Big Stone Gap Post (Newspaper) - August 5, 1908, Big Stone Gap, Virginia Jfe la Uhalu Itu Utpal tax Accomac court House a. Saturday december 18, 1s97. Entered at the pos Tollice at Accomac c. H., ya., As second class matter. The committee appointed to investigate the charges that certain members of the history committee of the grand Camp Confederate veterans of Virginia were in the employ of the american Book company have discharged that duty and their report in part is As follows it is tin unanimous opinion of the undersigned utter full and careful investigation of All the evidence taken that the conduct associations and relations of grand comm uder James it. Stubbs while a member of the history committee with the agent of one of the great publishing houses of the country As developed by the evidence and especially by his own evidence have been such As to Render it improper and inexpedient that he should remain a member of the history committee of the grand Camp of Virginia and that his furl Mercou Section with said committee would be incompatible with the Mutert its of said grand Camp and of the can federate veterans of Virginia Aud of the South. Therefore the undersigned recommend to the grand Camp that grand commander James if. Stubbs be removed from said committee As soon As practicable and that he be requested to resign the position of grand commander of the grand Curp of Confederate vet eras department of the committee say further in their report that a evidence was adduced tending directly or indirectly to reflect on the conductor character of any other member of the history committee. The whole investigation in fact seems to have been aimed at grand commander Stubbs and the committee in their Zeal to cuu vict some one of having been in the employment of the american Book company seem a to have counted for nothing Quot neither the statement of col. Stubbs nor his Good reputation nor his valuable services in peace and War for the last to years to the state. The fact that he at one time received from j. W. Womack an employee of the Americus Book company two checks payable to his order seems to have satisfied the committee As to his guilt but which they acknowledged however was not proven and to make them willing to pronounce upon him the severe punishment which they did. That col. Stubbs bus his faults no one of his Best friends will deny no one of course apologizes or excuses the manner in which he obtained the checks but did the committee convened to try him for bribe taking in the absence of sufficient evidence to that effect Deal justly with him the advisory Council of the grand Camp to which he has appealed the Case will say Aud Charity for an old Comrade at least ought to make them Deal More leniently with him than the committee did.
