Interest increasing. Interest for swimming at Indiana has been growing steadily in the past two years and an honorary swimming fraternity the Sigma rho Tau was founded last summer. The interest shown Here is not up to the Par of the other universities especially the East pm schools which have compulsory courses in swimming. Harvard requires each graduate to be perfected in the Art of swimming so As to swim a distance of 200 Yards. Purdue is the Only University in this state that has swimming As a compulsory course. Compulsory for teachers. In the general reorganization of the athletic department at Indiana educational students both men and women Are required to take a theoretical and applied course in swimming and it is hoped by the athletic authorities that a similar plan will be adopted for All students in the near future. Lowell Boggs Lowell Boggs is another to a dilate for a position in the line who Grill put up some Strong opposition for his competitors. He played guard on the 1918 eleven and was known As one of the most conscientious and hard working men on the squad. Wilbur Dalzen Wilbur Dalzell pictured above has played his last game. He was a dependable player and prominent in All branches of athletic Endeavor. He is to become coach of the har Risburg 111. High school teams. Maynard. Maynard May or May not be with the Crimson this year. It is doubtful whether he will return to school. He is a line crushing Backfield Man. Ordinarily Maynard s absence would prove a serious blow to the squad but the wealth of material this year makes his promised failure to return of less moment. Anderson Bach who plays end and Warner will be among the former stars of freshman squads who will be Back next year. Among the most promising of these former freshman players is Frank Hanny who was a Star end on the freshman team of 1916. Hanny just recently returned from overseas service in Italy in addition to being an excellent Man at end Hanny is a punter of exceptional ability. Mathys who was a quarterback on the 1917 freshman team is an All Wisconsin Man having played a year of football at Ripon College before coming to Indiana. He is expected to make a Good showing during the coming season. The 1919 football squad will be boosted by the return of the members of the s. A. T. C. Team. These men gained valuable experience in the will be a Strong contender for the conference Honor this year. Michigan will have an excellent team this year and Many Are predicting that coach Yost s men will make a hard fight for the big ten championship. Indiana s Outlook blight. Conkle will be the contribution of the 1916 eleven to the 1919 squad. Pope who served As Captain in the army played end. Wiley the Center was a lieutenant and saw service in France. Davis Beck and Conkle were in the service. Davis is a quarterback. Beck is a Center and Conkle is a guard. W. E. Beam who was a lineman on coach child s 1913 team will be Back in school this fall. Of the men who played on the 1917 team and who will be seen again this fall in Crimson uniforms Harold Boer is a guard Elliott Risley is an end Bernard Cravens is a quarterback Roscoe Quot cow Quot Minton is an end Harold Keever is a fullback Frank Faust is a quarterback Quot babe Quot Pierce is a Center and James Quot Jass Quot Ingles is a tackle. The Indiana Backfield will be materially strengthened by the addition of Russell Williams who plays a Good game at halfback. Ben Ross will also be in school next year and will be in the race for a line position. Phares Hiatt Hiatt is one of the Veteran Backfield men in coach Stiehm s big squad who will again Don the Moleskin this fall. Hiatt is fast and a dodger. He is always in the fight which advantage gained him three broken ribs in 1916 and a broken right hand in 1917. But injuries never failed to keep him out of the game.
