A unique method of dealing with drunkards has been developed by Justice Smith of Burlington J. The new York Herald gives one of his recent sentences inflicted upon a confirmed Toper. The ease of a Man named Burr had puzzled the magistrate for several weeks. The workhouse and the jail did not do the poor fellow any Good. In the meanwhile an evangelist had come to town and was holding three Temperance meetings a week. This was the Justice Cue. The drunkard reeled up to the bar of Justice for sentence. A Charles Burr a said the modern Daniel a i herewith deliver you into the custody of evangelist Dennis under whose direction i command you to repair thirty times in succession to certain Temperance meetings held in the City and county of Burlington. Should you fail to attend such meetings you shall serve one Day in jail for each failure to do and i hereby command All constables to arrest you and bring your body to this court in the event of your # v my failure to attend the meetings Burr was put in the evangelist hands. His hands and face were washed he was shaved and made his first appearance that night at the Temperance gathering in clean Linen. What coercion had failed to do the kindly attention of sympathetic religious people accomplished. The hopeless drunkard not Only promised to Reform but has made a determined and successful Effort to Reform. A i an proud to say said Burr with tears in his eyes some time after his unique sentence a that my thirst for liquor has left me. I thank magistrate Smith from the Bottom of my heart for the sentence he this is Only another illustration of the same old truism which lawmakers Are beginning to take account of that kindness is better than harshness and severe discipline and love is the surest reformer. If scientists continue to make discoveries in Hygiene there will soon be nothing which a Man with Ordinary care for his health will feel he can do for safety. We have been told and Are none the better for it that there is Bacilli in the water we drink germs in our food and microbes in the air. Now comes a great French savant with the astonishing theory that we Are sleeping wrong he says that to sleep in the old fashioned Way with one head on a Pillow is simply to invite disease and death this May be True As undoubtedly More people die in bed with pillows under their Heads than any other Way. The proper Way to have a bed made declares the French scientist is to Haye the Pillow placed under the feet. In this Way the sleep will be More refreshing it will be found Acure for insomnia and a vast Benefit to those afflicted with lung troubles. This is an interesting suggestion but people should beware How they try it. A great scientist May go to bed with his feet on the Pillow and his head in a hollow of the mattress but an Ordinary Man would be inspected of having been out at Lodge too late and of not knowing what he was about when he went to bed.
