Big Stone Gap Post (Newspaper) - September 11, 1918, Big Stone Gap, Virginia Peninsula Enterprise John w. Edmonds editor and owner. Too Oman court House. A. Entered at the poet office at Accomac o. H.,. As second class matter. Saturday August 14, 1909. Democratic ticket. A for governor William h. Mann. For lieutenant governor j. Taylor Ellyson. For attorney general Samuel w. Williams. The names of the candidates placed at the head of our columns today Are the nominees of the democratic primary and it goes without saying that they will have our Hearty endorsement and will receive our Earnest support. They Are entitled to it because of the pledge we gave when we participated in the primary it is due to them for the still better reason that each and everyone of them is qualified to fill the position to which he aspires and will do it in a Way that will be a credit to himself and in the Best interest of the people of the old state. The name of the Nomi Nee of commissioner of agriculture does not appear in the list with the others because the Choice of the candidate for that office is still in doubt and the contest Likely to follow. The name of this one will appear later which from the official count of the vote of the state is shown to be the Winner. And we doubtless voice in the above the sentiment of All the dec. Erotic voters of the Eastern Shore. As the news Leader an anti Mann paper says As a matter of political Good Faith we ought to Aid is we can in the election of the ticket the. Majority of our fellow citizens have seen fit to select. As a matter of business we should do All we can to avoid the disturbance confusion and obstruction to Progress that would be caused by the election of Republican state officers. Good humor Good sense Manly Frank and straightforward acceptance of the results of the game in which we have played magnanimity and Square dealing will solve All the Little problems left to us and carry us safely through All the dangers of dissension indifference and resentment remaining from the primary. The United states Senate on thurs Day of last week ratified the conference report on the Tariff Bill which had previously been adopted by the House. Within a few minutes of its final Pas Sage the Bill was signed by president Taft. Thus the Dingley Tariff is succeeded by the Payne Aldrich Taft Tariff. The new Law went into effect on Friday August 6th. The associated press dispatches Tell us that president Taft was in High spirits As he awaited the presentation of the Bill to him for his signature and that he joked merrily with senator Aldrich and others who were present. He perhaps can afford to joke. But 1 the masses who will find the Cost of the necessities of life increased instead of reduced As a result of the new Law 1 May not find the situation so humorous. 1 that the president has a premonition of the people s shocking Lack of appreciation of the joke perpetrated upon them is shown by the fact that he deemed it necessary to go into a lengthy but a lame defense or apology for his action in signing the Bill. He admits that the measure is not a com plete compliance with the promises made but declares there have been very few increases in rates and doubt less Hopes that the people will forget and forgive. Will they the indications do not Point in that direction. With the Cost of living soaring and no proportionate increase of the Means of the average family it cannot be expected that the treachery of or. Taft s party and the complaisant acquiescence of the smiling executive in the repudiation of party pledges will go a rebuked. The Day of reckoning should be near. Hon. Harry St. George Tucker the Defeated candidate for the gubernatorial nomination in the recent democratic primary accepts cheerfully the ver dict of the voters and will stand by the party the Staunton Leader. The following written statement has been Given by him to the press for publication now that the result of the primary 5 has been definitely ascertained i can not fail to express to my friends in the state of Virginia who so loyally sup ported me my sincere appreciation of the Honor they did me in expressing their preference for me As the demo cratic Standard bearer. I feel sure that in so doing they were Labouring for what they believed to be the Best interests of the democratic party in Vir Ginia and i earnestly Hope they will join with me in continuing for demo cratic Success through which alone i believe the Best interests of Virginia can be Subserve. Believing As i do in the integrity of democratic Princi Ples i shall most heartily lend my Best efforts to the election of the ticket that has just been selected in the re cent primary and wherever i can serve my party and its nominees in the com ing contest i shall most cheerfully do Alabama the first of the states in alphabetical order has set Good exam pie for her sister commonwealths by speedily ratifying the amendment to the Constitution paving the Way for an income tax.
