Apr using a method that was tried and discarded decades ago psychologists say they Are successfully treating acute chronic depression with sex hormones. Because of the initial failures using hormones to treat psychiatric disorders the psychologists say a wide professional prejudice developed against the method. But the researchers say they think they know what went wrong with those first experiments and the new successful results have stimulated a renewed interest in the treatment. Drs. Donald m. Brover Man and William Vogel of Worcester state Hospital previously reported decreased depression with few Adverse Side effects in women treated with Large doses of the female hormone oestrogen. Subsequent treatment of women at the Hospital and on an outpatient basis reaffirm these positive results the researchers said last week at a conference at the Worcester foundation for experimental biology. Continuing their collaboration with two scientists from the Worcester foundation drs. Edward l. Klaiber and Yutaka Kobayashi the psychologists have begun hormone treatment with depressed men using the male hormone testosterone. Quot so far the results with males look quite Good but so far we be treated just seven or eight patients Quot Vogel said. Quot we Are reluctant to say the results Are As definite As reported with women because we be treated so few men Quot he continued Quot but we have been encouraged enough to believe it s Wise to continue with Broverman says he and his colleagues Are succeeding while others failed because the new treatment uses far greater doses piously tried. The Large doses Are used to overcome what the research ers discovered to be hormonal resistance in the body. Quot simply giving a hormone does t mean everyone s body will use it Quot Broverman said. The researchers found out that some bodies stockpile hormones without breaking them Down and some persons simply need More hormones than previously believed to get the desired reaction. Broverman said the hormone treatments works by inhibiting the production of an enzyme called Mono Amine oxidase a Mao. The enzyme is found in higher than Normal Levels in both male and female depressed persons and is known to restrict another enzyme that stimulates nerve action he said. In females when natural oestrogen is highest in the body during the menstrual Cycle Mao concentration goes Down. And when Mao is up and oestrogen is lower before menstruation Normal women sometime complain of nervousness fatigue and mild depression Broverman said. The researchers say they use natural hormones extracted from animals in the treatments and that these have not been linked with any serious Side j o Boyle birth Lee Gordon o Boyle son of or. And mrs.
