Blackfoot News (Newspaper) - January 18, 1896, Blackfoot, IdahoSplit in Republican caucus. Washington. Jan. 8.?the Republican Senate caucus split wide open on the House Tari it Bill to Day and into such a Row did the senators get that the meeting ended in bitter personal altercation and hopeless division of sentiment. The object of the caucus was to instruct the Republican majority of the finance committee to report the House Tariff Bill to the Senate without amendment and then to pledge the Republican senators not to Amend the measure in the open Senate. The first proposition was stated first. There was much dissatisfaction expressed but it was pressed to a vote and a majority voted in favor of it. The Western senators voted no. Then the other proposition was taken up. It was taken up. It was stated to the meeting and John Sherman who presided left the chair and installed in his place the venerable Hoar of Massachusetts. The Ohio senator then appealed to the republicans for unit of action and insisted that for the proper morality and discipline of the party it was necessary to pass it without apy amendment whatever. This brought or. Dubois of Idaho to the floor and he announced that he spoke for the Silver senators. He said that no Tariff Bill could pass this Congress or any succeeding Congress that did not carry As a Side partner a Bill providing for the unlimited coinage of Silver. He said that the Silver republicans of the West had decided to part company with their Eastern Brethren and that if the Eastern men wanted Tariff Bills and High Protection they must concede the unlimited coinage of Silver to the Western men. Dubois was backed up in this statement by Teller Hansbrough Wolcott Carter Mantle Warner and in fact All the free coinage senators from the Northwest. Senator Mitchell of Oregon stated that he should join the Silver forces in the Effort to secure the adoption of the free coinage substitute for the House Bond Bill but that with the Silver question disposed of in that connection he would advise that the Silver republicans refrain from participating in any Effort that might be made to Amend the Tariff Bill by adding a free coinage provision unless the Bond Bill should fail. Senator Carter followed in the same line of argument advising United action on the part of the Silver republicans in opposition to such an amendment in the event of the previous passage of the Silver substitute for the Bond Bill. Lie said that he thought their action on the Bond Bill would be a sufficient indication to the country of their attitude. He said however that he would not oppose such an amendment by his vote in Case of failure to secure concerted and unanimous action by his Silver colleagues but urged them to agree to this line of action.
