce going to catechism and go to their sunday school where she could be instructed in the principles of christianity As Well As the Catholic Church but her parents were a great preventative to their Success for they were very careful in obliging her to Goto confession and catechism. But circumstances obliged her parents to remove from this part of the country an 1 leave her in the posses Don of those protestants who at last prevailed upon her to abandon her religion which she did in the following manner. It is not certainly known whether she or they were the inventors of the following scheme in order to justify her leaving the Church however they were very Busy in circulating the circumstances which caused her departure from the Church the girl it seems had gone to confession and not being Able to be admitted just at the time she went the Rev. Or. Kelly our Catholic priest told her to return next morning but instead of returning she went Home saying that tho Rev. Or. Kelly had told her that to satisfy for her sins she should come the next morning and ire would a cow hide her a she had no sooner invented this abominable lie than it spread a most the protestants with the greatest rapidity the moment heard of it i immediately went and informed him of the report but he did appear much surprised at it although he had expected it for some time. She has Ever since been a constant attendant at their sunday school and but Little Hopes Are that she will Ever return to the True Lailah. The members of the Bible society have been distributing bibles during the last week amongst catholics. I shall inform myself of their proceedings and write a communication for a the Jesuit As soon As 1 shall have obtained More particulars on this subject.?. The ladies and gentlemen of Boston Ara respectfully informed that the next lecture will be Given in the Church of the a a holy Cross a at half past six of clock on sunday evening next by the right Rev. Bishop Fenwick and that arrange mints will be made so As to obviate the necessity of their remaining without doors for any length of time. The doors will be thrown open immediately after vespers and the committee of
